Team Philippines vs. Team America

European

Why won't someone put Marcus Chamat on a team? Where's the European team? :p

barouty is a fine 14.1 player and i love his patterns, but he is simply not "world-class".

Bruin,

I must say I'm very surprised by your assertion here. Danny Barouty is a world-class 14.1 player in every respect. I say that not as his friend but as someone who's watched his game over the years, and as someone who's seen the faces of other top players when they draw him.

In the last 18 months alone, Danny has won and come in 2nd in the NJ State 14.1 tournament, won Pete Sinkler's PA tournament twice (I believe), and come in 2nd in Grady's big one (North Carolina?). If you want to claim that these tournaments aren't true world-class play (except for the latter, which was), will you allow me to counter that there just haven't been many huge 14.1 tournaments in recent history?

Danny's also had to deal with a lack of respect from the BCA over the years; he didn't get the chance to play in many of the World Opens, and those he did were almost always because they made him win a qualifier first.

In my opinion, anyone that is a threat to run out from any open inning - no matter the score - is a world class player. And I've seen him do it over and over.

1993 World Team Challenge - finally someone posted the video. These guys were only playing for 30K. Got to love these Americans who played for the love of the game.

Marco Marquez is not Puerto Rican...

When the original World Team competition took place in the early 90's 1993?), Team USA with powerhouse names of the time didn't make it out of their bracket (North America Region) losing to Team Puerto Rico. This was probably the wakeup call that the "rest of the world" wasn't rolling over anymore.

Team Philippines easily won the entire event, as Team Puerto Rico was their only challenge at the time. Today, things would be different, but Team Philippines would be favored, IMO.

BTW, IIRC, Team Puerto Rico had names like Mike Lebron, Frankie Hernandez, Tony Robles, and Marco Marquez, guys that really don't exactly live in Puerto Rico. Believe it or not, Marquez was their weak link!!! Marco Marquez? The weak link??? That's strong.

Team Philippines had Efren, Parica, Franciso, Leonard Andam, and Rudolpho Luat. No weak links here, as all have won major open titles in the U.S.

Fred

Fred the PR Team that beat the US was composed of Frankie Hernandez, Tony Robles, Mike Lebron, Efran "Evangelista" Morales and Jose Robles (no relation to Tony). The last two players in this list being from the Island of Puerto Rico, and the best 9 ballers of that time. Marco Marquez is not Puerto Rican and has never been a part of Team Puerto Rico. Other Team Puerto Rico members were Alan Rolon, and Julio Aquino. Alan being from Puerto Rico also and Julio currently living in the U.S.A. (Check his name at the Florida Pro Tour's ranking).

We (Puerto Rico) could easily form another team and they wouldn't necessarily have to be Puerto Ricans living in the U.S.A.

Just ask Archer, Gabe Owen, Mike Davis, Corey Deuel, Tony Robles, Frankie Hernandez, Rob Saez, whom all have lost (except Archer) in tournaments celebrated in Puerto Rico. We only consider 2 players in Puerto Rico as competent Pro's, whom could very easily be competing in the U.S. but have elected to stay in our Island. All our other players could give a hell of a time to any of the current U.S. Players.

1993 World Team Billiards

Team America was composed of: Johnny Archer, Kim Davenport, Mike Sigel, Nick Varner, Buddy Hall, Allen Hopkins, Earl Strickland, CJ Wiley, Lou Butera, Loree Jon Jones, David Howard, and Jim Rempe. A sure hell of a list of players......

I guess the actual team against the Phillippines and Puerto Rico was Earl Strickland, Johnny Archer, Jim Rempe, Buddy Hall, and Mike Sigel based on a photo I have but would have to do additional research.

Team Mexico: Ernesto Dominguez, Francisco Galindo, Marco Marquez, Rafael Martinez, Ismael Paez.

I already gave this year's US Open and KOTH as evidence. Just look at the first four players on Team Philippines...Reyes, Busta, Manalo, and Alex. Each one of them can consistently beat ALL the players from Team America. I don't think too many people would argue with that statement.

I would..Earl DESTROYED Efren in their last head to head meeting! The US Open. Accu-stats has it on DVD. Earl beat Busta in thier last WPC finals. When Earl plays the pinoys in the FINALS, he usually wins!

