The History of TAR

With the turning of the new year I was feeling a little nostalgic and decided to take action on something Watchez mentioned. He mentioned in a post that we should make a time line of events since we started.

This is a version of that. I apologize for the length but as I sat down to write this I found I couldn't stop.

I went back and found most of the event flyers and some graphics for special events and decided to put them in chronological order. This covers most of what TAR has done since our first event in July of

2007. I have to say that I was a little surprised. Time fly's when you are having fun.

None of these events would have possible without the support of the players and fans. To all of you we say a very heartfelt thank you.

So here it is: The History Of TAR.

Our first event. Shooters $3000 Ring Game Tournament. This was the first time I or anyone else had held or turned on a prosumer camera. We literally unpacked the gear right from B&H Photo at Shooters. It was a great place to start. Dan Tull and the whole crew at Shooters in Olathe ,KS. have been very good to us right from the beginning. It was here that we got a glimpse of what Live Streaming could be. 5 days on the road.

3157376797_1d29e735b8_o.png

The Action Challenge. Our first event that we produced and promoted ourselves. Both players were great to work with and took a chance on an unproven idea. Thanks to Mark Griffin putting up $2000 we were able to fly in two ledgends and the best commentators in the world to call the match. Mr. Grady Mathews and Mr. Billy Incardona. Both gentlemen were very gracious and professional and a true joy to work with. They and the players took a chance on us and we will be forever greatful to them. This event was when we started our relationship with Diamond Billiard Products. It was one we went after from the beginning because we wanted the best players playing on the best equipment. Greg Sullivan made it happen and it was the begining of a great relationship.

The Qlymipics. This was another major event for event for us. We had two major matches on back to back weekends. The first was The Action All Around featuring Danny Harriman vs John Schmidt. It was an epic match. This match was where we met James Doran owner of Side Pockets in Kansas City, Mo. It was a relationship that would prove to be important in our future. The other match was a battle of old school vs new school. The Action Challenge 2 featured Shane Van Boening vs Earl Strickland. What can you say about Earl other than he is one of the true giants of the game. Mike Gulyassy sponsored Earl in this match. It was the first time we had met Mike and he is a true gentleman and professional. As a side note this was a long trip for us. About 20 days if I remember right. Mark Griffin had the vision to see what we trying to do and once again thanks to his support we were able to help make something special happen. This is where the Legend of "The Sleeve" was born.

I was lucky to sit down with the 2007 Player of the Year Shane Van Boening in his home room, Lucky's in Sioux Falls, SD., in December for an in depth interview. Shane is a friend of mine and it was a pleasure to hear him discuss the amazing year he had in 2007. SVB is , in my opinion, the leader of the next generation of professional pool players in the United States. I think we have much to look forward to.

3158207470_a776ea5655_o.jpg

The 2008 Derby City Classic. The daddy of them the all. The best pool event in my lifetime. Thanks to Greg Sullivan we were able to set up in the legendary Action Room and stream all of the beautiful chaos that is the DCC action room. We saw some amazing things. I personally had the time of my life. It was there that we witnessed the beginning of what I think will be a rivalry that will go down in history. Alex Pagulayan vs Shane Van Boening. Only one of scheduled matches went off, Sarah vs Monica and they were a pleasure to work with. Thank you ladies. Thanks to all of the people we had help us with the broadcast were able to run almost 24/7. Our numbers on Ustream actually shocked me when I looked at them when it was all over. 512,818 total views, 72,000+ Unique views over the course of the event. About 11 days on the road for this one. We will be back this year January 23rd to do it again.

3157375931_7cbdc5a6b3_o.jpg

The 2008 United States Bar Table Championships at the Sands in Reno, NV. Another great event for us and one where we learned a lot about our trade. The thing that sticks out in my mind about this one is the bill for the internet access. A cool $2000 for seven days. In the end it was worth it. About 10 days on the road for this one. We will be back again this year Febuary 23rd.

3157376109_dbbdc3943a_o.jpg

The Young Guns Challenge. John Morra vs Justin Bergman. We were back at Shooters for what many considered a match that would answer the question: Tournament player or Action player? It was here that we got to know and work with Watchez and it has proven to be a good friendship ever since. Both of these young players never ceased to impress us with their professionalism and conduct. We will see much more from these two great young players in the future. Around a 6 day trip here I think.

3158208742_45cfca51b1_o.jpg

The Action All Around 2. Danny Harriman vs John Schmidt. This was our first match at Side Pockets in Kansas City, Mo. Thanks to James "Duff" Doran who welcomed us with open arms and made us feel right at home. This match was epic. Four 100 ball runs in the straight pool and hil hill in the one pocket. Add in some bad blood and it is one people are still talking about. Ken Shuman and Fred Agnir flew in on their own dime to do the commentary and did a great job. I really hope that before it is over we will see a third and final match with these two American Champions. 5 days on the road here I think.

