TAR and The DCC

There is one way to never have a problem with the TAR feed. COME TO THE EVENT and visit the TAR PIT in person. All the major woofing and game making was happening in and around the TAR Pit. They had a very nice set-up with four tables and seating for about 40 people. Ain't nothing better than seeing it live! You can even meet Fred and the Beav and get your picture taken with them. They don't bite!

I plan on being there next year. I was actually locked into going this year until my fiancee' informed me that we are going to Italy in a week or two. I think I need to actually inform her that I will be going to the DCC this time ;)

To the TAR guys:
You do a great job. Whodathunkit that I could watch a great money game from my living room. Keep up the good work and while it is easier said than done....don't sweat the stuff you have no control over. Perhaps the bandwidth dipped because Charlie Williams was downloading a terabyte or so of porn.

I thought I had it figured out. I'll just mount my own satellite feed on a van and have 2mb up from everywhere. Then I got the quote. $20,000.00 a month!

Basically it's our government we should all be pissed at. The Feds are the ones keeping a cap on our upload speeds allowing the internet companies to reel it out for the big $$$$$.

We'd have HD streaming without it.

I would pay $50 for someone to just text me updates from the action at an event like the DCC. To be able to peek into it from Texas is mind boggling.

Ray

Pfffff, is that all?

:idea::
With the gubment keeping a cap on ours, perhaps we need to rhetorically ask if they want us to bust a cap on theirs

Whatever happened to the concept that the gubment worked for the people? (Did I just open the non-pool related window?)

Were you watching the same TAR feed I did? None of the commentators dissed Jeanette. Just because commentators don't totally suck up to the mainstream pool establishment does not mean they are necessarily dissing anyone. There was only some petty dissing in the chat (which is normal) along with some very informed and realistic analysis. I think a lot of us who never cared much for Jeanette's marketing side came away respecting her action side. In fact, I think by participating in the TAR pit she's become a role model to up and coming female players everywhere.

And Sunny did great. It's nice to hear a female voice now and then in pool and Sunny filled in the late night hours doing her best to entertain us. She would do things like drag Scooter in the booth and interview him and she even stepped up and gambled on camera with a lay down artist so as to keep us entertained when there was an early morning lull. She went above and beyond the call of duty.

Sorta like the red, white, and blue @ Mosconi.

Bob <Sunny, in case you read this: 어떤 사람은 바보입니다. 그들이 당신에 영향을시키지 마십시오. 우린 널 사랑해!:grin-loving:>

Take some advice from someone who has been married a looooooooong time. Wait until you are in Italy and she is in a very good mood-----> then spring it on her .

Amazing! Thats the only word I can use to describe the service from both Accu-stats and TAR. For the nites of free feed I would stay up to 4 or 5 in the morning watching some great action. The JL/Tedder battle was one of the best Ive seen since the SVB/Pagulayan match. It summarized for me what the word "ACTION" means. And TAR had it. To see some of the human interaction between competitors is what others cannot show. Im talking about Larry Price arguing a call, Strong Arm John showing what he is made of, the desperation of a Scooter who got all his money on a horse that looked totally out of the picture only to rise to the occasion and to fall again, etc. Where else can you see this. These guys who run TAR Justin, Chad, Beav, et al are giving us the best of their ability and it is a hell of a lot. Because it is done with love of the game. This is what we get. Sure nothings perfect but the passion for the game and the gamble is one thing you cant deny.
And as for Accustats. Wow to see Efren come back and win the 9 ball event when everyone was saying Efren was done was again simply amazing. You will not see better 9 ball in the world than what Efren had to do to beat Shannon and Rodney. To see live, Scott Frost, hug the ground after he finally got what he deserved, to see John Bumbrack devastate the bank competition,to see the disappointment of a 14.1 specialist who traveled all the way from Europe only to be defeated by a sharp shooting cocky 9 ball champion, is the things money cant buy.
I cannot thank you guys enough. You have taken on the burden of Hercules to bring to us what we could only dream of. May you live forever.

