Sometimes I really hate 8 Ball

With all the stupid House Rules.

Playing in an 8 ball event today I play with a guy for an hour before the tournament to figure out the rules. I play deliberate combos after the break when the table is open and it's all no problem.

Get in the tournament and suddenly combos after the break are not allowed. They say this is the international rules. I look it up and of course it's not the WPA rules.

Sometimes I enjoy all the funky rules but not when everyone in the same event doesn't even know or play by the "same" rules.

At this point in human evolution we should have figured out one standard set of rules for eight ball that is the same in every corner of the world.

I couldn't have said this any better.

I like the game on paper, but not in the real world. There are NO RULES in 8 ball. I normally practice "banks". Some guy want's to play and almost always says 8 ball. I say 10 Ball or One Pocket. "I don't know what that is, all I know is 8-ball'. "Nough said. That's why I don't want to play pool with you.

It's the Scarlett Letter of Pool.

you should try the rules in central america! makes you want to just shake your head and walk away....no combos, if you make your ball and his goes in accidently, you lose your turn, just to name a couple.....who thinks of this s***?

8 Ball

Where I play there are a lot of APA 8 Ball players. I hate playing with them because of the rules of APA 8 Ball. If your shooting a ball, That ball can roll around the table five times, Tough every other ball on the table hit ten banks and if it goes in it's a good shot. Thats not pool thats playing marbles, And the person thinks they made a great shot LOL

It will probably happen about ten seconds before global thermonuclear war breaks out.

JB says that "Sometimes I really hate 8 ball" when in fact I think he meant to say "I always hate the different 8 ball rules."

The game of 8-ball is really a fun, strategic game that is universally known by players.

The rules for 8-ball, in all their diversities and with their many quirks, are what's holding this game back, at least from an enjoyment standpoint.

Technically there is only one set of world standardized rules. The fact that so many people choose not to follow them can't really be held against the game of 8 ball itself.

John the rules are actually a lot better now. Back in the days when I just came to China (eons ago) there wasn't any ball in hand rule at all. Any foul results in "2 free shots". Meaning you don't touch the ball but you proceed from wherever the CB is and shoot twice unless you pot the first time around then you only get one.
Then there's the calling of pocket for the final 8 ball but you can only call 3 times, if the miss the 3rd attempt that you called pocket for then you lose. And as for every other balls you don't need to call pockets at all...

Actually, 8 ball rules in American pool are the bastion of sanity compared to 8 ball rules in English 8 ball, where every single player plays a slight variant and every single player swears blind theirs are THE rules.

Yeah, I learned that when playing a co-worker from England. I asked if I could shoot my ball (solid/low ball) into his ball (stripe/high ball) to pocket his ball and open up the pocket. He swore it was an automatic foul when intentionally shooting my ball into his ball. That and his northeast accent is at times incomprehensible :)

It may just be me, but I don't see why this sort of thing bothers people. Over time, luck evens out and superior play prevails. That's pool. Flukes will happen but at the end of the day/week/year, it's the quality of your play that will be decisive.

I couldnt agree more......its a great game that needs standard rules.

Our bar has the rules on paper, at each table during the house tournies, because of all the non APA or BCA or anything resembling a league. People still act stupid, I think its clear they cant read or listen. There's no fixing that

I don't care what the rules are, so long as they apply to everyone :D

World Standardized Rules

Yes!
I think most players don't even know that there is such a thing as the World Standardized Rules, because the pool world is flooded with advertising by the APA claiming itself as "The" official governing body of pocket billiards, and thousands of new players are led like sheep into the APA world of slop and arbitrary handicaps.

Sadly, when players get tired of the APA, many of them just give up the game, not even knowing there are options to the APA.

I know I'm challenging the Great Law of the Dollar by criticizing the APA, but I'm more interested in the integrity and the future of the game than in profit for a monopolistic company.

I know a game where there are no rules, at least none written down. I'll be glad to show it to you sometime. Bring lots of money.
