Spiritual Side of Jeanette Lee

Jeanette Lee, arguably the world's most recognizable pool player, often refers to herself by her nickname, the Black Widow.

"It's not the human side of me people are interested in," she said. "What they really want is the Black Widow, a superwoman coming in and destroying everyone in a cool way. I love being her, but I don't consider it to be all of me."

Lee, 37, gets a rare opportunity this weekend to show her multiple sides. Instead of traveling the globe to demonstrate the talent that has made her one of the sport's top players, she will be home for a fundraiser to benefit her church and community.

A Korean-American born in Brooklyn, N.Y., Lee will display her considerable skills in an exhibition tonight at Grace Church, located on State Road 67 in Mooresville, an event that also benefits the Morgan County Boys & Girls Club.

Lee, who has lived in Mooresville for six years, is excited about working the Black Widow's pool magic on the same stage where her minister, Jim Taylor, leads worship on Sundays. It is Lee's desire that people interested in the sport might find a spiritual connection.

"I'm just another sinner, just another Christian," she said. "What we're doing here is taking this fantastic identity that I have and helping promote what we do at Grace Church."

Taylor admits church leadership "had to warm to (Lee's) idea" of using pool in this form.

"I'm sure my parents' generation would have thought differently of it," he said. "It's a unique situation, but it's not uncommon for a carpenter to work with the church, for business people to use their business skills here or for teachers to help in classes. Giving of those talents is acceptable and common."

Lee keeps a frenetic travel schedule -- she plays competitively, gives exhibitions and is working to open a string of billiard centers -- but she clearly is invested at home.

Her husband, billiards ace George "The Flamethrower" Breedlove, owns and operates Midwest Outdoor Products in Camby. Their son, John, is a junior at Mooresville High School.

Lee's other passion is education. Her 4-year-old daughter, Cheyenne, is her latest pupil.

Before billiards became a money-making endeavor, Lee was on a path to becoming a teacher. She spent two years in college studying early childhood development and elementary education.

"When I'm home I leave notes on the fridge so that everyone around Cheyenne knows what we're doing (with her studies)," she said. "This week we're continuing to count by fives."

Lee's list of educational objectives for Cheyenne this week include: Using vocabulary words in sentences, reading more, honing hand-eye skills by cutting out pictures of dolls and hopping on one foot to improve dexterity.

Being a mother, a wife, a teacher, a competitor, a performer, an entrepreneur and "an ambitious workaholic" requires endless energy. For Lee, it also has meant struggling with physical ailments, including scoliosis, a painful curvature of the spine she developed at age 13.

Her busy schedule this week began with a national billiards event in Hollywood, Fla. She returned home briefly, traveled to Nashville for business meetings and Alabama for a sponsor appearance.

Even today is hectic, beginning with John's school wrestling meet at Jennings County. Lee and the children leave for Korea on Sunday morning.

It's all part of the game, she said.

"When you bring the Black Widow in to do incredible trick shots and beat everyone's husband, it's a very cool thing," she said. "We have a good time with that. If I can use that interest to bring people into areas that I believe in, all the better."

I was hoping this article would appear in the pool media, but it hadn't as
of the time of this writing. So I decided to initiate a thread about it.

George Breedlove is called "The Flamethrower"? LOL :grin-square:

This is a very nice thing that Jeanette Lee is doing. Bravo to her! :)

Has been for a long time. If you ever see him break it makes sense. Great guy and still capable of playing top level pool on any given day.

George used to joke that he would play anyone in the world if they would work his schedule with him for 30 days before they play. That man would rather work than eat.

That makes sense, then. The only time I had ever seen him play competitively was at DCC or IPT (when it was in existence).

Whenever he does play, he always has the crowd on his side, just like his lovely wife!

Thanks Jenny. I guess maybe my opinions on her differ from most as just yesterday I saw yet another ad featuring her and wished she would get off the black thing.

"What they really want is the Black Widow, a superwoman coming in and destroying everyone in a cool way."

Is she right? Does the public really want the dressed in black thing? Does the hard-ass dominating look really encourage people to buy whatever is being hawked?

It doesn't work for me. I'd MUCH rather see the person, see her dressed in some colors and not have to sell sex to sell herself.

