The AZ Room @ The Derby City Classic

Hey, CHANGE OF PLANS. OHB spoke with Greg Sullivan of Diamond who thinks we may offend the other cue-makers if we have sponsorship - so scratch that idea. I don't believe he wants us to be seen as a money-making organization.

I believe he also has concerns about food and beverages being brought in; as it affects the hotel. I'll talk with the manager of the hotel this week if possible and see if we can work out an arrangement that keeps us on the right side of the authorities.

As this is the first year for this; let's just try to keep it small and manageable; we'll cool our jets on the money-making schemes. It's his tournament, so what he says we will do (and happily at that).

Well, that is settled. I surely didn't mean to upset anyone. When you are a promoter, it is hard not to think like one.
You gotta figure a way to get beer in there though. It's vacation time.
I did learn a lesson last night about diet-beer though. I am through with it. I drank 13 lite beers last night and I didn't lose one single pound.

Don, I like this better. Let's keep this nice and neat, and then see how we can improve it for the coming years.

There will certainly be conflicts of interest between this private room and DCC operators because our sponsors might have booths outside as well...so I do think that Greg's point is valid.

Also, if the food is catered then Greg will have a say....but less if we just bring our own eats.

If the food thing doesn't work out, and after all the miscellaneous costs have been considered, I too think excess dough can be pro-rated back to the contributors.

You pulled the thought out of my head before I got to the end of your post.
I game of your choice for all of your clothes, When the loser is naked, the
next player is up ... lol Then I am wearing lots of layers of clothes and jewelry!

One little suggestion for fun ... That all AZ'rs have to do a trick shot of
their own making, and the best one performed gets a prize.
This sounds fun!

Minimum wager is $5 (they can void it if they want to play "hee-haw"). The type of game is decided by the first player; they both must agree on the stakes however. Options are one-pocket (?race to 1 or 2?), 9-ball (race to 3 or 4), 8-ball (race to 2), full rack banks (race to 1 or 2), 9-ball banks (race to 2 or 3), straight pool (race to 50). After the match the second player now holds the table (whether he won or lost), and plays the third player on the list. After that match (win or lose) the second player leaves the table for the third player. If we make the matches an appropriate length, then everyone will get about an hour or so at the table each time, and get to play 2 different opponents each time. If you want to play more, then just put your name back at the bottom of the list.

I personally, like the idea of race to 3 in 9-ball, race to 1 in one-pocket, race to 1 in 8-ball, race to 1 in full rack banks, race to 2 in 9-ball banks, race to 50in 14.1.

What do you guys think of this format???

I'm game for it. But what is Hee-Haw

Most the games you stated need roughly the same amount of time....but I would say race to 2 in 8-ball though. Also, I'm a shitty pool player and a race 50 in 14.1 can honestly take me up to 1.5 hours....but if you guys are all hotshots then I guess it's aight. ;)

I don't know who is on the cover. I was hoping it would be someone that's there so that I could get them to autograph some copies. In the past I've always known IP to give away the current copy on the stands. I don't know if I'll be able to pull it off due to the hectic scheduling of the tourney but I was hoping to maybe get a couple of pro's to maybe sit at the booth for a few min & sign autographs if at all possible. Ktown, I've forgotten half of what's been posted on this long thread. Are you going to be there? If not, I'll be more than happy to put a copy aside & get what autograph(s) I can for you and send it to you.

Can I get one too? I love IP!

Of course! IP gives the magazines out for free.... It's just a matter of finding people to sign it. ;)

I agree - Lets keep it Private, Intimate & Comfortable.

(IMHO) - I really don't see a big need for food. Anyone can always bring in their own dry snacks and I happen to enjoy the food at the restaurant. People are always walking around with their own little coolers so that is no big problem either.
Remember, there is a major tournament and a lot of action going on also. I'm sure we all are not going to want to spend all our time in this room.
This started out by trying to figure out a good place to congregate, meet & greet. Maybe off in a corner somewhere.
I myself intend to use this room for a rest stop and a place to relax. I like the idea of meeting & greeting all the other forum members and putting a face to a username. I do think it would still be nice to get some I.D. Tags for us.
I WANT TO MAKE THIS CLEAR - Greg Diamond did not make any demands on us. He just voiced some concerns that he has learned about over the years. He is a very nice and helpful guy that is trying to please everyone. I don't envy him one bit.
The big attraction, IMO will be the pros that stop by. Remember, They also might be looking for a comfortable place to relax and not have 50 people surrounding them for autographs.
Man, I'm going to love this - I already have thought of about 50 good old time pool stories to tell and about 5 or 6 of them might be true.

