I can not believe that this is actually debated. Billiard sports is recognized as an olympic sport, we are just not in the main games yet along with all the other sports carried out in the World Games.

This does not mean that all poolplayers are athletes, but the most serious ones are. They care about their physical health, what they eat, how much sleep they get etc etc.

WCBS is the organisation working to get us in the main games, maybe we should support them instead of having this debate.

Read more about this here: http://www.olympic.org/uk/sports/recognized/index_uk.asp

Fishing actually has alot of must know knowledge and touch feel...hell you should see my pop's he can stand from 30ft and put a bait in a tin can. An thats some serious skill.

He tell you well what if they biting under that low hanging branch and you gotta land it there? Well tell ya what he can....so if fishing is a sport and curling, then so is pool and billiards.

And as for athletic ability...tons of athletic ability in the game. The thinking game is an athletic ability just ask a quarterback or a pticher or catcher. And I tell you what i weigh about 140 stand 5'7" and 90% maybe more even alot of good players and even more big big guys cant touch my break for power.

I'm not trash talking either. From the understanding of other sports and development of power through movement I can smash if thats what the table needs. And Its accurate. Just look at Johnny Archer, its amazing all the momentum and control he shows. Guaranteed LeBron can't break harder and in control like Johnny and I doubt he could beat me either.

An don't even get me into endurance....i was once upon a time a hell of a miler and owned the 5k and ran the half marathon in 1:15.00+ and won the thing...I can aliken the running of that to a couple days up gambling for high stakes. But when I did it for four days and took down the cash living on coffee cigarettes and beer...jesus christ i've never ran the marathon but i don't think my body would feel that bad. So theres endurance in bounds just depends on if your a ball banger or a weekend warrior or just a Warrior, lol.

Just even giving the thought that this sport is only a game is a shame. Its a sport and also very SPORTING just as Trap shooting, fishing, Hunting, Running, Golf, Baseball....all gentlmans things.

Pokers a game and of course you don't do nothing but deal cards and use your mind. Steven Hawking can not play sports but I bet you he could take the world series of poker on a run for its money, why cuz its a game he can do those.

If pool is not a sport to you then make it challenging enough to make it one for yourself, get up out your chair and go learn to punish the break, go learn to pull an twist banks like a mad man and do all that till your back screams and your eyes burn and you can't stand it no more. And don't quit till your inner child stops its moanin' and does what its told. Pool's not a sport to you because you gave it that lack of importance when "YOU" titled it....its all in your head dudes, girls, kids.

And hey I'm from the sportsmans paradise shouldn't I get a little extra weight for my opinion lol.

Best Wishes,
G.G.

The main ingredient to many physically demanding sports is the hand eye coordination. To pitch, throw a football, free throw, or hit a tennis ball, all requires much of the same skillset required to pocket balls. It may not be the only thing involved, but it is a big factor. Pool just doesn't have the same level of physical contact and physical effort and endurance that those sports do. Whereas backgammon, poker, chess etc...don't fall into that category. Pool may be a grey area, but it leans closer to the sport side than game. And making a living off something doesn't constitute whether its a sport or not.

Christian

You dont need hand eye for swimming

Ernest Hemmingway said the only sports are mountain climbing, bull fighting and automobile racing.

That said I believe pool is definately a sport.

Just because webster says dont make it so.....

just because there is a defanition for the word sport in the dictionary doesnt make it real.....

There is no such thing as a "sport" they are all games that are played for the "sport of it".

its lets go play a game of (whatever), not, lets go play a sport. it comes down to grammer not opinion.....

Hasnt ths been beat to death on here befor....

Bottom line pool is one of the most mentaly taxing GAMES there is, and that will wear down your physical like nothing else. In other GAMES they say he looks tired, in pool we say he looks broken down that says it all for me.

pool is a sport

Anyone who doesn't think pool is a sport, try playing for 12 to 14 hours. I Used to do it more but i still end up playing over 10 hours 3 or 4 days a week. When I had a table I would hit the pool hall at about 7 and when the bar closed at 2 go home and play till the sun came up. Every time my legs fell well if you ever ran track thats how it feels.

If you can drink a beer while playing, it's a game.

there goes softball LOL

if you have a beer with your buddies and play flag football on weekends...

doesn't have any effect on the legitimacy of football as a sport

the Superbowl remains a big deal

the world series remains a big deal...

just because the amateurs drink while doing it doesn't seem to reduce the legitimacy of other sports...

Sport

I can lose to a physical wreck at poker or scrabble.
I won't lose to the same at billiards.A guy can think like
Einstein but if he can't stop his rock,he's going off!

neither sport nor game

billiards is... and always will be... an "addiction"

that being said... GIMME MY FIX DAMMIT! :D

Hard call for me, but in the end I said game. The only athletic traits required are good eye/hand coordination and good eyesight. That said I do believe on average a true athlete will fare better than a non-athletic person.

Well said from your point of view better yet, maybe you should tell Mika to stop working out because its a waste of time. If HE hadn't done all his road work and preparation, he would of had NO chance of winning the US Open from the losers bracket, ZERO.

Let's not forget that we play a "game" of baseball! I think it is clear that baseball is a sport.

So true we can play...we can "play" baseball, basketball , tennis , hockey, ,golf , pool. But , nobody plays boxing...and yet they are all sports.

I am still up in the air about this, that is why i posted the poll.
As far as Mika I think he has just gotten older and wiser and more experienced.
Working out is okay but I don't know if it helps.Look what some of the greats did and they did not work out.