Ooooh that is my plan. I don't think it will be an issue because I don't plan on being there for the entire week. I want to be there for the 14.1, 9 ball and of course to watch the action. I figure on being there for half the week. I'm also sure that I'll be coerced into making some sort of deal before going.

Nice way to not be capable of paying attention.

I've been on Jeanette's side for a long time. Even an idiot could tell that.

Fred

I dont think it was just her side you were on.... you were all over her. :D
In all honesty you guys were a bit over the top FOR JL. She would shoot a ok routine ball and it was turned into "OMG what a shot" etc.
Not a big deal for me but it did get a little old.

I commend JL for stepping in the ring and putting herself out there. Well done.

Fred -- thanks for your commentary and manning the booth.

TAR had issues but its not like they didnt know it. They tried to put out the best stream that they can and they do that everytime.
I am sure they will review the issues and try to solve the problems.

Thanks to the TAR gang. I really didn't watch that much once I bought the feed but I saw alot during the free period. Interestingly the free stream had zero issues for me.

I would love to see a way to make the screen larger and keep the chat window during the PPV stuff.

Hope the gaming commision and the host site did not cause too many long term issues for you guys.

My Opinion

TAR had some good matches on there I got to watch and enjoyed, seeing Harry Platis play for some big dollars and also John Henderson playing solid. Jeanette Lee playing Tedder was interesting, I started watching at 25-15 and saw a great come back with some twist and turns. This was all for free!

I did do a good deal of modding along with a few others, we would tag each other in. Modding is tough, you want to be laid back but not let people talk smack about players and make nasty comments about females on there, that should not be tolerated at all. I banned atleast a dozen people, one decided to send me threatening emails because he is a washed up pro player and I banned him for being disrespectful, he threatened me and TAR, funny stuff.

I think the chat needs to be cleaner during certain hours and certainly respectful to female players/commentators and also people should not dog players, you would think that everyone in the chat is a world champion or something. I think the commentary is good and funny but sometimes I have heard players being scoffed at for bad play, not everyone plays like SVB or great all the time, it seemed like the winning guy was the man and the losing guy was just a sucker. I know alcohol can be a factor, I myself have done it during live streams and cursed a bit and acted goofy too.

I feel sorry for TAR because they are trying to provide an affordable service to the pool community who would never be able to see the DCC and the backroom action and probably did not do well this time around. I remember when they first did it and how exciting it was to see, I was losing so much sleep and still found myself 2 years later losing sleep when Tedder and Jeanette were playing.

I think the PPV model is not a good one and have said it all along but until the economy picks up and the companies in pool start to realize spending there advertising dollars on streams is the best bang for there buck it is just what TAR has to do to cover stuff. With PPV you have to deal with people who cant get things to work because they might not have there computer right or minds right, you got tech problems on both ends at times, refunding money and on ad on along with nits. I see sponsors who advertise in pool newspapers and magazines or some sites with little traffic when TAR probably had 100,000 viewers if not more for the DCC, talk about getting exposure for your product.

I rarely chase after sponsors and just recently started sending emails, some reply they have no money for advertising, not ready to, or do not get back to you. IMO they are losing out because the streams are mostly free or could all be free for fans and that is big numbers of people viewing LIVE pool being interactive unlike a mag or newspaper. Well enough going on and on but TAR rules and I appreciate the streaming I did get to watch, with streaming there will be problems and there are no guarantees there wont be with so many little variables.

That's not an unlikely scenario. A lot of the hotels are going to all internet based content - you would THINK that this would mean overall better bandwidth speeds for all users but who knows.

I think the chat needs to be cleaner during certain hours.

Since you brought it up....

while Johnny Ervilino was certainly a great player maybe you could do some "modding" to your sig line?

But... maybe it's just me... I always was a bit of a prude. :groucho:

After reading through this thread and the emails I have received over the last 9 days or so I want to thank the people who get what we are trying to do. Your kind words, help and support mean more than you know.

I will write a detailed account of things from my perspective later. We just finished packing up things a little while ago and have a plane to catch in a few hours. Plus I am still probably a little too wound up to write objectively. Thanks again to those who showed patience and kindness to us.

