The best 9 months of my life

i hope she can get her old job back @ $60K/yr, her apartment back, her furniture, her car, clothes, and driver's license. i hope that if she chooses to visit her family here in Greensboro (or other friends elsewhere) for Christmas & New Year's, that she finds the means to do so.

Is this post your own words?.....
...or are you playing a Country and Western song backwards?

Yes, because there are terrific pool books out there now by Freddy the Beard and Jay, and a few others that are great but are not exactly selling like hotcakes, what makes you think anyone wants to read bout a road trip with someone playing apa 5's for $20 sets ?

Thank you for the excellent question. I'm pretty sure Freddy and Beard and Jay Helfert are men.

The dynamic of a woman on the road, embellished, polished and shined up by a good author or screen writer could make for a good book/movie.

I should shut up but these posts are something awful.

I wished Rhea the best of rolls, because its her life to do as she pleases. The nits that are criticizing her are IMO jealous. As if they are successes in their lives. I am sure I could pick apart any of them if they were an open book, like Rhea has done with hers.

You all sound like a bunch of know-it-all crybabies, unless you are saying you are perfect and extremely wealthy.

Maybe you all should have listened to your mother when she said if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all.

Merry Christmas and I wish all of you the best of rolls,

Ken

Umm. There would be a book or movie about Jeanette lee or dozens of other great woman players that would be as interesting as hell, and jennette has gambled more in one night than Rhea has in her whole life, so that's the movie I want to see

Finally someone with an opinion that I can respect.
Not sure what she did to the self righteous mob, but some of you guys should grow a pair.

Just saying, if that's not ironic I don't know what is. Anyone who posts personal failures online for all to read dosent care about the negative attention. All they see is "attention". Expect the scale to be from good-bad. If you don't know this the internet is the wrong place for you.

Hold on....

I did not lose $2,060. Expenses are not the same as a loss. I probably spent around $18,000 over those 9 months on travel, tournament entries, calcuttas, food, shelter, phone service, clothing, green fees, etc. Unfortunately I spent more money on expenses over that timeframe than I earned from gambling wins, and tournament wins. I only hope that next time I try again I can last longer on perhaps even less.

I agree with this analysis but at the same time, if my math is correct, that also means that you broke even for 8 months and had one losing month. That's a pretty good start to
"living the dream" !! Why did you quit??

I ran out of money. But I am actively seeking employment so I can save up, improve, then try again

You can draw unemployment checks.... The people at the social security office and department of human services can help you out. Free money and possibly a low income or rent free apartment.

When I hooked up with Rhea in Columbus, Ohio....

I don't think her game is as bad as everyone makes it out to be, her lack of making a game seems to where she fails. Action junkies always struggle to get the right spot. No, she isn't top speed but from what I understand road players didn't have to be top speed they just had to know how to make a game right.

That being said, is it even possible to go on the road anymore and make a living? I know that you can find people all over to gamble but with all the research that can be done don't most games end up being about even after weights given?

Edit: I'm to lazy to look up the other thread but did anything ever happen with the tournament that banned you?

The players there were using her like a punching bag. She just kept playing with every waking hour trying to get better. Losing every pennie that she was earning with her work.

I felt kind of bad and tried to help her. She could immediately see improvement in her game and could see that she could get better now. But the big challenge was to learn how to match up and manage the money.

Before I left Columbus I agreed to help her learn the ropes of the road and we would try it for a few weeks. Rheas car broke down so it turned into a little longer journey.

During this time her skill level went from about a c player to wherever her game is now. A or AA depending on where your at in the country but it was definitely so much better. . She could shoot pretty good but her mental game and strategy was far behind.

What I gave Rhea was a gift. A gift to a person that wanted to play pool and travel. Wanted to compete and play the game she loved. A shared all my knowledge from years of playing on the road and yes we did survive, in fact if I wouldn't have gotten sick we might have still been going.

Was it rough sometimes? Yes it was. Sometimes I would be almost screaming when we would leave a pool hall where she screwed up big time but she learned. She learned right from the school of hard knocks while being on the road getting it done.

