Steinway Billiards/Cafe

So, I got a chance to go to Steinway billiards yesterday and the night before.

Awesome pool room. The ten footer is not a difficult table to play on at all; however, table 3 is tougher to play on than table one at hardtimes.

They're both about the same tightness, but the shelf angle incident to the pocket is wider at Steinway which makes rattles more common.

I got to meet several people and play with a couple. The people were friendly and open to a game. The owner seems like good people and gave me the discount for all of my time even though I went for about 30 minutes past the cutoff.

Of course as usual I played for about 7 hours though.

The previous night I had some of the pizza that they make there and it was really good. They also got me drinking this stuff called Orangina which is REALLY good.

While it would've been nice to have played in the tourney this weekend in Olathe, I am glad I got to go to Steinway and play there. Next time I'm in New York, I will definitely go back there.

Thanks for the trip report. I have never been there, but from the photos I have seen and trip reports like yours, it sounds like a pool room I would really enjoy. :)

I visited Steinway this past August. It was a Wednesday night the week of the 14.1 tournament. They had their regular 9 ball tournament that night and Earl, Archer, Shaw, Bustamante, Can, and Kiamco played in it! Nice turn out!

My wife and I are going back to NYC in April on vacation. I am considering playing in that Wednesday tournament or maybe having a lesson with Earl. I agree that it is a great place. It was a thriving place with energy. It isn't in the greatest part of NYC, but that probably means they have cheaper rent.

Damn! Lookit ya- gittin all fancy in the big city with orangina an stuff.

I like the San pelligrino orange stuff way better;)

It really is a great pool room. Good action, good food, good weekly tournaments. It's a good room.

I think hunter and jennifer...

was jennifer or hunter there?
did you get to play them??

I think hunter and Jennifer hang out at amsterdam. I didn't go there this trip. I hate parking in downtown.

Also on vacation "with her in doors" I am thinking on paying a visit early April

How much does Earl charge for a lesson?

Would like to enter their handicap tournament but how do they handicap strangers?

Actually you are wrong as Astoria is one of the more desired areas in Queens due to its convenience to Manhattan. Honestly no such thing exists as cheaper rent in NYC.

That's a shame I do like a bit of saw dust under my shoes as I shuffle around the table.

As part of my traveling for my real job, I get to visit many pool rooms around the USA. I've been to about 40 now in the last 4.5 years I've been playing pool and I think Steinway is just about as good as it gets. Great room, lots of great players, owner named Manny (sp?) was really cool to me on my two trips here and having Earl there daily adds to the vibe for sure. Anyone who feels pool is dead or dying wouldn't feel that way in Steinway. It was buzzing when I was there and I wish I could play in hat environment everyday! Two Thumbs up for sure.

Glad that Steinway is my local pool room :D

And last time I checked Earl charges around $70 for an hour or two I believe, but it could've changed.

Love Steinway and it's atmosphere, the music level is just right, not too loud and not too low, the tables and cloth are great, and a lot of pros and A+ players are there on any given night so it's great to watch them when you're not playing, I hardly see any bangers there. And the food has to be about the best food I've ever had at a place of entertainment that isn't a restaurant.

Steinway has tournaments on Sundays, Mondays and Wednesdays. The tournament directors have years of experience, and are used to this. One of the TD runs/works with Tony Robles on the Predator Tour.

I heard $150 for 2 hours with Earl.

Just go, and have fun. Also, don't forget to their desserts. I love their tiramisu!

Steinway is also this year's host for the annual Ginky memorial. Three regional tours cooperate together to run this fabulous 3 day event. Also, I believe Dragon announced they're be back at Steinway for it's this year's 14.1 world.

Yea I took one and he put his arm wieght on me. It wouldn't fit my arm so he taped it on. It was the greatest thing ever.

he gave me some of his cvs fingerslides and even let me hit some balls with his javelin which, btw, feels really good, almost as if your shooting with a cue that is merely a half foot too long instead of 2. :grin-square::eek::grin-square:

On a serious note, the tennis racket wrap is brilliant.

wonder what a couple of hours with Phil Mickelson might set someone back?

and +66 on Steinway, Manny, and staff being terrific.

best,
brian kc

Thanks for that I do fancy it, hope he can fit me in.

Next time you come play the Wednesday night open tournament 7 PM ask for Finnegan.

And by all means, get the gyro in lieu of pizza. Rock solid eats.