The OB Cues TARPIT at the 2008 BCAPL 8 Ball National Championships at the Riviera Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, NV. This was our biggest event on the biggest stage in American pool. We had two major matches on tap. One would turn out to be the best I have ever seen. First up was another first for TAR, Bar Table action. This match featured Scott Frost vs Darren Appleton in a three game all around on the small table. The broadcast of this match was plagued with problems that took us many hours and untold years off our lives to track down. The problem? Static electricity is the only thing we could come up with. It would build up in the room and if anyone touched any metal surface anywhere near our gear it would short the firewire switcher. Now maybe this is not what caused it but when we rearranged our entire set up we were able to continue without a hitch. I still wake up screaming when I think about that. :D This was our first event sponsored by OB Cues and they were great to us. Royce, John and Jessica as well as the whole OB crew are great people who support the game in many different ways. Our second action match I will cover below. All together we were out about 13 days for this one.

3158208798_c3ab593df4_o.jpg

The Action Challenge 3. The most amazing match I have ever witnessed in my life. Thats all I am going to say about that.

3158207522_b3ca251722_o.jpg

As a bonus for us we had the first ever live streamed internet grudge match between CubC and OMGWTF. If you are reading this you know what I am talking about. Both players deserve much respect for posting up and playing in front of everyone. It was a lot of fun to sweat.

3158208534_239dec55da_o.jpg

TEAM TAR. We were happy to ship these four young men some gear to wear at he US Junior Nationals. Tanner is an old TAR Road Dawg and his team had a great showing. Another example of some of the good solid young kids that are the future of pool in the U.S.

3157376265_b4fe925d3c_o.jpg

The Best In The West. Corey Harper produced this qualifier for the Hopkins Million Dollar Shootout and asked us if we wanted to come out and cover it. I flew out with a light load of gear and had a great time covering some the West Coast's best players in action. 5 days out for this one.

3158208472_c4252d053f_o.jpg

While I was in LA I had the chance to sit down and talk to a Legend in the cue making industry. Mr Ernie Gutierrez of Ginacue. Keone Young set this up and for that I will be forever in his debt. It was one of the best experciences I have had since being involved with TAR. Ernie is a true genius and a great guy.

3158636100_7cfd4b4d4d_o.jpg

Side Pockets Showdown. This event featured two matches. The first was Chris Bartram vs Mike Dechaine. There was external static around this match but it did end up going off. Another exapmle that when something goes wrong you should turn it into a positive by learning why things did not go as planned and learning from the situation. We learned a lot on this trip. This was the first time we had worked with Chris Bartram and it would prove to be the beginnig of a friendship that we still enjoy to this day. The second match featured Jason Kirkwood vs John Schmidt. This was a solid match and John showed why he is one of the most capable players in the world. I personaly hope to see Jason in action with TAR many more times in the future. We were back at Side Pockets again it was quickly starting to feel like home. 7 days for this one.

Allen Hopkins Million Dollar Shoot Out. This was our first time working with Allen and it was a real honor and pleasure. I cant seem to find the flyer for this event but I did find the flyer for something that happened at the event. Jack Justis was very kind to us and donated one of his magnificent custom cases to us to do with as we pleased. Chad and I did not want to have work out a custody arrangement for the case so we decided we better just give it away. :D What really happened is that we figured this would be a great way to give something back to our customers and we held a give away and pulled the lucky winners number at the Hopkins event. It was a great trip. Special thanks to Jack and Allen Hopkins for believing in a couple of guys neither of them really knew. It meant a lot to both Chad and I. About 8 days out for this one.

3158489658_69b45b7201_o.jpg

Chris Bartram vs Stevie Moore at Side Pockets in KC,MO. Stevie Moore came out and showed that not only is his reputation as one of the nicest guys in the game well deserved but he is capable of playing at the highest level as well. On the second day of this match Stevie played amazing 10 ball to open a lead that Chris just could not overcome. This match is the perfect example of what TAR is about. Two great players playing for serious stakes in a gentlemanly way. I am sure we will see more from both of these players in the future. 5 days for this one.

3158208688_9774818d2f_o.jpg

2008 International Cue Collectors Show. Kansas City, MO. Thanks to Mr. Bill Stroud of Josswest Cues and Mr. Will Prout I was able to cover the best cue show on earth. I had a fantastic time and was impressed with how very friendly and genuinely warm everyone was. I was fortunate to meet some of the greats in the cue making and collecting world. I even got some of them on tape :D 4 days here.

3158207860_fc8d9301aa_o.jpg

The 2008 US Open 9 Ball Championships Action from Q-Master Billiards. Barry Berhman asked us to come out to Virgina to cover the action at his pool room during the Open. We saw some great action and had a good time. Financially this trip was our worst by far and we learned some hard lessons here. It is all part of the journey and if it wasn't for our friends at OB Cues for their help in sponsoring us we would have been in bad shape after this one. Lesson learned: Sometimes the hard reality of business must trump enthusiasm. 9 days out for this one.

