The cue you WONT let go...

I have to admit... My cheap Madison Bob sneaky. Cocobolo with black but cap with simple gold ring. Brown phenolic joint with same gold ring. Personalized to myself. Broke the shaft and Bob stopped making cues. Havent hit with in a decade or more. Best hitting cue ive ever felt. I miss it like my first dog.
I have three cues with sentimental value that would make them be the last to go if I ever got rid of some.
1. An A. E. Schmidt Titlist conversion that I bought new in 1973. First cue I ever paid more than $100 for.
2. The McDermott C-14 that I bought new when the D models came out in 1985. It played so good, I sold my cue that Richard Black made for me in 1981.
3. The 1950's Titlist that Mike Pancerny converted and customized for me a couple years ago. This is my current playing cue.
4. I know I said three, but I'll add another. The RS-11 McDermott that C. J. Wiley used to play in and win the Million Dollar Challenge Tournament in 1996. The tournament where Earl ran 11 racks in a row to win the million dollar bonus. The final was Earl and C. J. This cue doesn't have any sentimental value to me, but it has a 100% professional tournament winning record. It was used for that tournament only and then C. J. went back to his Blud. If you ever watch the match, it is the cue he is waving around to the McDermott people in the crowd after he wins the semi-final and the final. McDermott was a sponsor for him and the tournament and that was the TV cue and they later came out with a C. J. Wiley line.

My Kikel Custom.
After I got my first decent tournament payout, $450 way back in 1997, I dropped the whole roll as a down payment on this beauty. It's no longer my daily player but it will always hold its spot.

Any cue that I used as my main player will be kept.
How old in your "oldest main player" and how often do you change playing cues?
My first oldest main player was one I bought in 1973. It is 43 years old (maybe the blank is older...it is a Titlist blank).
My current main player is around 60 years old (1950s Titlist blank), but the conversion was only a couple years ago.

My dad's McDermott D4, and my D19. Sentimental value. The D19 was my main player until a few days ago. I still have my first cue...a crappy Cue Ball Kelly. I'll probably hang on to that just because it's not worth anything. I also have some OLD thing that I can't identify. It was a gift from one of my father's co-workers many years ago. Again, I don't think it's worth anything so I'm pretty much stuck with it.
My Schrager that was made for me in 1991. I used to do inlays for Bert in the late 70's and became very close to him and Pat, It's 57" so I had Ernie Martinez recently make a 2" extension at the joint. Even though it's not my everyday player, it will not be sold.

Well let me start off by saying, the cue I have Leon Sly making me now I will never sell. This is the 1st cue i've had made that is 99% all my ideas. The only help I needed from Leon was the ring work design. If you don't know about Leon, you really need to check him out. His cues keep getting better and better and more beautiful in design and looks.
As far as something I own now, there is 2 that I won't let go unless in dire need. A little back story is, I met Paul Fanelli many years ago and in a 3 year period I had Paul make me 2 cues. Hurt my back really bad and needed surgery and all, stopped playing and ended up selling my cue collection to pursue another hobby. Figured if I ever got to play again(which I didn't think was going to happen) i'd be able to have Paul make me more cues. Obviously, he passed way too soon and I didn't get back into pool until a few years after he passed.
So I was so upset at myself for selling his cues, not only for their playability and looks, but because of the friendship I had with Paul. He was great to go visit and just hang out with in his shop. It was great, so much to chat about and look at as his shop had so much too look at.
I managed to purchase one of his earlier cues from someone on ebay. Then I picked up a butterfly from Grant on here and told myself I wouldn't want to sell these ever.

#1. A Palmer model M from the 2nd catalog a friend pleaded with me to buy because he could get a great deal if he bought two. Can't sell it because it has my name in the foil. Played with it a few years, then got too busy with a small biz, raising a daughter, etc. so it just sat in a closet for decades. When I started playing again, I couldn't quite believe the attention it got.
#2. A 2007 Josey, kind of a titlist style with 4 needle sharp points and 3 veneers. It's my current playing cue. It's hit is so perfect for my taste that I stopped looking at cues. Hopefully I'll enjoy it for years to come.

I have two that will I will part with when I die. Not before no matter what. Both cues I made in Pete Cherriers' shop. They represent good times spent learning and laughing. Both created with care, and my hands. Since I am not a cue maker, all credit still goes to my buddy Pete. Under his good graces these cues came to be. I will never let them go. Matt D.
