The APA can kiss my.......

The APA doesn't even pretend to be in business for the profit of the players. If you want to make a profit playing pool, you need to play pro. Why would anyone even think that playing in a self proclaimed amateur league would be a good way to make money?

As for the league operators making money, well, that is their job, and they should be profitable. I don't know what kind of job you have, but I'm betting whatever it is, if you didn't make any money, you probably wouldn't do it.

We work to make money. We play to have fun. Where is it written that poolplayers should be paid for playing? Especially, amateur poolplayers!

APA is a business designed to make money. So is Wal-Mart. Do you expect Wal-Mart to pay you to shop there?

If you don't like what they are selling, don't buy it. But don't slam them for trying to make a living. Considering some of the whining I hear, I suspect many LO's earn EVERY PENNY they make running their leagues!

Steve

I never stated anything about the members of the league should be paid. And since I do not like what the APA is selling, I don't buy it, thanks for the advice though. I'm not slamming anybody for making a living, but think that people who go out and compete in that fashion and win, should be rewarded by more than a trophy from their L.O. who pocketed all of their money for the season and only showed up at the last night. Again, the APA does nothing to help the sport on a higher level.

BCA is the best league for pool in my opinion.

Woody...I'm not surprised at all...just tired of hearing it! Bashing the APA is probably in the top 3 posted threads on the forum. There's at least one thread about how "bad" the APA is every day.

There must be a reason for this! It is not rocket science, LOL. There are obviously many people who do not like or are not happy with the APA. This is no secret.

My point is that not even CLOSE to all APA L.O.'s are bad people, who are out to get rich, by getting over on the players...which is the singular point that 1on1pooltournys keeps beating into the ground.

If this is the only point you think I was making then you probably should go back and read again.

I can't complain about the APA. I don't play pool for the money, just for the enjoyment. I have been fortunate enough to have been on Vegas teams 6 of the last 8 years, though. No, you probably won't make enough money to break even, if you make it to Vegas, but you should have a hell of a time while you are there. If you want more money, stay out of the casinos and play more minis.

I play out of Frederick, Maryland. Terry Justice runs the APA in this area. His paperwork is always on time, there are seldom money or player problems that go un-handled, and his Tri-annuals and Vegas Qualifiers are always well run.

Personally, I could do without going to Vegas. After about the first day, playing pool in Vegas becomes work. Play starts early in the morning and usually ends early the next morning, then it starts all over again. I am an old man, and I just can't run with the big dogs anymore.....I have to get some rest. But, I do like competition, so if I am on another team with the opportunity to advance to Vegas, I will give it all I have got to try to get there, and while I am in Vegas, I will play as hard as I can. If I break even, great. If not, I had a really good time with some good friends.

The APA catches about as much flack as Wal Mart. Everyone complains about how evil Wal Mart is, but every time I force myself to go shopping (I'm a hunter not a gatherer) they never seem to be lacking customers. Seems a lot of folks like what Wal Mart sells and are willing to pay for it.

You are always going to be a target of ridicule when you are #1 in your industry.

The individual league operators have a lot to do with the perception of the APA. I bet if they gathered demographic information from those who have complaints, you'd see who the poor performing league operators are.

I agree that Valley/Dynamo barboxes are nowhere near as good as Diamond Smart Tables.

Well tables with good cloth, and rails that function as they should be they Valley/Dynamo/Diamonds would have been nice to have had. When the BACPL has there 8 Ball thing in May each year I have not heard of equipment problems on the forum.

KoolAid

I say BS. I have been here all week and the tables are fine. They are decent Valley Bar Boxes. Nothing more nothing less. To blame the equipment for your loss is just sour grapes. You will never get any better if every time you play on equipment that is less than perfect you can't play your best (and or win).

As far as the money. They didn't "take it back" as you say. They paid you $350 of your payout when you registered your team. The rest of your payout comes when you get knocked out. Everyone knows that.

This event is the best run amateur tournament in the world bar none.

Sounds like someone has been drinking the APA Koolaid for loooong time

Like I said, Bruce...Diamond Smart Tables are BETTER than Valley/Dynamo tables. The BCAPL uses only Diamond tables...gee, I wonder why? :D I'm sure it's not because they're the BEST tables!

Could it be that someone who is high up in the BCAPL is also part of Diamond Table Co??? Wonder if the has a oiece of Valley if the BCAPL would be using Valley's?

As far a Diamond being better, the only diamonds I ever play on were in a place that closed, and they were not real well taken care of.

Personally I like playing on a Brunswick Gold Crown 4.5 x 9.0, but maybe that is because I always am on the table.

Best is like Beauty it is a personal preference.

I know league operators in my area do not give a rats ass about pool and last I heard one guy raised the rates to play an extra $1 per night just to fatten his pocket more. It is a joke.

They say the extra $1 is for the travel fund. I say give me a break, the league operators dont know if they are playing real pool or bumper pool. Its pretty bad when someone buys a league just so they can manipulate the handicaps.

The APA is what it is...a place to play pool, for FUN, not PROFIT.

You, like most of the people who b*tch about the APA, don't really know what the league is about, and could care less.

You are right, the APA is what it is and that is deceiving. I know lots of people who play for fun and could care less about going to Vegas or whatever and that is the attitude to have but lots more think they have a legitiment chance at winning only to find out that the APA slogan of " everyone can play and anyone can win " is a total farse. It is no big secret that the only way to win is to not play full speed until it is absolutely necessary. I played for a few years and know this as well as anyone.

