SVB's Mosconi Facebook post

i wish accu-stats would work some mc style events into their make it happen repertoire.

i think it would help with sorting things out all while benefiting the fans, the players, and the promoters.

I’m not going for this....I believe it was with Shane’s approval...
....but I don’t see a North American writing “programme”....
I apologise in advance and I mean no offence, but I want to comment on your pretence because I believe you may be over-analysing this. Sometimes we North Americans think we're at the centre of the world, so we fail to recognise that it is possible that some of us do spell things the "British" way. So in Matchroom's defence, I truly believe that it is possible Shane got off his arse and wrote the post himself, and that there was no English ghostwriter that laboured over it.

Now excuse me while I finish my litre of beer.

bollocks sir!

After reading most of this thread and reflecting back on what i remember from reading previous mosconi threads I gotta say I pity the coach. It seems like he is doing anything and every thing he can think of to help our players be more competitive and here you have our player say ...no thanks I am not interested in participating in your sessions.

I am not saying this coaches agenda will work but everything every other coach has tried has failed. Shanes lack of interest in these boot camps puts the coach ...and match room itself in a serious quandry. Do they put Shane on the team anyway as some of you have opined simply because he is the best we have ? What does that do for the morale of the rest of the team selected if they were to follow the coaches agenda. ?

Like it or not Bergman was not selected last year after he chose not to enter some qualifiers. Perhaps Shane will not be chosen this year due to his choices also.

In my opinion our players have always been lone wolves and this European coach is not going to change that mentality with a 5 week boot camp program.

That same lone wolf mentality also is a detriment in this team format in my opinion. Say what you will but the Europeans give the Americans the orange crush when it comes to team spirit.

They are playing for 'actual' money. $20k for winning and $10k for losing. And some would say that a match that takes four days to finish is indeed a long set.

I’ll play devils advocate.....

The current US Coach is asking SVB (and others) to attend 5 boot camps, all on their own dime. Two of them I’m told are going to be out of the country - Netherlands and Russia? (I can’t remember). So what is the cost of a player attending all 5 bootcamps? $5,000? $7,500 $10,000. And then attending all 5 bootcamps plus the MC is now taking over 10% of their calendar year. So while they are at a bootcamp, they can’t be at another tournament potentially winning more money.

Don’t get me wrong - I think the MC is a great event and exciting. But when was the last time the players were given a raise? It used to be held in front of 300 people a day - now ticket sales are 3000 people a day. It is broadcast and advertised on the ESPN app and 112 countries (or something like that). And I’m not saying that the promoter shouldn’t make a wheel barrel full of money. They came up with the idea, put in 100s of hours, yada yada. I’m just saying the pot looks obviously bigger and if the expectation is for the players to make a bigger financial commitment, then maybe time to increase the get for the players. Or the team will be comprised of trust fund babies and I can only think of one US quasi pro player that fits that criteria.

No, the unfortunate consequences concern possible loss of prestige for this fantastic event should it lead to the absence of America's best player. There's no doubt in my mind that this would lessen American interest in the event, and in the worst-case scenario, hurt the event's long-term viability.

While I can't speak for all Americans.

I'd be more interested if we won.

Maybe we'd have a better chance of that without Shane on the team.

Loss of prestige? Lol.

We get pounded every year, what's the worst that could happen? Seriously?

I would bet that Earl would do better than Shane. He proved it to some degree winning the German tournament while he was touring with Efren. Shane may be a great player by himself but he showed over and over that he is NOT a team player.

While I may agree on a certain level that we might have a better chance of winning without Shane on the team, I still can't get past the point that he's our country's best player by a wide margin.

And call me Madcap (or thickheaded) but I believe that his stick will heat up at MC and he'll play like the true champion he is.

Has it always been this format with the scotch doubles?

Singles and (scotch) doubles matches have been a part of every Mosconi Cup event, 1994-2017.

In 2006, trebles and teams matches (2 teams matches in 2006) were added. The trebles matches were discontinued after 2006, but the teams matches (1 per year) have continued since then. In the teams matches, they cycle through the lineup with a player playing a full game at a time, not alternating shots.

From 2007 forward, a teams match has been first each year, then a mixture of singles and doubles matches.

Lebron James is the best player in the NBA right now, but that doesn't seem to matter, because the Cavs are probably getting swept in the finals.

How many more years of Shane playing below is speed are we going to be okay with? It seems like every year we think he'll come out of his slump, and it's the same thing every year.

I don't know Shane personally, but he strikes me as a very passionate person when it comes to pool. He wants to win so badly that I believe he puts a lot of undue pressure on himself at the Mosconi. Every year that the US loses adds more pressure to Shane the following year.

I'll still be rooting for the US in December whether or not he makes the team.

Good post. I have been watching Shane play in person since 2013 and must say he does struggle somewhat with his own demons. I have met Shane on several occasions and have enjoyed talking with him but I have always steered clear of the M-cup subject. I really thought last year the team might turn the corner....I dont mean I thought Team USA might win but I felt we might be more competitive.

The Sunday night before the games I was standing at the front counter at Mandalay Bay and Shane came riding through the lobby on his Grandfather's motorized wheelchair. This little machine scoots and turns on a dime, Shane was flipping cookies and whipping in and out of people like he was born on it. I took it as a good sign that he was relaxed and carefree and that it would be a better year for us at the event. Although I believe we may have done moderately better the end result was about the same.

Shane cannot carry our team and he knows it but he goes out there and tries, its frustrates him and USA fans.

I don't think the size of the payout is the issue here. If it was our guys would be kicking azz and taking 20 thousand home instead of settling for 10.

No they wouldn’t. You really thing if it were say 10 times more money that the outcome would suddenly change?

Ok possibly if it were for millions and cornbread red rose from the grave to play for merica.....then sure the euros would be jarred lol

I arrived for day one and two, staying at Mandalay Bay. The night before I was deciding whether to check out Griffs or stay at the casino.

I saw Shane and Billy leave a restaurant, said hi, and that sealed it for me. I was sticking around. I met a lot of my heroes that night and made friends with Brian Parks (didn’t know him at first but he made my trip amazing...another story). I was a little surprised to see Shane walking around with a Bud Light and an entourage of clearly close friends and family. I have no idea if it was his first or only, but I was surprised to see a beer in hand at all. I say that acknowledging he is my utmost hero.

I saw Darren there attending for his BCA HOF induction. I was too shy to say hi given his entourage of sycophants (that I’d have been happy to join). Later on Jason Shaw came in with Nick van den Berg both fresh off the practice tables with cues on their backs. I offered Nick a beer and he smiled at me like I was an idiot (can’t blame me for trying). It made me think twice about the beer I saw SVB holding.

Respectfully, Matt
(I don’t take myself too seriously. I hope you can return the favor.)
