I don't know you or about your history with CJ. But, it seems to me you're being ganged up on a little bit and I hate to see anyone up against such odds. Being a 4ft.9in. senior in high school, any one guy in my school seemed like a gang. For a couple of decades, hustling the road (successfully, I might add), I used cunning and cowardness (and, an occasional weapon) to deal with it. And, I got out thumbs intact.

P.S CJ may rub some people wrong because he's a bit of an egomaniac but it's deserved. he's so mega-talented in so many fields. Plus, he's a pretty nice fellow. I'm delighted he's leading us. GO USA.

thats correct, he has been there 100000% of the time either practice room or @ the box, As have I, usually the opposite of him, I watch the cues etc in the practice room and help out(towel boy work) if needed.

In addition to the TV time he is with someone from the team just about every moment of the day doing something, its a full time gig. Some times its been social and thats important too. but he aint been 100 yards from the venue or hotel(next to each other) all week, we all eat across the street & in the rooom at night. I'm crashing on the couch(well cott kelly has the couch) in the living room/dining hall/ living room part of the room we all share. after the sessions, great room(more like a condo than a hotel room),full kitchen. Props to Match Room for EVERYTHING. Wow they do it right.

its lots of work, believe me, this aint my first rodeo doing this. its a long 4 day's for everyone. There is a pile at stake here, everyone feels the pressure, the girls too, they have to take care of the food cause were done late at night, its lots more than anyone gets unless your here. It took 4 days to set up before a ball was on the TV box, I got pic's of them setting up all the stuff(seats, lighting, TV equip, table, and 1000 more things) its a huge production for pool. york hall isnt wired ahead of time, so there are 4-5 huge trucks behind the building, it took a crew of 12 -15 guys just to set up the place over the 4-5 days. And that dont count the table fitters-who did a brilliant job!

Let's face it: pool is, by-and-large, a very individualistic sport. About the only time I can think of a "captain" having an impact on the outcome of a match is during bar table leagues when an astute leader can arrange the players and match ups, coach shot selection and strategy, and point out the occasional rules violation.

But at high powered professional pool? Fergitaboutit.

I also seriously doubt that at the MC the captains are coming out of the back office and unilaterally giving the refeee the day's line up. Much more likely is that the line up is being gamed by the team as a whole, with strong input from the experienced players, like JA and SVB.

BTW, during the little bit of the MC I watched yesterday, the captains were up in the stands... with the spectators.

The captain's role is largely psychological. Just like any coach, the captain helps get his or her players "up" before the match, and keeps them up when things aren't going so well. As a successful captain/coach myself, I know sometimes all it takes is a pat on the back or just a smile at the right moment.

Regarding CJ, I have no problems with him. But it looks to me (and has for years) as if Johnny is the real coach, constantly re-assuring his teammates, and helping with shot selection (even the pros have difficult choices). Even Johnny's wife would come down and help fire up the players. Great to watch.

I know, I'm rooming with him, JA, Hatch. So I KNOW and yes he is doing one hell of a job!!! I wont go into details, as its not my business to discuss. Things are good, we were up until 3:35am "working it out" this morning, now team meeting same place same time everyday. What happens there is his decision to talk about or not. But everyone can be sure (not just my opinion) but as it appears the team is happy with CJ, and IMO thats what counts.

I am very glad to hear from someone that is over there with the Mosconi Team USA. And a member of the world famous Lock Society. Now I am finding out first hand what is going on over there across the big water.

Not sure about this. I haven't been in person but I've heard the Open is a fun event. As far as the broadcast goes, if Matchroom put it on it still wouldn't be on TV live in the US. And it seems like sometimes we have a hard time tracking down the internet stream here for Matchroom events. I can't remember but did we ever find the stream from Vegas last year? Maybe it was the World Cup we couldn't find.

And I've always liked the Accustats stream of the Open even though it is PPV. They do a great job. Camera work and commentary is good, it's in HD, and I like the 2 session daily pricing they've offered. And there is never a problem finding it.

The crowd participation and excitement factor of the Mosconi Cup is unique to the event and I don't think it would necessarily translate to the US Open or most other events for that matter. In addition to the national team aspect, keep in mind the Mosconi Cup is a one table event. The crowd noise doesn't interfere with other matches.

There's factors here that make the pressure almost unbearable. It's not about just playing great pool, it's about facing the most challenging moments in your pool career. I can only share my experience, strength and suggestions, however, even Johnny Archer with 16 years says it's the most pressure he's ever faced. I ran out the last rack to win the CUP 16 years ago and my only thought was extending my cue through the ball. To this day I remember that game and what it took to make a "routine" run out. Let me tell everyone, there is nothing "routine" about playing pool under these conditions. With that being said I love this situation and what it stands for because win or lose you learn valuable lessons about your Game, yourself and other people. This is great for me personally because I thrive on pressure and feel an eery sense of calm in the "eye" of this "tornado".

Tonight we have nothing to lose and everything to win. I have overcome many seemly impossible positions and so has everyone on the team. We will play the rest of the tournament one ball at a time and accept the outcome as professionals and Men.

Anyone thinks they can do better under these
circumstances is "whistling in a cemetery" and has never played at this level. You can say or think what you want, and I will assure you ANYTHING can happen tonight. If you wonder if I "believe" in miracles, I have learned from experience to EXPECT THEM!

We all just need to win ONE match to be victorious and whatever happens I'm honored to be a part of this team and this chapter in pool history. It's not whether you win or lose at this point, it's literally HOW YOU PLAY THE GAME. 'The Game is the Teacher' .

Thanks for your support and respect for this team's efforts. They are required to confront the most extreme conditions and unless you truly know what it's feels like to be out there in front of this type crowd you can't imagine what it takes to win.

No matter what the outcome, these players are all winners and I will personally defend any shot, or decision they make tonight. They have a chance tonight to overcome all odds and go down in history with one of the gutsiest comebacks of all time. I will expect it. :wink:

This is priceless, and I agree in full. The pressure is at a level that these players are not accustomed to at all.

Short race, big enthusiastic crowd, shot clock, accountability to one's team and one's nation, $7,500 difference per player between winning and losing the cup ---- the pressure is something that is truly hard to fathom for most of us.

What we have here is ten great players giving a great effort, some succeeding and others not, but it's a truly great show.

This really is a treat for any serious fan of pool.

CJ did a fine job and I'm proud of him and the Team America. Our guys fought hard against a very tough Team Europe and nearly pulled off the great comeback they needed on Thursday. CJ's frontloaded lineup on day four gave us a chance, but Melling wrestled back the momentum with truly exceptional play.

CJ and his team did America proud and I commend all of them. This was a great event and all who participated provided great theater for me and all the fans who love pool.
