Is it more important to be remembered for being a great player.. or is it more important that everyone can say "yeh that guy was cool I enjoyed being around him"

We're currently experiencing this in my opinion with Earl Strickland. His antics have just come to be to much at many times during his matches. For the great player he is.. you ask the large majority and they will say he's an A$$hole.

Kinda hate to say it, but it's true. So tell me, is it more important to have those trophies in the case to you, or is it more important to know there's going to be people at your funeral?

I decided I wanted to make a topic about this when I heard my dad say that being on a team is about winning and I said that it was more important to enjoy yourself and make others enjoy it.
 
Two words: Efren Reyes. You can be both a gentlemen and a champion. My guess is when all is said and done Earl will always be known for antics instead of his championships. That, is unfortunate but is of his own doing.
 
To answer the question in the OP: In terms of ones legacy, overall its better to have the trophies in the case. Of course stories of your antics can be passed along, but eventually all you'll be remembered for is what you accomplished on paper.
 
I agree with your dad in many ways. I want to win. I want to be competitive. I want to do these things without being an Ahole. I remember the Aholes I've played in the past, but for not the right reasons (I don't remember them for winning or losing, just being no class idiots).
I am not singling anyone out (certainly not Earl as I have seen him be really nice to people). In the end I have to live with the guy that is looking back at me in the mirror. If I can't look at him in the mirror and be ok, then something needs to change.
 
You take the good with the bad with Earl, as you do with a lot of pool players. What the man has done in the game has been incredible. He is a true champion!! When people look back on the antics they will laugh about it, and say that was Earl :)

And if nothing else we have Joe Rogan to keep us entertained!! lol!

And paksat, you will be remembered for your avatar!! :)
 
There is only one reason I won the HOF award with Earl on the ballot...and it wasn't because of what I brought to the table.
Earl and I both know off the table matters. Earl's acceptance speech the following year was excellent and very humble. He is one of the greatest players of all time and will be remembered for both.

Sure Earl have had his *moments* where he was reflecting (Like McEnroe or Connors, too)- Did the world hate McEnroe or Connors for it?- Definitley not! I would never say that Earl is an Asshole- ok, i ve just met him 2 short moments here in germany. But he was always extremly nice.
The *being in tournament-person* and the *outside-tournament-person* are different :-).

But also i would like to *be* like Efren, Mr *24-hour-smile* , lol^^
 
Earl Strickland is an excellent player. Fun to watch and always exciting.

I hate when players (such as Daryl Peach) deliberately try to gain an edge by deliberately winding him up because they know that they aren't as talented. Daryl Peach is an ****ole.

Earl Strickland is the best 9-ball player in history (at least on paper) and people treat him like crap.

I would love to have a friendly game with Earl Strickland. I wouldn't stand a chance but I could feel totally comfortable because he is always fair and always congratulates good shots. Okay, he moans when the other player has luck but you can see him feel bad when he has luck too... he's only holding players to his standard.

Earl Strickland will be remembered for a few centuries by pool enthusiasts.

I can see how Earl would be the perfect example of how a Poolplayer shouldn't act sometimes but, give the man a ton of credit....He is ALWAYS himself and never puts on an act to impress people and you have to respect a person who is that true to himself...no matter how eccentric he is.....Earl is one of the greatest players to ever play the game and has my respect on and off the table.

play great pool and treat your opp with respect.
 
Calling Earl an a$$hole is a bit much. He may not have the best demeanor at the table but away from it he is a genuinely nice guy. When we ran into him at the All-Stars back in 99 or so I asked to get a picture with him. He could have easily just stood for the picture and walked away, like every other big name there did, but no, he actually stood there and talked to us for a little while. He was polite and really easy to talk to. Calling someone like that an a$$hole isn't right.

I think true character is taking a loss as well as you do a win.

EDIT: btw, let's keep this on topic and away from earl. I didn't make this to turn into an earl p*ss fest as i've never met him personally to make a judgement on him.

I am a major Earl fan.but sometimes I wonder what he is thinking,You cannot demand respect when you dont give respect,he has anger issues or could it b killer instinct,I think you can b sociable and play to win,I am well liked where I play but I dont usually give an inch on the table,I dont see how one has bearing on the other,So my answer is try to do both and sometimes you are going to come up short on both ends

Great players will always be remembered. It's the ones that bring courtesy, respect and honor to the game that are revered.

Earl Strickland vs. Phil Helmuth, cage match, who wins? That wouldn't be very ladylike...
I would rather have the coolest guy than the biggest A-hole on my team anytime, even if he was the best.

The funny thing about your funeral is that you're the only one who's not there.
I would like to think I'm a nice guy and that almost everyone likes me. That's in case I get to the other side and see a bunch of guys standing around a pool table and they invite me into a ring game. It would sure hurt my feelings if they didn't. :smile:

Well this isn't about earl. He just so happens to be the perfect example for it. Ironic enough for you?

Kinda hate to say it meaning = it's true that the large majority are not going to speak of sunshine and rainbows when giving their personal opinion of him ( think mosconi cup ).
