The first cue you really wanted... but couldn't afford

I don't know if this is true but I think that at one point in all of
our (cue collector) lives, we were not cue collectors and we
maybe even thought it was a little crazy to spend over a few
hundred bucks on a "pool stick".

What was the first you ever wanted, but could not afford at
the time or could not justify the expense?

I never did acquire my first "dream cue", it was the Viking G81

I think it was 2007 or 2008 and I hadn't even played league yet
It was $800 or something like that, which was inconceivable!

Still a sweet cue to look at but as they say "things change"

When I first started going to Kelly Kue (East Detroit) in 1969, I had a $9.00 Sears cue with ramin wood shaft. About 6 months later I upgraded to a rosewood merry widow National Tournament cue for $32.50 (purchased at Q Masters in Berkley, MI) which was all I could afford. There were a few $65.00 and $80.00 Palmer cues I used to stare at in the showcase at the poolroom. A few of the better players in the room at Eddie Laube cues. I wanted to have one but at $150.00 and $250.00 they were way out of my range. Martin

1986, I bought a Kersenbrock for $375 from Jhon Wright when we both worked at The Board of Trade in Chicago.. It was an ebony cue with Rosewood points and a single green veneer... I settled for that cue because I couldn't afford what I really wanted.. the fancy Ebony, Cocobolo, and Ivory "duality" cue he had.. It was $625..

When first starting out with pool few years ago I always wanted one of the lim meucci gamblers/joker cues but never wanted too spend 800+ for it then soon found out I hated the way meucci played after using one so glad I didn't get one 2nd cue I wanted really really bad but couldn't buy seen it on here was bocote South West thing was gorgeous

An Omega with bacote windows I was able to hit a few balls with in a shop in Glendale, California in '95. Best feeling cue I'd hit with at that point. Couldn't really afford the $800-something they were asking for back then.

At a BCA Trade Show many years ago - South West made of ebony and pink ivory wood,, with ivory inlays,,, the contrasting colors made that cue stand out.

When Bob Runde built my Schon, for what I paid, I could have ordered a custom cue from several other cue-makers which included Tim Scruggs,
Bill Stroud, Verl Horn, Black Boar or Tad Kohara. I most regret not ordering the TAD cue but his waiting period was a little too long for me back in 1985.
Bob Runde was just the nicest cue-maker I met while attending the Inaugural BCA Trade Show held in FT. Worth....so Bob was my choice as a cue-maker.
In hindsight, sure wish I exercised a lot more patience in my selection process and I now regret not ordering a cue from Tad Kohara back in 1985.

The Joel Hercek I ordered in 2006 that I have no idea when it will get done.
I might be dead before it gets done, and then I really won't be able to afford it

I don't think Tony was making cues in 1985... Don't think he really he was "orderable" till much later than that. 89 ish maybe... Could be off on that...You must be thinking of someone else... I would say I would have ordered the TAD as well but I also had Bob make me a cue back then as well... Who da thunk it..

Heubler US OPEN cue.

One of my very favorite cues I have lusted over for years. I could always afford, but never pulled the trigger.

Hardly ever see them anymore.

I think Danny Harriman had one, but sold it, but see them less and less.

Just thought of another one.

I took some lessons from "Cool Cat" Martin. He recommended I order a cue from some unknown cuemaker. He said he thought he was excellent and would be a top maker someday.
(Randy Mobley). Again, not because of money, but because I had never heard of the guy, and EVERYBODYS local cue maker is touted as the next top maker. I just didn't take the good advice.

I ordered mine in 2004. Joel has returned every single email I have sent him. Last I heard, he was working on the 2003 orders. He told me that his customers are getting more complex designs, so the batches are taking longer that he originally predicted (6 years was the original projected wait time).

Probably a couple of more years, but worth the wait.

The first one I remember is still a cue I want, but is no longer available,at least not in the quality I'd expect for a cue in that price range.

A classic Meucci JR-7,also known as the Crown Jewels replica. Tommy D.

I got on Joel's list in 2006. So hopefully I will get to actually order the cue in 2016. How long does it usually take from there?

Steve's Tangiers cue...but I don't even think it is for sale lol...if it was I couldn't afford it for sure.

Hell of a cue. Nobody could blame you on that.

If you ever don't want that spot on the list I'll buy it from ya

Joel told me he isn't taking more names so buying a spot is about all I can do.
