Love him or hate him, pool needs a bit of livening-up- the new crop of Asian (mostly Taiwanese) players are amazing, but they have NO personality (for the most part)- watching this year's Guinness 9-Ball Tour is like being on valium for two hours (these days I generally leave it on the the background while a shoot racks in my home)- with Earl, there's always that electric undercurrent running through his matches- I don't play while Earl in on (WPC or whatever)- I pay attention.

as I told alot of my friends before. if we had in pool 4 or 5 guys that are just like Ear's type, we would've get a bigger pool community and fans, and our sport woulda grown as big as the sport of snooker or tennis, Thats just my opinion, I'm not gonna name anybody from tennis or snooker, but we know some old crazy people in snooker and tennis who were actually really good at that sport & does some crazy things from time to time, then it raises their sport.
I wish we had some players just like Earl, as I said, we would have bigger community
but thats just my opinion.

You are totally right. When Earl pumped his fist and yelled when he made that bank he was fired up and it fires up the crowd. The problem with pool is that it's been deemed a "gentleman's game" and therefore you shouldn't get excited because that will be inappropriate or look like you are rubbing it in your opponent's face.
Now that speed pool player with red hair goes nuts and so does Tom Rossman and Mike Massey and look at what makes it onto TV. Trick shots and speed pool. Those guys are smart enough to know how to make sure they keep making $$$
I read John Mcenroe's book and he explained that they could of put an end to his on court antics but they let him keep doing it because it was selling so many tickets.
This is so true and such a good point. Coming especially from England where snooker is the main cue sport - the 'gentlemanly' aspect of the game is taken too far imo. I mean i watched a clip earlier of alex pagulayan jumping about dancing when he got a lucky roll - i also remember at the derby city match shane vs alex - shane was really under some intense heat at the time because alex had come back to make it hill hill. anyway alex got a bad roll and shane raised his arms up in the air in celebration at alex's misfortune and relief. It was great! pool especially is such a mentally exhausting and exhillarating game I like to see players let it all out.
This whole notion of being a 'gentleman' seems to be exclusive to pool and i don't really understand why. Ask any average sports fan in england if they thought cheering a miss is an ok thing to do in snooker/pool and they will most likely say definitely not. Yet these same people will celebrate to high heaven at a football match if an own goal is scored. Or if an opposing player is clobbered down and injured.
It's just interesting that billiards seems to have made this image for itself of being a 'gentleman's game'.

I only know of Earl playing 9ball and 8ball. I've gotta imagine that he's quite proficient in other games. Any other pool games that he plays or had gambled when he traveled around? I know that he was kicking butt right out of the gate.. or out of the barn I should say. Would love to know more about his playing history. I bet he has a lot of great stories to tell.

I didn't think that was the real Earl Strickland in the chat room. I don't know if TAR has any way to verify but I thought it was somebody pretending.
It would be cool if it was him to see him online but would also be cool if it wasnt so he wasnt subjected to people knocking him.Rubyron said:
