SOTU: CSI Changing Guard - Mosconi's Elephant in the Room

Why is it always the American pros are scrutinized in the pool world?

:(

I'm not sure it is always bashing. Not from the real pool aficionados anyway...

I tend to think of it like this. Pocket Billiards carries American origin and rules, which therefore carries international interest and marketing factors.

E.G's - what would the below sports look like today if...
Kung Fu - without Bruce Lee = ?
Tennis - without Wimbledon = ?
Basketball - without NBA = ?

There is an international responsibility to a sport by those who invented / created the rules and brought it to the worlds attention. Frustration builds up when some natives of this great game choose not to recognise this!

A fire needs mending in order to keep burning. If the flame of pool is fading, who has the responsibility to mend it?

This is my view anyway.

But I agree with you that there is sometimes TOO MUCH negativity around forums at times AND NOT ENOUGH POSITIVITY.

PS, The audio player doesn't even work on the first screen that comes up, I had to follow the directions below it that said if the player doesn't appear then go to the audio
archive, and that player worked for the Dec.19 show. Good luck with your show!

I'm sorry to hear about your troubles with the audio player. We've tested it on iPhones, ipads, android phones, standard PCs , and PCs with older browsers and have yet to find a device that won't play it, so I'm a bit surprised that it didn't work for you.

What were you using ?

I used Firefox and a Apple MacBook laptop! It would not work on the archived player or on the main screen!

Safari works real well, you can also listen via iTunes, and on the GoPlayPool app.
Please let me know if you can't find a suitable solution.

I am using a 3 month old Mac Book Pro and Firefox, I see that I'm not the only one having a problem.

Could you expound a little on that Tele-tax and why it benefits MS please Stu. I never heard of it. Thanks

In the UK, much of the TV programming is government funded, with the well known and ad-free BBC being entirely government funded. That funding comes from a tax levied on every home having a TV, and presently, the tax is about $200 per family.

Other networks, I'm told, but cannot confirm, get far less funding but still enjoy the benefit of obtaining government moneys to help them with their programming costs. Hence, Sky Sports would be a beneficiary, as would those, like Matchroom, who produce programs for Sky Sports.

Hopefully, one of our UK-based posters will chime in with greater clarification. I'm really not sure how all of this works.

Crown City Corey -
Heard you on the POV stream....
What's been said on the show that's hard to listen to?
Is there something you'd like to share?
(Because I'm sure whoever said it would love to hear why)

I'm afraid this is incorrect, MS programs are NOT aired on the BBC (which is funded by the taxpayer via a TV licence fee) and as such is a purely commercial company as are any of the other companies that create content for various TV and satellite stations. As such their products (mosconi, WPM etc) have to stand on its own commercial footing and be of a quality level that generates the audience figures that make the companies like SKY wish to continue to purchase them.

Everyone:
In looking into the issue, it appears (from Mozzila support) that Firefox has some known issues with both Flash audio and HTML5 audio.

This may help: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/966369

If you're not a tech guru, the easiest route may be to simply use a different browser.

Thank You for your interest in our show

As someone who deals with multiple audio and video formats every day, it is amazing to me how many there are. Some audio files don't work in certain browsers, et cetera. I have about a dozen or more conversion software programs to convert audio formats to another format that is compatible for me to use.

Here's a test to see how well your browser wordks with HTML5: http://html5test.com/

And that Flash and their never-ending updates is so annoying to me, but it is what it is, I guess.

Easiest remedy is to play in a different browser. ;)

I've heard Mark say that about the tax subsidy thing before and always thought it sounded a bit off. My guess he heard it from someone and just ran with it without checking the details. Never a good idea but it does happen.

Your first paragraph is broadly correct, although the BBC does sell their programmes worldwide, so generates income for itself without relying entirely on the license fee. There is no question snooker would not get the coverage it does without BBC support, but showing it is a commercial decision based on viewing figures, much like anything else it. How long the license fee business model will continue for is anyone's guess - not long, I suspect. Then it will be trash tv 24/7, and an even stupider, lazier and fatter nation, if that's possible.

I'm not sure what you are getting at with your second para - sky are funded directly through subscriptions, and don't get any tax dollars. The BBC is a mandatory tax of around $200 a year, whereas with Sky you're looking at about $80-150 a month, depending on which package you choose. The UK govt does part-fund channel 4, but the contributions are small, and they're a commercial channel. AFAIK the BBC and C4 are the only government funded channels in the UK.

A tax that helps the game we love. Cave dwellers in NPR will be conflicted - or they would be if they ever played...

American ex-pro's other halves get to to interact with forum trolls, for one thing. :)

But some American ex-pros come out with a book: Boogie in the Dark.

You will never read another one like it. I can promise you that. :grin-square:

lol.

Pros are representatives of the game, and the barometer of its health. They are role models, whether they like it or not. If THEY do not act responsibly, why should WE act responsibly?

At the moment, American pros are fair game.

Thank you. As I noted, my post was based on hearsay and inference and not knowledge, and I had hoped a UK-based poster would set the record straight.

Sounds like Mark's contention that the business model for UK-based pool is helped by the Tele-tax was in error.

Thanks for your input.

And so are forum trolls fishing on threads to annoy others.