I can see where vendors may get upset. Vendors are paying good money to get their booths. Then there are the tournament sponsors paying, to just get their names and logos seen. The last thing we need is a feud with sponsors, that may already be supporting this forum through banner ads. I am glad this came to light, early.

Still looking forward to seeing all of you at DCC.
Don (Williebetmore),

Sorry it has taken me so long to respond. I've been on vacation since last Wednesday. I'm bringing my girlfriend as well. I'll go $50 instead of $20. I'd like for her to be able to play. Please add her to the list as well.

I'll PM you her name. I'm sending the check today.

Mike

The key to this room will be comfort. I hope the Ex. West can provide some comforatble chairs and or couches for us. We need padded chairs, not metal fold ups. My opinion only.

Beer in the AZ room.

I like all the game suggestions and like williebetmore, believe we should keep it manageable. My two suggestions are that we keep the room "Non Smoking" and no alcoholic beverages. We don't need an alcohol induced scenario to unfold. There are ample facilities available to smoke and imbibe.

See Ya at DCC

Cross Side Larry

By the way, anyone interested in buying the Gina Cue pictured on the lathe with Ernie Gutierez, cue maker extraordinaire, on page 32 of "Shooting Pool" with text by Mike Shamos and photographs by George Bennet. This beautiful multi inlaid ivory cue is also featured as the middle cue in the bottom center display on pages ten and eleven of the same magazine?

I would like to vote for this too.

thanks,

I wondered when it would get around to this. I have never been in a pool room where there was no smoking or drinking. I hope that this "Idea" is not going to be implemented.

Sorry - I don't agree!

Larry - I think we would be cutting our own throats if we tried to restrict the smoking and beers that quite a few still enjoy. I can think of many of the pros that wouldn't think of hanging around an atmosphere like that. I think that (in this day in age) most smokers are pretty aware and considerate of others and I've never seen any really drunks at the DCC. (Excluding R.A. and you never know if it's real or not). Remember this is a private room for just members. If we get the adjoining room (and I really hope we do), we could restrict these things to just that room. I guess when we all get there; we could take a vote on this. To me, part of relaxing includes smoking and a few beers (beer only after 2 or 3 am), so it would definitely exclude me and quite a few pros I KNOW OF.

I agree, if we get the second room, maybe do no smoking in one room. But overall, I think it should be open to the members who pay to smoke or drink if they choose. I'm coming there to play, but this is my vacation too. If the smoke gets too much, step out to the hall. It will be a great place to meet either way. My vote is cast. Sam

Why would we lynch you?????

Timberly said:
LOL, I'll tell you so long as you guys promise not to lynch me! They called me this week and made me an offer to work the booth since they knew I was going.... I just changed jobs so this whole week off of work will be unpaid... it was a no brainer.

I'll be working the Inside Pool booth.
They have a great Magazine in my opinion. I have talked with JR and different people working their booth's at different events and have always came away with a positive feeling about all of them. At least we all know where to come looking for you if you're not in our room. Sam

I'm friends with Sally & JR and think the world of them. I said don't lynch me because in the last yr there were some problems with people getting their magazines and there's been quite a few negative posts about them. ;)

Maybe we could use some bleachers?

To make the room more comfortable for everyone, maybe they could install some bleachers on one side of the room? What do y'all think? A room full of tables and chairs could get kind of claustrophobic. Much easier to watch a game or exhibition with bleachers.

the Beard

I like the bleacher idea - along with some padded chairs somewhere. Maybe OHB could discuss this with Greg next time.

I HATE CIGARETTE SMOKE, but I'm voting to permit smoking. Too much of a hassle to restrict now, since it wasn't discussed prior to soliciting donations. Realize that last year they restricted smoking inside the tournament room; so the hallway (where our room will be) is COMPLETELY FILLED with smoke at all times. I've always felt a little smoke exposure is a small price to pay for some top-flight pool competition and camaraderie.

Remember, cigarettes cut years off your life (but those years are at the end and they're pretty crappy anyway:) :) ).
