TAR podcast reviews/suggestions

Beav I think you need to translate each one into French. That will not only allow you to finally use that masters degree you have but also help those players from Canada listen and watch the interviews.

Discussed in the podcast that REALLY NEEDS more attention in the pool industry and community is the USA Pool League.

With a modest 24 active leagues in the past 18 or so months $15,000 has been raised towards a legitimate pro-fund. But the USAPL is growing! Now imagine with even a conservative national 30,000 membership. That would give a framework and foundation for a real pro tour in the US that is not contingent on the whims or successes or failures of any given individual. The USAPL is also a truly good league system and an opportunity for individuals to develop their own business as a USAPL League Manager. There is not another league in the US that either has the resources or is willing to do that.

There are some fantastic USAPL territories that have been started and managed by knowledgable folks in pool. I applaud each of them for their desire and vision.

  • Alabama, Birmingham: Mike Cantanese (Monday 8-Ball travel and Thursday 8 and 9 Ball Travel)
  • Colorado, Denver: Samm Diep Vidal (Tues. & Wed. in-house and travel)

Hi Tom,

I appreciate your comments and glad you listened in.

You stated that there might have been to much bashing of CW, ABP, and Payball (Bonus Ball).

My response is that I feel these topics MUST be discussed and how they affect the overall landscape of pool in the US. Obviously I have different opinions of those topics but I feel we expressed them in an honorable fashion. The pool playing public needs to see the conflicts these topics have created. Some are not even logical. I think these were positives because the facts should be open for everyone to discuss.

The format should probably be more structured - but it was just off the fly this time. In the future, we will try to have a method of responding to listeners questions.

Sometimes I am guilty of rambling all over the place. Justin keep me in line fairly well and I was kinda happy with the way it all ended.

Bottom line, I would welcome the possibility of discussing anything with anybody - as long as I am qualifeid to do so. I will say this, I am not going to lie and I am not going to answer every quesiton. But I will be honest as i can be.

I would encourage everyone to let us know what your thoughts and suggestions are.

Mark Griffin

It was a lot of bashing on CW, ABP, and Payball with nobody from their side to be able to reply.
It might very well be recognized as taking Marks side. So if you want TAR itself to be neutral, which maybe would be a clever idea, one should invite someone taking the stand for CW/ABP/Payball.

Further suggestion:
Many people may be interested in how excactly and in what amounts money is involved in these matches. Do the players solely bet their own money or are they staked or have some insurance? In what amounts and what kind of sidebets are going on?
Maybe talk some big numbers, it will attract peoples attention as it always does (e.g. Poker). Betting is phun and all this information could very well make these events more exciting and attract more people than just the ones that solely focus on pool billiards, which as you already stated in your podcast #1 never really came out big time. So you might wanna add something else to attract peoples attention. Poker also is not that big because its a nice card game to play (one might argue that ).
Also you are "theactionreport" so maybe you should "report about action" that`s going on in the pool world.
As in Poker people love the gossip about some pros loosing big hands and stuff! You might be one of the few people that can give such information. So who`s gabling out there? Some big Rivalries going on? Give the people gossip, they love it and as you can see all over: it sells big time!

But the main thing would be: Go on and bring us some matches

Mark is TAR. TAR is good. CW is bad.

Um, "action" can refer to things other than pool gambling. I think it's perfect that Justin is wiling to mix it up and talk about things in a real and frank way.

I am sure that the ABP or Bonus Ball or CW or anyone is WELCOME to come on the TARCAST and talk frankly about their views.

I am sure Justin would hold a live debate if the parties are willing.

I, for one, had NO CLUE that Bonus Ball is trying to lock up all the pros into a six month exclusive weekly tournament which would effectively close them out of playing in any other events for that time.

I disagree.

ABP and CW should have been bashed MORE then they were.
Corrupt business practices/favoritism/general shoot yourself in the foot stupidity have no place within the industry.

It would be GREAT to see 2nd tier pros cleaning up, while the "stuck up, we are the greatest/worship us because we are so awesome", top tier pros go BROKE.

Absolutely LOVE this idea.
I believe the pros deserve to be rewarded financially for being the top players of their profession, but kick the stuck up egos to the curb.

Ban any pro that complains ON THE SPOT.

Nothing straightens a pool player out quite as effectively, as watching someone else get paid money that they consider THEIRS.

Good luck with everything.

great podcast. can't wait to see more of them.

in regards to the "bashing" - this isn't a news show and they are giving their opinions and insight into hot pool topic, and being industry insiders know quite a few more details than us in the general public, in a talk show type of format. i think that if anyone mentioned has an issue with what was said then contact them and get on the show. i would love to see cw or the bonus ball guy or the apa people get on there.

Charlie or any DP rep is welcome to sit down for a podcast and talk about their point of view on anything I or Mark said. Same goes for the ABP and Bonus Ball. One person associated with Bonus Ball suggested on Facebook I should contact Larry Chiborak and that he thought he would be happy to sit down and talk about Bonus Ball. I will do just that.

As for your questions about TAR matches I have answered them on this forum numerous times before but just to make it easy I'll run it down for you:

The players entry fees (which is what we consider them because we are basically doing two man tournaments) come from different places. Some guys use all their own money, some have a backer or some combination of the two. We pay the players a fee for the video rights and usually cover expenses it all depends on the individual match. TAR doesnt get involved with any side bets of any kind. We do not hold money, we do not make lines. What spectators decide to do is none of our business and out of our control.

As for reporting action that is how we started out but quickly morphed into a production and promotion company. The thing with action is most people who actually are involved in it do not want their business made public. I always try to respect that and it is the reason people trust me not to run and tell every little thing I see or hear. The Action Report has become a brand for a certain type of match and for live streaming big tournaments.

As for bringing matches I am always working on it. Next Thursday on the podcast I will be announcing the details of TAR 23. Thanks for your questions and observations I hope we can put something together that interests you.

Edit to add: Mark is a partner in TAR and a very good friend of mine. We see eye to eye on most things. On the subjects we differ on we discuss our opinions. If you watch the the podcast closely you'll see a few points we disagree on. Both of us are big boys and are fully capable of listening to someone else's point of view and changing our position if the argument convinces us. Both of us also have acquired a low tolerance for bullshit and have developed a finely tuned detector for that most common of substances in the pool world.

30 replies? I guess cue makers, aiming systems and rule questions are the hot topics for 2011.

Sorry Mark and Justin, the podcast is a good idea, just not too many AZers have an opinion.

Thanks for those who took the time to respond.

Looking forward to next week's podcast. When will it be known who will join JCIN?

Both of us also have acquired a low tolerance for bullshit [...]

Haha i don`t know if that saying exists in english but in german we say: Well roared, lion!

Thanks for the answer. Knowing nothing about the US-Gambling world i just wanted to share my point of view on the chances and potential of pool getting big through what you`re doing.
I think the gambling and betting aspect really could boost up things a bit if it is commercialized properly. It certanly works with poker and IMHO you can draw at least some parallels to that.
I liked the idea of theactionreport right from the beginning and i think you are doing really fine and hopefully will get even more successful with your business!

Btw regarding the "bashing" thing: The podcast is supposed to be for everyone, right?! I was a viewer that had no clew about how close TAR and Mark are and how "evil" (;)) ABP etc. is. So this looking like bashing to me might still be a useful feedback.

Have a great day,
Markus

thnx ..guess i'll watch it on u tube, and participate next time.

You need to stop messaging me with your BS, I have nothing to do with you not being able to watch anything on Ustream. If anyone wants to see what I am talking about just click on my profile and check out the visitor message he left me. You are the one who needs to get a life and some common sense. ;)

P.S. Atleast I use my real name and people know who I am.

you got a foolish personna

Listen. I have no beef with you whatsoever and have no idea who you are or what your talking about. You complained 6 months ago about being banned in the chat by a mod mlalum and started a thread on here, well that is not my problem and there is nothing I can do about it. I have no control over Ustream and your problems there, sorry your not the brightest when it comes to technology.

I take that post at the value intended. I may be wrong about you.:embarrassed2:

Well why don't you state your problem clearly so I can address the issue. You seem to think I have control over Ustream and that is why you cannot watch stuff or whatever, it has nothing to do with me. Mlalum was a mod here and there during my streams, not sure what you guys have going on or why you were banned but I do not appreciate being insulted for no reason whatsoever when I am providing free service to the pool community.

Lenny relax, i may be wrong about you. done and done. I think your insult radar needs a tweek.

Relax....when someone makes a thread 6 months ago being foolish and now leaves a message on my AZ profile with more foolish gibberish. I think I also recall you emailing me or messaging me on here with a bunch of crap, it was done and done then until your back attacking me for things that have 0 to do with me. Good night sir and thanks for supporting pool like you do.

I thought this thread was about the TAR podcast..can we say..beating a dead horse?

BTW. The podcast was amazing..it was very informative. Some may or maynot agree with the topics discussed but at least the AZB crowd has more content to think about and another medium to discuss pool related topics.
