Team Philippines vs. Team America

I think if you'd replace Charlie Williams and Shawn Putnam and Jeremy Jones with SVB and Corey Deuel and John Schmidt...THEN you have a match! I have to admit though that I think a lot of it will depend on whether or not Earl shows up with his 'A' game.
Excellent choices to beef up the US team!

Not that my opinion is worth anything when it comes to a Team America, since I have no expertise in playing pool.

However, if I were to pick the members of Team America and was not restricted by in-country politics for picking a real representative of the talent that we have here in the States, it would go like this:

Shane Van Boening a/k/a The South Dakota Kid
Dennis Hatch a/k/a The Hatchetman
Corey Deuel a/k/a The Prince of Pool of the 21st Century
George Breedlove -- [I don't know if he has a nickname]
Larry Nevel a/k/a "The Silent Giant"

And the sixth and final member I would select would be the winner of the 2007 U.S. Open this year; in other words, to be determined! Hopefully, it will be an American. :D

I base my selections on how I have seen the above-referenced players compete overall, with the consistency of wins as well as high rankings in the events that they participate in.

SIR,
PLEASE INVITE PHILIPPINES POOLPLAYERS
WHEN YOU HAVE A POOLTOURNAMENT TOGETHER WITH U.S.A
IN
THE WONDERFUL ISLAND OF PUERTO RICO

Several phillipino players have been here including Efren, Andam, Luat, Parica, and Bustamante.

I guess someday we'll have a true big international event in Puerto Rico. Lots of Puerto Ricans just enjoy watching and talking about the greatness of the Filipino players. Has a lot to do with the Spanish heritage our Islands share.

Hello Harold
Team America, as I am sure you will recall, were ousted from the tournament by your team before the finale. This meant that the four semi finalists at The Riviera in Las Vegas were Team Philippines, Team Puerto Rica, Team Germany and Team Ireland.
I was the Team Ireland coach and to our utter amazement we beat your Team Puerto Rica. We played Team Philippines in the final - Efren, Django, Parica, Luat and Andam. At the end of the first 20 minute segment we were ahead 4-3. Then they broke for commercials, trick shots and an instructional slot. When we eventually resumed play our captain scratched from the break and we lost the match 7-4.
As the tournament was sort of double elimination your team beat Germany and faced Ireland for the 2nd place playoff. The match was pretty close until late in the game PR took a two rack lead. Then captain Mike Lebron got smart. There was a 30second shot clock in operation and he used the maximum time to shoot his shots and he ran the clock out for a revenge victory.
I still have most of the matches taped.
The first place prize was US$50,000 with the other three teams sharing a further US$50k. I don't know if Don Mackey paid out to everybody. But after a ten month wait for our money I managed to get a banker's draft for 17 Grand from him.
Happy Days

I remember reading about this tournament a long time ago. The article mentioned how the teams placed in the tournament. It is good to know these details. Thanks for sharing them

With regards to payment.......some are still waiting....

Who do you think will win at this match-up using the format of the Mosconi Cup? Let's say that Team America is composed of the current Mosconi cup players:

Johnny Archer
Rodney Morris
Earl Strickland
Shawn Putnam
Jeremy Jones
Charlie Williams

and Team Philippines will be made up of:

Efren Reyes
Francisco Bustamante
Marlon Manalo
Alex Pagulayan
Santos Sambajon
Jose Parica

Any thoughts?

igme,
Nice thread you started here. Good job!

My comments are I think that if you replace Sambajon, Parica and Bustamonte with Alcano, Orcollo and Luat you add A LOT to the Philippines already strong team.

My Team America would be comprised of
Earl Strickland
John Schmidt
Corey Deuel
Rodney Morris
Johnny Archer
Shane VanBoening

I was wondering if Hohmann is an American citizen now or just a resident of Florida.
If or when he does take the oath, I'll change my squad to include him.

I'm sorry, but this would be no contest. That's just the plain truth. Just take this year's US Open and KOTH as evidence.

A better matchup would be Team Philippines vs. Team Taiwan, with the Taiwan team consisting of...

Ching-shun Yang
Fong-pang Chao
Chia-Ching Wu
Pei-Wei Chang
Po-Cheng Kuo
Hui-Kai Hsia

Now that's a matcup i'd pay to see.

I'm in this thread late, but I agree 100% with jsp. The Taiwanese team looks to be THE murderer's row. I would take them over team Philippines in 9 ball but stay with the Filipinos if the game were 8 ball.

This is a bit ridiculous. Looking at the last two major championships:

At the US Open, Pagualyan, Parica and Bustamante came 1,2,3.

At the IPT 8-ball event, in the tournament to face the king of the hill, Reyes, Bustamante, and Manalo, came 1,2,3.

The Fillipinos are the real deal, and have proved it time and time again.

Warren Kiamco, Rodolfo Luat, Ronnie Alcano, Antonio Lining, Leonardo Andam and Edgar Acaba (call them the Fillipino "B" team) would probably be favored over the American team you've put together.

SJM,
Sorry I'm in this thread so late, but I'de like to make a comment on something. Your post #45 on this thread was your 5,830th post. I have disagreed with 2 of your previous posts out of that 5,830 so this is rarer than Haley's Comet, but here goes #3.
Ronnie Alcano and Rudolpho Luat on the Philippines "B" team? Alcano, the current World 9 Ball and World 8 Ball Champion on the JV squad?
I'm missing something that you must see. You would consider Santos Sambajon on the "A" team but not Alcano or Luat? I'm stuck here. Can you help me with your train of thought?
Thanks :)

Yeah, the thing you're missing is that this thread was started in 12/2005, and the majority of the posts were made over 1.5 years ago. ;)

That's why Alcano and especially Orcullo are missing from the original list. Both of them weren't household names until last year's IPT season started.

Likewise, that's why SVB and John Schmidt aren't on the original American list.

Edit: BTW, Danny Harriman should make the American list as well.

I'm sorry for confusing people. This is an old thread that I revived after I found the video of Team Philippines VS Team USA in YouTube.

I just don't want to add another thread.

2005, Santos was on fire, Alex's heart was not in the "right-place," and Alcano and Orcullo still had to make a name for themselves.

Now, we know that we used to have a team competition in which pride is the one on the line and not the pocket.

Oh NO!!!! I'm the dummy of the day here!
I got several things to say...
1. Eeeee-oouu (bray of a donkey)
2. How in the world can I get rid of my question to SJM before he sees it and refuses to ever speak with such a moron again?
3. I did not see that this thread was piggy-backed and I'm sorry for jumping in without looking. I wondered how all these posts got there so quick, that's why I mentioned I was jumping in late.
4. I very sorry for being a dummy:confused:

This funny

.....Reading this old thread, ...Cornerman never even hints he may have posted bad information:eek:
