I don't know how closely you guys watch the For Sale forum, but I have to point out something that I find really funny...

If you watch, certain members will talk up certain cue makers...
The Hit, The Quality, etc etc... Other members join in...

Then a few weeks later, I see several cues by the the afformentioned cue maker for sale at higher prices than normal...

I understand marketing and realize it is very important...

But there is so much talk about integrity and policing ourselves etc, on this forum...

Has anybody else noticed these type things?

What are your thoughts

I believe the term is "hype" and they are going to come screaming at you for just mentioning it. Believe me.

Perception

Yes I have seen what you mentioned. Most of life is perception!

I cant say I dont like to push cuemakers that are making a quality cue at a great price,I am not big on repping cuemakers who sell cues that are expensive, they dont need it.I think its nice for guys on here selling there stuff that is underpriced and do a good trade to get some exposure and backing from guys who own and play with their cues or appreciate their craftsmanship.I think if you didnt get feedback or "hype" you might overlook the cuemaker and say "who is he?",their are so many cuemakers its nice to hear about them but I do see your point when its hyped for profit gain by the hypers, lol,I do it because i love their work not because im selling their stuff. :)

My thoughts? Szamboti is going to show up here & bad rep you!:D
I see nothing wrong with it. Happens with cars, guns, about everything sold. Take a look over at Glocktalk sometime. When the XD .45acp came out, there was so much hype that dealers had waiting list...and sold the pistols well over retail. In the end, its up to the individual to make a well researched choice to purchase or not.;) Remember...these are the very cuemakers who one day you may well need their services.

My post is about the people that do the hyping simply to benefit themselves for a profit, not the cuemakers...

If I need to explain what I wrote above , I will be happy too...

This is not about any cue maker... It is about the people who talk up cue makers only because they want to sell that cue makers product...

Just an example... If I had a "XYZ custom cue" And I was telling everyone how great they played, etc etc... and my buddies chimed in agreeing with me... To drive up the value...
My only reasons are to make more $$$$ on the cue/s not because I want to share how great they are...

Meanwhile hurting any member of AZB that actually buy the cue...

I don't see any real harm is building up a cue builder, even if you are getting a few to sell. Most small shops don't advertise, and if one of their fans isn't building them up, nobody will know who they are, or anything about the cue builders work. Cue sales on AZB are typically below "market value", so they can hype a cue all day long and it still won't sell unless it is a great cue, for a great price. Most of the players in pool rooms or leagues don't know who these guys are, and when someone is getting online to look for a cue, they find out about Predator, or McDermott, when they could go to a small shop and get a better cue for the same price. There is something to be said for supporting your local cue builder.

I am not talking about small unknown cue makers...

It is about the integrity of the B/S/T...

When people see certain cuemakers get good reviews, or see a couple of posts from people asking/wanting one, you will see in the next few days people posting with those same cues for sale.

I really don't see the SAME people do the "hyping" and selling though.

I think it is more when people see a name mentioned and they have one, they will take the opportunity to list/sell one they have.

Cue prices are really down right now. If I had a cue I was trying to sell from "maker A" and I see a post or two where people are saying good things about him, of course I will try to sell it, and yes, even make a buck or two.

Want to sell, yes. But!

I have seen the compliments as such. The other side of that is that the cue might play great and be beautiful and be a good price. The person hyping it might be sincere. But then again??

I agree with you....

I realize that this is the case most of the time... There are alot of great people on AZB... This isn't about them...

The tactic

I understand. The tactic of hyping is used quite often on here. Your right it could be orchestrated and sometimes I think it is. When the cue plays great and it is way underpriced it makes you wonder why the AZBr saying those things isn't buying the cue. Sometimes it appears illogical(sp)!

at the local carnivals, they call these people "shills". they are mostly there to make the "mark" think the deal is a sure thing. (or in the case of some cues, "the best, smoothest stroke, etc."
:(

I think that the regulars on here know which cues have the hit, the finish and the resale value so it's normal to try and let the sometimers know what to try when given the chance. And it looks like maybe two great cuemakers might get to play each other in Reno this week, Paul Mottey and Tim Paggett. I know I'd like to watch them play and hit a few balls with there playing cues.--Leonard

N,

If you keep your eyes open it won't take long to figure out the various team rosters and who the free agents are.;)