I enjoyed seeing that picture and got a chuckle seeing Frankie Hernandez's hairdo. :D

I bet he would cringe if he saw that picture, being that he is so meticulous about his hair today! :p

SIR,
PLEASE INVITE PHILIPPINES POOLPLAYERS
WHEN YOU HAVE A POOLTOURNAMENT TOGETHER WITH U.S.A
IN
THE WONDERFUL ISLAND OF PUERTO RICO

Hello Harold
Team America, as I am sure you will recall, were ousted from the tournament by your team before the finale. This meant that the four semi finalists at The Riviera in Las Vegas were Team Philippines, Team Puerto Rica, Team Germany and Team Ireland.
I was the Team Ireland coach and to our utter amazement we beat your Team Puerto Rica. We played Team Philippines in the final - Efren, Django, Parica, Luat and Andam. At the end of the first 20 minute segment we were ahead 4-3. Then they broke for commercials, trick shots and an instructional slot. When we eventually resumed play our captain scratched from the break and we lost the match 7-4.
As the tournament was sort of double elimination your team beat Germany and faced Ireland for the 2nd place playoff. The match was pretty close until late in the game PR took a two rack lead. Then captain Mike Lebron got smart. There was a 30second shot clock in operation and he used the maximum time to shoot his shots and he ran the clock out for a revenge victory.
I still have most of the matches taped.
The first place prize was US$50,000 with the other three teams sharing a further US$50k. I don't know if Don Mackey paid out to everybody. But after a ten month wait for our money I managed to get a banker's draft for 17 Grand from him.
Happy Days

Something I noticed looking through major tournaments results from the past year is that if there are only two or three Filipinos in the competition they ARE beatable. When there are four or more then it starts to become a given that two at least finish in the top three. When first place is BIG BUCKS they manage to sweep.

Terry

You'll be surprised to know that at the last World Straight Pool Championships,
there were only 2 Filipinos who played (Warren Kiamco and Dennis Orcullo) and
they went pretty deep in that tournament. Considering that 14.1 is a new
game for them, that's a good accomplishment.

I'm surprise that only a few mentioned Dennis Orcullo as one of the Filipino
entries. Somebody even said that after Reyes, Parica and Pagulayan, nobody
from the Philippines is good enough at 1P. I just read somewhere that Orcullo
just beat Deuel for the dough playing even at 1P.

I'll take out Sambajon and Parica and replace it with Alcano and Orcullo,
together with Reyes, Bustamante, Manalo and Pagulayan, that team is
formidable.

FYI, Alex has dual citizenship but has been representing the Philippines the
past 2 or more years now...

Who do you think will win at this match-up using the format of the Mosconi Cup? Let's say that Team America is composed of the current Mosconi cup players:

Johnny Archer
Rodney Morris
Earl Strickland
Shawn Putnam
Jeremy Jones
Charlie Williams

and Team Philippines will be made up of:

Efren Reyes
Francisco Bustamante
Marlon Manalo
Alex Pagulayan
Santos Sambajon
Jose Parica

Any thoughts?

I think if you'd replace Charlie Williams and Shawn Putnam and Jeremy Jones with SVB and Corey Deuel and John Schmidt...THEN you have a match! I have to admit though that I think a lot of it will depend on whether or not Earl shows up with his 'A' game.

I agree with SVB, Deuel and Schmidt.

If someone was putting together a US team that needed to have a legitimate chance at beating a Team from Taiwan or the Philippines then the choices would have to be the hottest players IMO. They do it in golf with the Ryder Cup selections if I am not mistaken.

Yo, Shane, how ya doin?

I think you hit the nail on the head with your comment.Put up the current hot players against Team Philippines and they might have a chance. Problem is, when you tackle a group of players from the P.I. you have to support each other mentally, otherwise you won't have a chance.

These guys are hard to beat when they are going after one thing as they put all of their desires in one. Back in the P.I. they go their own ways, but in a foreign place, they BOND together. That is the key to their consistent winning ways. As a group they are formidable!!!

As the saying goes, "United we stand, divided we fall!!"

Take Charlie Williams out of that line up, replace him with my mother and you might have a team.

I agree with you. I see 2 on the US team that should be replaced and it would make for a better match with the Philippines.....
