The BIGGEST bet???

BIG action!

OK, it wasn't really 'big' action but at the time, for me, it was.
1989, I was 18 and I got stationed in Colorado Springs, CO. I had just just got into the pool scene. Hanging out at Pinke's cue club we used to watch 'Marvelous Mark "The Arm" Estes shoot the lights out on a regular basis. He was the first real gifted pool player I had ever seen live. One Friday night I came in he was playing with some guy $200 a game.. they played for 20 games and Mark just drilled him! They next night the guy came back and Mark repeated his performance. I don't recall the guy even winning a single game both sessions. I know Mark is out in Vegas these days, I hope he still hits em with his 'Magic Meucci' cuz it was an amazing sight to see him in stroke.

Fat Boy,
because I collect alot of Black Boar Cues, (www.blackboarcustomcues.com ) I was contacted by some people that say they own Karas's Black Boar cue that he used and They attached a signed Affidavit from Karas about his run in Vegas.
Is it true that he used a Black Boar Cue?

Craig

i never make things up, when ever I say anything, and truthfully i cant remember what he was using, I think he had a sneeky pete at the pool room, Bobby bought a cue that was floating around the pool hall that he used in that game-i do remember that, but cant remember what it was it was around 2,000 i believe., my friend John Canada who was a 21 dealer took the broken shaft out of the trash agter bobby lost the last night, he kept it and called it the "million dollar shaft" theter was a black boar cue there JR Davis had it but he passed away from a heart attack, i cant remember if it was before or after the match, to the best of my recollection bobby bought a cue off the rail to play with-the one John had the shaft from, But as far as archie I cant remember what he used, I'm not gonna make up a story but if I had to guess it was a 2 piece house cue, again its a guess, I will ask around now that i'm back in the loop a little in Vegas and see what I can come up with, give me some time, i'm curious now too. I just dont remeber Archie having a cue, I was in LA when they played at the Rumrunner, I went out of town for a few days there was no notice of that match or I would have stayed in town, I saw Archie a few days before it went down and was back in town right afterwards, and then Archie was mostly at the Horse Shoe down town, by the time he played Toby I had moved to LA and dont know alot about that, I was there when he was winning. I didnt see the down fall. I'll trasck down John Canada and find out about the shaft bobby had. sorry I dont have more info, i dont fill in the blanks with storys only what I know for a fact.

gotta catch a plane see everyone on nov 4th. Jay get ready!!!!;) :D

I saw the Side-Pocket Kid play a guy that carried his cue around in a guitar case a race to 5 for $80k. The Kid's backer was a millionare so 80k wasnt anything to him, if they lost, he'd just get another 80k. It happened....i swear.:D

The biggest bet I had ever eyewitnessed was for a thousand per game in 1989. :p

Some "unknowns" wandered in the pool room that I was working in during graveyard shift (Champion's in Silver Spring for the local readers). All "regulars" couldn't help but take notice of what was going on with these strangers. They were all drooling when the bennies were being passed back and forth, and everybody quit playing, just wanting to watch these four guys. They couldn't play a lick either. :D

One by one, the regulars each tried to get in the ring game, but these guys weren't going for it. It was their little private game, and they weren't very discrete about passing the money back and forth either.

A couple days later, there was a front-page article in The Washington Post about the Rayful Edmond gang being arrested under RICA. When we saw the pictures of the guys in the paper, we all realized the four strangers that night were Rayful Edmond, et al.

I'm always looking up name spellings because of my job, and when I just went to look up "Rayful Edmond" for this thread, I discovered he's got his own article in Wikipedia. GEESH! :o

Here's a snippet:

At his peak, Edmond was alleged to have sold over 2,000 kilos of cocaine a week, worth tens of millions of dollars, in the Washington, D.C. area. Edmond controlled as much as 70% of the D.C. drug trade in the late 1980s. He was known to have spent some $457,619 in an exclusive Georgetown store (Linea Pitti, specializing in Italian men's clothing) owned by Charles Wynn who was later convicted on 34 counts of money laundering. Georgetown University basketball coach John Thompson personally requested that Edmond cease all contacts with his players, including Alonzo Mourning.

Edmond was arrested in 1989 at the age of 24. His arrest and subsequent trial were widely covered by local and national media. Judicial officials, fearful of reprisals from members of Edmond's gang, imposed unprecedented security during the trial. Jurors' identities were kept secret before, during, and after trial, and their seating area was enclosed in bulletproof glass. Edmond was jailed at the maximum security facility at Marine Corps Base Quantico in Virginia and flown to the Federal Court House in Washington, D.C. by helicopter each day for his trial. Authorities took this unusual step due to heightened fears of an armed escape attempt. This gang was believed to have committed over 40 murders including the attempted murder of a local pastor, the Reverend Mr. Bynum, who was shot 12 times during an anti-drug march in his Orleans place neighborhood. Edmond was eventually sentenced to life in prison.

The largest best I ever heard of occurred between Keith McCready, Rosey from Detroit, Grady Mathews, and Harry Platis in Vegas. Grady will get mad if I post the amount, but let's just say it was six figures. ;)

Sounds good, but you should really only count what you collected on. No one claims owesies on taxes.

Just kidding. BTW thank you for Banking with the Beard. I don't know if I could have banked to the end rail if it wasn't for your book.

I have seen Tony Watson play 30large a set....

I busted Archie before

I busted Archie at Flyboy's place in Baton Rouge and he asked me if I would be interested in a seven figure set which I agreed to but he couldn't come up with the money. I haven't touched a cuestick in over three months, I'm 62 years old,and I'll still play him a set for a million provided the money is posted beforehand with a weeks notice.

Here we go again

This story should get interesting. Could you please go over it one more time

I once asked a local bookie what is the most he's ever played for. "Way up into the thousands on pool and ballgames. The most? I was the only white guy in a poolroom in Brooklyn. I was playing $40 a game eightball. I was down $80, which I somehow got his attention away from paying, and playing on the third game on air. I had $26 bucks. He scratched on the eight and I stuck him for $400."