She's a pretty girl and a good person, from what I've heard about her from folks that know her, and I'd like to see more of that. BUT, I suppose it wouldn't sell. Good grief.... what a world of mixed up, unevolved values we live in.

I know what you mean. LOL! :grin-square:

I remember at a Skins tournament, I think it was, they had the pool players, one by one, come out into the TV arena through a billow of smoke. It really reminded me of wrestling, more so than pool. I didn't like it one bit. :o

I have met Jeanette Lee, and I must say that I did end up liking her a lot. :)

At each event, the crowd goes wild for Jeanette. She is comfortable in front of a camera and the audience, and she knows how to play it to her advantage. It gets the audience engaged, and that's what we need more of, rather than the Buckingham Guard, robotic, slowpoke style of play we see from time to time.

Plus, believe it or not for those who don't know it, Jeanette Lee really is a strong player, which lends itself to her credibility. ;)

Hey, I know I may be in the minority, but I would much rather see The Black Widow playing pool, a legitimate professional, than some pumped-up "babe" with fake boobs being pimped out by some pool promoter, when in reality the huge silicon-titted female player is nothing more than a strong 3 in the leagues.

Jeannette is the real deal, and she capitalized on her good looks, as well as her caliber of play. She's probably the best thing going for American pool right now.

When you go out into mainstream America, maybe 5 out of 100 have heard of Jeanette Lee, but nobody has ever heard of Earl Strickland, Buddy Hall, or Mike Sigel, three of the most famous American players ever in recent times.

We used to have Willie and Fats, and this bickering duo made for good TV on Wild World of Sports and ESPN, et cetera. Mainstream America loved it.

Pool needs a celebrity. Jeanette Lee is the only American pool celebrity we have at this juncutre, and I hope she keeps it going. This article really made me like her even more. God bless Jeanette Lee.

Thanks for this thread, JAM. So many of the ladies of the WPBA are truly special, giving people.

Jeanette Lee is, indeed, America's true pool celebrity, and her fans, her fellow professionals and the billiards press all are entitled to their opinions regarding her style, conduct and demeanor in marketing herself and her sport.

But, as you've shared by creating this thread, there is so much more to this woman than what her public persona reveals. I feel very fortunate to have had a lot of quality time with Jeanette in my life, and to have seen up close the woman behind the larger-than-life Black Widow.

Jeanette is, quite simply, one of the most giving people I have ever met. Exceptionally dedicated to her family life, her career and her charity work (most notably her work with the National Scoliosis Foundation), she also has a long history, and a very natural inclination, of supporting others in need. She has a heart bigger than the state of Texas, and I'm pleased to say that I've told her so in person.

Jeanette Lee is a role model in so many ways, and her presence in pro pool is, to stick with the spiritual theme of the initial post, a blessing unto us all.

All talent may it be great or small is GOD given!! It is good to know some people come to terms with that.

Not just right now but back then also.
We had the pleasure of her company for a benefit we did for Make a Wish back around 2001.
Not only did she go well beyond the time we had booked, she also brought George who put on an amazing exhibition of his own.

I've been meaning to do a writeup about her and the event for a long time - mostly to elaborate on her genuinely down to earth perspective. As an example - when I met her at JOB's in Nashville to discuss our event she says "lets go get some ice cream and talk about it". So off we go to Baskin Robbins a few blocks away and talk about this and that for about an hour. Once away from the bright lights you get to see what a real person she is. And 5/100 seems very conservative.

She's done a good of marketing herself, is a top level player and I think most people (pool savvy or not) would recognize her name when mentioned.

Jeanette Lee is a great REP for our sport. She plays well & her Professionalism is always enjoyed. I'm glad to see that she is taking our great sport into a Church, to demonstrate the God Given talent she possesses, to play this great sport well.

Billiards is a fine game, worthy of Kings & Angels to play. We mere mortals are fortunate to enjoy such a fine sport, even though some have severely tarnished the fine image.

Rich folks won't let GOLF be tarnished like this, but believe me there are more snakes on a golf course, than were ever in a Pool Room.

Thanks to Jeannette Lee, for her additioin to the great sport of Billiards.

Jeanette Lee

I have noticed the things she does mostly out of the limelight for many years. The Black Widow is a persona that Jeanette has built up and branded into a major commercial success but the real class is the lady herself.