As for bltching about the APA, I just got back from Vegas and if I had a $1 for everyone time I heard someone bltching about something I would have broke even for the trip. I didnt go to play but to just get out of town and everytime you turn around there you hear " yeah they were a 3 but played like a 6 " or " our league operator raised all our handicaps before we left ".

I have been to Vegas 4 times(once for singles). I have never seen a 3 shoot like a 6. As far as table preference what does it matter if it is a Diamond or a valley as long they roll straight and the rails arent dead

It is the worst possible thing ever invented in pool, in my opinion and also stated by professional players and one of which is in the Hall of Fame.

It forces the members into losing on purpose in order to "keep a low rating". Their is no incentive for them to improve.

These statements are very true in certain ways. If you are looking to go out and have a good time and hit some balls around then the APA is just what you need. On the other hand if you are looking to get better there is no worse way than to go out and lose week after week just to be able to get a free ticket to Vegas or play in a state APA tournament. After losing for so long people develope bad habbits which subconciously will cause them to make mistakes when they are playing a " real match ".

I have been to Vegas 4 times(once for singles). I have never seen a 3 shoot like a 6.

A lot of times this is the number 1 excuse for losing. People would rather say they lost to an underhandicapped player than say they got beat on the square.

everytime you turn around there you hear " yeah they were a 3 but played like a 6 " or " our league operator raised all our handicaps before we left ".

Excuses! These are the only way some players can justify losing. The only other option would be that maybe they aren't as good as they think they are!

Some people would rather blame someone else, rather than accept responsibility for their own actions. These are the players who will never get better, because they don't get it.

Excuses are for losers.

Steve

I just got back from vegas! I am from the same town as 1on1, $takehor$e, and woody. I had an 8-ball team we placed 65 out of 712. I also played in the pre-regestered events. Masters and doubles I thought the tables played well for what they where. As for the APA it will always be a league full of people who want to complain about who is trying to cheat. I hear the same thing every year about handicaps. This league was made to make $money$ and thats what it does!!!!!!!! VNEA or BCA these two leagues are the best leagues for fair play for everyone!!!!!!

Best two statments in this thread imo.

OK, I already posted once to this thread but I keep reading the same crap. Blah, blah, blah blah blah........tables crappy......blah........balls dirty........blah....
My team got beat by the California Roll, who won it all in the Masters. We also got beat by the team that took 9th from the Detroit area. I repeat, we got beat, no excuses, we did not get bad rolls or bank balls off the tables.
Where were all these tables with bad rolls? Were these set up in the parking lot? I played or practiced on many tables and I also sweated the finals of the Masters up in the PentHouse of the Riv. I never saw a ball roll off more than a couple inches. I never witnessed a ball banked that jumped off the table due to a low rail.
I did notice that during the Masters final, there was only about 40 or 45 people watching the entire match. These were the best of the best at the APA and only 40 or 45 spectators. It was very sad to say the least.
There was tons of people in the ball rooms complaining about handicaps and bad rolls, meanwhile, the best were upstairs shooting lights out pool and not one of them complained about a bad roll in all of the quarterfinals or finals. They shook hands after the match and congratulated each other for shooting well. Let's hear from any of these players if the tables were playing badly.
I think all the people complaining about the tables are mostly low handicappers that couldn't play good on their best day. As for COOCOO COWBOY well, he can't play a lick, never plays leagues and does nothing but complain from behind his computer. I never met him and already dislike him just from his posts on this forum.
I don't usually play APA, in fact this was my only and probably last time. I prefer the BCA in May, but it is not because of the condition of the tables last week. OK, I'm done ranting and done with this thread. Let's move on and play pool.;)

tucson9ball...Tap, tap, tap! It seems the same with some of the pro events too...really small crowds, watching the best of the best!

$take Hor$e,

Next year, I'll have played all levels of BCAPL bar pool. Both during and after the Vegas event, all you hear is that guy's a Master, that other guy's a Pro, he should be a Grand Master ad nausium.... Probably no different than the APA. You also hear players *****ing about the playing conditions. For a different reason but still *****ing. The Diamond tables are so good, they make playing on Valley's torture. Wow, I hit that shot real good and it still hung. Translation, the shot hit short and it jarred. Back home that shot falls. Yep, on a Valley the shot does fall. You really missed it though!

At this years BCAPL Nationals, I played my first set absolutely flawless. didn't miss a shot. Never out of position. Just perfect! Later that day, I showed up for my second match. Got an earful from a BCAPL person about the level of my play. He got complaints. My second match things happened. Balls got funny. Made breakout shots and each time, one of my balls rolled up and froze to one of my opponents. Three times! Couldn't make it anywhere. Lost the match. Played every bit as well as the first match. No one *****ed at that! Sometimes poop happens. Complaining and pool players go hand in hand just as the three most famous words in pool. Woulda, coulda and shoulda.

And for APA Gene, if he really believes the APA Nationals are the best show in Amateur pool, he obviously was not in Vegas for this years for the BCAPL's. That was the best ever. Period!

Nice post. As for the low turnout at the master's final's you can thank the casino for most of that.

It was posted a while back that the Riviera had filed for bankruptcy and that this was the last year the tournament would be there, can anyone verify this. Imo it may not be the best hotel/casino but is is best for the players because it is cheap. If you take the price of rooms from other casinos out there you can bet that if it moves then turnout will be far less. I talked to the Wynn a few months ago about rooms and the cheapest one was well over $200 a night during the week and that is the next hotel from the Riviera. A few years ago there was a pool event going on down in the newer part of the strip at the same time as the APA nationals but it had no where near the room to accommodate the APA and the thousands of players that are involved.
