TAR and its future...(dosent look good IMO)

I watched all day yesterday for a good 10 hours while I was "working from home" and I had a great time listening to the commentary. The commentary from all the various players is what I've been enjoying the most. That and their interaction with the folks in the chat room has been quite entertaining.

Today I'm working from the office and unfortunately I can't view the live streaming video because my employer just doesn't allow it and filters that out. I'm a computer nerd and have tried everything I know how to get around it, to no avail. Oh well. But I'll definitely be watching after I get home from work!!

I have bought all of the TAR PPV's up to this point and have donated to TAR before. I've also advertised for Justin and Chad to basically anyone that would listen in the poker circles as well as people that might not be familiar with them. They are both class acts and TAR is a great venture that provides a quality product.

When I buy the PPV's I basically get to watch a couple of hours before I have to go to bed so I can get up for work early. There have been a couple that I didn't get to watch hardly any at all. That is perfectly fine by me because I get to see some great pool and interact with everyone I've come to know on here and in the pool world in general.

That being said, I chose not to purchase the WPBA PPV simply because I don't want to watch the women play. I think the women are great and great players and all, but I don't know them on or away from the pool room like some of the guy champions whom I've gotten to know. I wish TAR nothing but the best and as always will help in any manner that I can.

That was some seriously shaky shooting that match. Almost painful to watch. It was like they had no idea where the CB was going. I hope it gets better, but I like TAR and am happy to support.

I haven't read all of this thread, but it would seem to me that pool halls should have some interest in providing the matches to their customers, but that ain't happening.

I can never watch the live feeds. Has to be archived on a website for download, or available on DVD.

This brings up a great point that might even generate interest. Money is in mass media not avid pool fans. Something needs to be done to involve the general public.

Allison Fisher v. Earl Strickland
The most dominant female pool player ever vs. the most dominant male player of long ago.

This could be promoted to a widespread audience. Most people who turn on ESPN to find a pool match generally see women playing and don't see them missing often either, but they usually tune out as there is no intense rivalry. Throw out some trash talking; put out some betting lines; advertise it as a grudge match between long standing champions of different sexes in a sport most people view as one of the most gender-nuetral.

Try to line up sponsorships for sports drinks and products that cater to one sex or the other (i.e. even the marketing pitting men against women could garner more interest).

Players should wear microphones and banter with the audience and one another should be encouraged. Make the stakes include more than money, some type of bonus from a major sponsor. If advertised and promoted on a large enough scale, people could tune in to watch the match and a winner could be announced at the conclusion of the match (if Earl wins a lucky fan who is pre-registered will be selected to win a new car, or Diamond table, etc...)

Just an idea. Something needs to be done or nothing will be done.

Yeah I know thats a big statment, but I just talked to Chad and got the numbers, they cant survive with the numbers the way they are. He didnt say a word to me about the future of TAR-I DONT WANT TO START RUMORS. I am saying that TAR cant exist with out buys period!!!

It aint my business but I just called Chad, I needed some good news-Knowing that they are doing a feed of the WPBA I was sure they would have a good audience, I figured the players, their friends and other who arnt AZ people might bring in some good numbers in addition to their regulars.

I was WRONG, real wrong they have a total of 21 paid feeds, yup 21. I cant even comphrend that low of a number, I thought by accident there would be at least 100 PPV's. I know people are at work, $$ is tight, a million other excuses but even with all the excuses out of the way there are only 21 people watching it???? thats like 2 states for every viewer, there are 300,000,000 people in America and 21 are watching TAR. How can that be???

Lets do some math. 21 X $30=$630. yup $630 that wont pay for Justins air plane trip, shipping the equipment, and all the other hard costs of the production. NOT including his time.

If the numbers dont work, they dont work. I know $$ is tight, pool is dead but 21 PPV's or $630 is going to result in a bad outcome for TAR. the KC Ring Game will be a good trip for them but for TAR to survive and be a real thing they need customers, not leaches on U-stream who just take. It would be a shame to say "Remember TAR?, It was the nuts"

i think it would help if they would loop the video stream for people that've paid. that way if they're at work they can watch it when they get home. i don't get home till 7pm most days (cali time) couple that with the fact that i almost never know what's coming up =sam probably isn't watching

BINGO. Now this is a winner and can't miss if promoted right. Johnnyt

I hate to rain on a lot of parades here but i doubt that 'time shifting' will be of an help in these type of matches. I just doubt that once the results are known that many will pay to watch two B/C players bang them around.

TAR's business plan has to focus on selling the DVDs. If they can get live views to cover 1/2 their expenses, then produce DVDs which they can sell forever at virtually no aditional expense-that's where the profit potential is!

Good luck to TAR. We and especially I need them.

Why DVD? Charge user to download and burn. No production cost then.

Nostroke, the dvd market is dying, just like VHS and cassette did before them. A huge portion of the market is consumers looking to do Video on Demand, be it Pay per minute, download to burn, or PPV streaming (live or recorded). Its convenient, it requires no wait and for the merchant its the nuts. No shipping and they are basically reselling electricity with a high markup. The margin on electronic delivery is so good that it even negates the downside of electronic commerce, which is fraud, transaction processing for non credit card holding consumers and "card not present/ no shipping receipt" transaction costs (AKA high risk transaction processing).

All the dvd vendors online are moving away from dvd sales as tangible goods has the death bell ringing and most sellers can hear it. Much like newspapers and magazines, there will always be people who want to have hard product that they can hold and read on the john, but this will eventually represent the vast minority with the vast majority taking delivery of their content via electronic delivery.

They still have to produce a dvd. Download to burn requires the source material to be in dvd format before its encoded to the download to burn format. Consumers will not be happy with dvds that do not come with menus, chapters and the rest. One large .avi/mpg/mov file wont do it, unless your talking about something like 1080p/720p files, which are stored on a local drive and streamed to your tv via your home network.

Yeah, but...

Maybe in some third-world country. In the developed world it just makes you look like a slob.