Most players wouldn't even have a chance to last a minute on the road tucking their tail between their legs and heading for home. Rhea was all in and will be again. One tough cookie for sure.

I know this for a fact because I am a road player myself. I'm a little banged up after 3 major surgeries in the last 5 months, but as soon as I can I will be out there again.

I traveled the road for 15 years and almost no one even knew who I was still. That's doing it right. Hit and run and get out of town. Hard to do that now with the internet. Made allot of money and spent allot of money.

Am I ready to take on another challenge like teaching another player to survive on the road? maybe not. At least in my physical condition right now trying to rehab a new right knee I don't think so. . But it gives me the motivation to work hard so I can get back out there.

Kind of like the Call of The Wild, if anyone ever read that.

For others that have a strong family structure at home, kids and other traditional things going on this type of life doesn't make any sense at all and I understand.

But for Rhea this is an adventure in her life. Not a 9 to 5 job where everything is cut and dried and secure. This is exciting even though there can be some setbacks but that is part of the game.

I went through many of the same things that she went through over the years when I was younger. I just seemed a little smarter because I could beat most of the players on the bar table when I would go to a town..

I traveled a couple of times with other players. They lost all our money. After that I was always solo or I had total control over everything or we didn't go together but that didn't seem to work out well in the long run. The other person would think they were getting smart and would lose the money stupidly.

But you needed to book winners pretty steady because the expences just keep eating away at the bankroll.

Wherever your at Rhea, Good Luck and merry Christmas.

I know you'll be back on the road again and wish you the best.

For those of you that don't understand and never will. Oh well.

What can I say...It just depends on which side the coin your life is on.

Heads or tails. It's as simple as that.

To Rhea they are not failures..........

To many of the players on here this is the real thing. Not someone taking a little weekend stroll in the park.

She is living her dream and sharing the events.

To someone with a 9 to 5 , house , cat and 2 kids this might not make any sense at all but there are so many that can dream right along.

Let them dream and pursue their dreams. Let them share the passion that they have for the game they love and you love also.

And when someone like Rhea or any road player comes through a pool hall it's entertaining to say the least.

Just sit back, read and enjoy............

An A or AA player??? :yikes: :rotflmao1: :rotflmao: If this were even REMOTELY true, she would have no problems making $$$, and would not be scuffling, trying to find a real job.

One thing I know for sure, thinking your game skill level is higher than it is will lose your bankroll fast. Johnnyt

I guess you never seen her play her top speed........

I know how to rate players being on the road myself for years and being active in tournaments.

regardless of being a AA player or a master player it is tough for any player to make it on the road today.

It's really hard to rate someone or down rate them on what you hear .

She can play pretty sporty when in top gear.

merry Christmas Scott................

Rating someone a double A means they are at very HIGH level of pool.

So whats her biggest package in 9 ball ? I expect atleast 5 on a 9ft.

Based on everyone else's word that has played her or seen her play, 'B' rated seems pretty generous.

Very true, this game does not suffer egos or fools. If you can't be brutally honest about what your level of play is or the level of others then you can't match up properly & you will get busted. Oft times it takes getting busted to wake a player up to the reality of where their game really is. In this instance, with this player there still seems to be denial. Many have chastised those here who have pointed out the realities of the situation at hand, stating there is no need for the negativity. That if you can't say something nice then don't say anything at all. I don't agree with that position. I feel that those that encourage this individual when it's clear she doesn't have the skill level, no bankroll management skills, no knowledge of how to truly evaluate her game & that of others thereby losing all perspective of how to match up are actually far more harmful to this persons well being than those that point out these short comings. While the critics may seem brutal, at least they're honest and not encouraging a lamb to run to slaughter like the well wishers do. Just my perspective.

Very true, Johnny....I know players that are at championship level but
their money is only worth a dime on the dollar in action.
Many good players have broke more backers than players.

You know what, I've been thinking exactly the same thing myself. I've got the wig, the dress, and the road map already, so why not?
