"The Checks are in the mail." Oh Dear...

Danny called me today and told me that all of the winnings were going to be mailed to players instead of handed out today. Danny's heart was not the only one to sink to his stomach.

He said there were many players that got eliminated early stayed the whole week for the sole reason of getting paid in person. This could put alot of the players on a bind that were counting on these winnings to pay their weekly expenses.

He also mentioned something to me about Thorsten's Vegas check being mailed to Germany instead of his home in Florida. He didn't go in to much detail about that.

This is unsettling news. All everyone can do is hope for the best I guess.

PS this info was received aroun 1PM CDT. I have not received a call notifying me anything changed.

I bet Mark Trainor is dancing like a chicken on a hot tin roof.
 
This is soooooooo inexcusable. Players, most of them broke, came from around the world to play in this. Now they are going home with a hope and a prayer if they can get up the airfare? Given pool's history and the Import Kevin, in his own words placed on paying players immediately, how can they now do this?
 
What was the excuse for not paying the players.
I thought that was one of the guarantees of this tour, to pay the players at the tournament.

Are they going to use the old I forgot to bring my checkbook excuse.
 
In all seriousness, I believe today is the 10 year anniversary of Don Mackey announcing at an event that he had "forgotten his check book" and the players would have to wait for checks to arrive in the mail.

Oh come on now... You guys really didn't think the IPT was gonna last? I'm not saying this is the end.. But "when" it does end, it will probably be something dramatic like this that happens.

HUH??I dont want my wallet to be stolen or lost but when i go out to dinner, I take the risk and bring it along. I find the restaurants are much happier to see me then and actually serve me dinner too.

Boy i hope they (IPT) are just lame and no more.

The same thing happened at the NA open in Vegas. All the players as far as I know received their checks within a week or so after the event.

Why is it so hard for some to understand that the IPT is a BUSINESS. Essentially, they have a couple of hundred employees who need to be paid, yet nobody know how much the check will be until the very last minute when the players are eliminated. Payroll processing is a function of any business. Pay needs to be calculated for each employee, taxes and various deductions need to be calculated, or if the employees are "contractors", other information needs to be recorded. Then the checks need to be printed and signed before distribution. I wouldn't be surprised if the entire payroll process takes 2 or 3 full days to be completed.

Everyone got paid from the last tournament, and I see no reason to believe they won't be paid for this one. I do not see how this can be considered to be the beginning of the end for the IPT. If the checks don't get mailed out, or if they start bouncing, that would be the time to be concerned. I am still amazed at how many people keep looking for something bad to happen to the IPT. It looks to me like it is the best thing to happen to professional pool in my lifetime. I'm sure Efren won't mind waiting a few days for his half million!

The voice of reason ... lol Exactly, to have a professional tour with all the bells and whistles included takes much planning, organization, and yes a few time delays because it is a business, and not some off the cuff operation. I was the highest Payroll manager for a muti-company multi-locations company with over 5,500 employees at the time, so I am familiar with all the facets of Payroll, and what is required and the time it takes to complete those tasks.

I don't expect the 'Voices of Doom' to ever go away, no matter how many years the IPT might exist. Kind of reminds me about the father who tells their child that they will never amount to anything.

Most employees pick up their checks on Friday, or every other Friday. That is consistent and everyone lives with it.
If suddenly, you were told that the checks weren't there on Friday and they were going to be mailed, wouldn't you be concerned.

Nobody wants anything bad to hapen to the IPT. There are certain issues within their system that need fine tuning and over time I am sure they will address these issues. At the moment, KT & Company are realizing that the original model for the IPT has some cracks in it. That is normal with any business. Many reasonable and prudent individuals understand that.

Now for the problem that I have with this...

IF paying the players was planned to be through a mailed check, why (as a courtesy) didn't Deno or Kevin address this at the players meeting, or prior to the tournament? As a player, I know that you're going to rely on your winnings on the way out of the tournament. That's life. At most tournaments I have been to, players are paid as they are eliminated IF they are in the money. I know that some players stayed until the end of the event because they wanted their check. At $110 a night to stay at that venue, it adds up. Some players have already earned big bucks so its not a problem. However, there are qualifiers and others that spent their last die just to get there with the hope that upon leaving they would have money to pay their way back. What about them? That's the reality of this situation that Nostroke has already pointed out.

I believe that eventually everybody will get paid. Kevin has said that all IPT prize money is guaranteed through a national accounting firm. I don't recall him saying which one, but I do believe him. I also believe that if that is the case, then there is no excuse for this at all. The accounting firm could have prepared the checks during the tournament. If you want everybody to stay until the end, then pay them. If not, be upfront about it. I don't think that is asking too much.

Especially considering that they changed the payout structure early last week, I would be more surprised if they DID get all the checks out on the day of the finals. Payroll definitely takes time. I get paid every other Friday, and my paycheck represents a pay period that ended 7 days before I get my money. I don't mind that week of turn-around time, it's just a fact of life.

So saying one thing and doing another thing is expected and totally kosher with some of you. If i ever start a boiler room operation, I know who to look up. Afterall it's a BUSINESS!

Keep 200 people on a string all week long-then say "go back to China, borrow money from Mark Trainor- Wait for your check in China-Hopefully we get the address right".

People should keep their word, period!

At the NA Open, it was reported that KT announced some change in when/how players would be paid - I forget exactly what it was, either that they'd get paid at the end of the event, or checks would be mailed after the event. Anyone recall exactly? Linda (who was there) maybe?

So I wonder, was any sort of similar announcement made at the World Open player's meeting? Again, Linda? :D

From your lips/keyboard to my ear, lol. All I remember is that the players expected to be paid on Sunday. The full players meeting can be downloaded now from the IPT site, so you can check. I think they said if we weren't going to stay, then we could appoint someone to pick them up for us.

It could be that all the extra headaches of those graduated payments knocked everyone for a loop. I am giving them the benefit of the doubt. :)

NOPE Nostroke, it is called lying, plain and simple. KT is and has been a professional lier for a long time. People who want their loved ones and friends to earn a decent income playing pool are totally in denial. It is like saying it depends on what the meaning of is is!! I do not wish to burst any bubbles. This whole IPT thing is making one Philipino very happy. I wonder what they will think when the same 5 players keep winning all their money. The betting line won't be so attractive anymore. You get them all there at the same time and the cream will always rise to the top. There is no way to reason with them. Blackjack proved that several times.