One thing I have to say and it is about a very small minority of people I dealt with this past 9 days. I will never understand why someone will stay online complaining for DAYS about something when it becomes clear that for whatever reason it will not work for them. Wouldn't a normal person just turn it off and go do something else? Some of the emails I received made me feel like I had heisted their retirement fund or cleaned out their checking account. Crazy.

You are a serious hard-working guy with a dedicated team, clearly doing everything possible to make the whole stream experience as good as it can be. I don't get to watch it only because I am there, but all I see going on in the TAR room has to be good to watch back home for those who cannot be there in person. Your equipment set up this year blew me away! It sounds like the main issue is the bandwidth -- and as viewership goes up, so does bandwidth demand, right? Anyway to channel your stream through off-site servers that could handle the traffic better?

I think you deserve big props for doing what you do, and bringing this live action to so many people who would otherwise miss out COMPLETELY.

See you next year!!

Not a big deal for me but it did get a little old.

I get one guy saying I was dissing Jeanette for three days, and another that I was over the top for her. As always, the truth is somewhere in the middle. I think the few minutes that John Barton pointed out where I was "on tilt" in the commentary booth should prove I wasn't all over Jeanette.

Examples of actual commentary:

"Jeanette is wearing those dangling earring again. They look elegant and she looks totally stunning with them, but I have to believe they are distracting. They swing and hit her cheeks every time she bends over a shot. Bad wardrobe move Jeanette."

"She shot a great shot there (ed. - simple shot, but the correct way that wins her the game). The right shot. Maybe she's finally figuring out how to shoot on a bar table. She's shown her inexperience at it all week."

These are two examples that I will get hit for being all gushy on her from faction but all dissing her from the other.

Fred

Might you help us better understand your tech obstacles?

The hotel network would drop out completely or go from 1.4 megs up to 200K out of nowhere.

What causes this? More internet use throughout the hotel? Issues from the Internet Service Provider? When your feed was free and you had mega hundreds viewers, was that high usage causing more issues than when you broadcast PPV with far fewer viewers?

In the end it is on us, so we just wont do it again unless we can be as sure as possible that we have the connection we need.

How do you get "as sure as possible"?

... seems it's an incredibly difficult situation you face when you are at the mercy of so much outside your control. I hope you can find new ways to reign in some of that unpredictability...

You may need to re-think you decision to have an "Action Room" in the future.

For those of us that can take the bad in order to enjoy the good, I have to disagree. Maybe you should re-think your decision to participate in TAR productions.

A little understanding goes a long way. All it takes is to go to one event where TAR is broadcasting from and watch what they do. Until you experience it first hand you're only guessing what you think you know. Remember it wasn't all that long ago that you were blaming TAR because you couldn't see their stream and it ended up being your provider. You learned then that you were wrong. Maybe you should visit TAR the next time they're in your neck of the woods and educate yourself. Those of us that have seen it first hand seem to be the most understanding. Knowledge is key.

Do people realize that it cost $15 a day to watch the DCC live in person - $9 if you wanted a day or evening session. Half the days, TAR brought the feel of the Derby for FREE. I wasn't on the mic during the PPV but during this FREE time, I used my friendship with Scott Frost and Gabe Owen to have them come into the booth. You got to listen to the two top one pocket players in our country give their insight into the game. Many other top players got on the mic as well, all doing the broadcast for FREE. They also get on the mic because they respect TAR and what they are doing for pool. It is unfortunate that some of the viewers don't give the same respect.

I would vote that next year TAR charge every day for the coverage. Seems to me that some people quickly forget what they got for FREE and just wanna b!tch when they had to pay a small fee. None of these type of threads appeared when it was FREE.

p.s. If someone could ever explain to me why people constantly ask in the chat 'Is so and so pool player there?" If the answer is yes, what did the person in the chat expect the commentators to do. Run around the DCC to find them so they could see that some guy that goes to the same pool hall as them is in the chat or did they want us to simply write down and deliver a message. Next year, if you want to know if someone is there - CALL THEM. If you don't know them well enough to have their phone #, then they probably could care less that you were asking about them anyways.

I agree with you 100%. You did a good job on the chat aswell.