3158208354_4cfa02240a_o.jpg

The WPBA Championship at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, FL. The WPBA approached us and asked if we would be interested in trying out live streaming of one of their events. I went down to Florida and with an amazing amount of help from Kristy Carter and the other ladies of the WPBA we put on a great broadcast that showed just how enthusiastic and professional the women are at their events. It was a great time and I hope we can do more with the WPBA in the future. The flyer here is one that didnt make release due to a few reasons but I happen to like it so here it is. :D Gone for 5 days on this one.

3157376441_d6984dd8b3_o.jpg

Tony Chohan vs Gabe Owen. The One Pocket Challenge. We were very excited to head back to Shooters for a match between two of the best One Pocket players on earth. As a special bonus we had a couple of great
players and road men in the booth calling the action, Scott Frost and Ronnie Wiseman. This was a another great match that I hope to see a rematch of before its over.

3046395617_1b99d44436_o.jpg

The 2008 Shooters $3000 a man ring game tournament. Back where we started from. Once again some of the best bar table players in the world came to Shooters and a surprise winner came out of the pack. Justin Bergman took down the $20,000+ first place and showed the world just how strong he is. I think this is one of the most exciting formats in pool and look forward to many years of great pool at Shooters.Total of 10 days gone for this one.

I think that is pretty much it.

Eighteen months. Twenty one events.

We covered nine events that other people produced. We produced and promoted twelve of our own events. Sometimes the events coincided and made it a little easier.

Here are some numbers:

Total days on the road: 123

Total money at stake in TAR produced events: $208,000

Total miles Chad drove the TAR Bus to and from events: 19,558

Total hours behind the wheel (with some help from Lunchmeat): 302 hours

Total number of original DVD's produced for sale: 12 (I know, I know....Get 'Em Done !!)

Total number of announce booths built/destroyed: 4

Total number of rolls of Gorilla Tape used: 45 (low estimate)

Total number of Diet Cokes Chad has drank: 385,123 (Sarah Rousey did drink 6 of those though)

Total orders of Side Pockets cobbler Justin ate: 26

It has been a wonderful eighteen months. There are some people I personally want to thank for making it possible for us to undertake this amazing journey:

First and foremost is my business partner and friend Chad Pollman. Without his hard work, ideas, spirit and enthusiasm TAR would have never happened. Thanks big man, it has been a hell of a ride and I cant wait to see where we end up next.

Two people who were critical to TAR going from a small website to a business able to produce and stream real events with the best players in the world are Chuck Moss and Jason Froehling. Chuck was the guy who saw what could be and put his money behind two guys with an idea. Without him I don't think we would be here. Jason Froehling is the guy who believed that Live Streaming was going to be the big thing. I said in the beginning "We can just tape it." I was wrong. Jason taught me more than anyone and was always there when we got stuck on something to help however he could. I feel fortunate to have met and worked with both of these fine men.

Mark Griffin has been there to support us and help however he could from the beginning. I think he is one of the most positive forces in pool and I feel very fortunate to call him my friend.

Greg Sullivan has been in from the start as well doing what he could to get us into events and getting those world class Diamond tables to wherever we called and asked him to send one. Another man I am fortunate to know and call a friend.

I guess one of the biggest reasons TAR even exists is because of this place. Without AZ Billiards forums I know for a fact there would be no TAR. Chad and I both want to thank Mike Howerton and Jerry Forsythe for all they do for the whole pool world and for us by creating and maintaining this amazing place.

A group of people who really went above and beyond in their support of TAR is the cue makers. All of these guys have given examples of their hard work to us to help generate some money to keep going down the road:

Bryan and Reuben Fisher of Fisher Custom Cues
Eric Crisp of Sugartree Cues
Steve Klapp of Klapp Custom Cues
Andy Gilbert of Gilbert Custom Cues

Someone here on AZ who has been good to us is Eric "Fatboy" Peterson. Eric is passionate about the game and his energy and enthusiasm for the future is something that we appreciate.

The people who have done the absolute most for us is the customers and fans of the game. You guys make it possible and for that we thank you with all of our heart.

The players are who it is all about. Without them we have nothing. We have been very fortunate to work with some great guys who believe in what we are trying to do. Thank you to all of the players who have worked with us. Your talent and skill are what it is all about and if we have anything to say about it you will be better rewarded for those abilities in the future.

There are so many people who make what we do possible and I appreciate every one of them. I would list them all but I could type for pages and pages. Thank you all.

Looking back it has been an amazing trip. I can not wait to see what the next year brings.

See you on the road.

Hey guys. Great work, and keep it coming. This is(to me anyways) the only natural progression for pool for the next few years. Serious players don't always like to watch tournament pool, but everybody likes to watch high dollar "challenge" matches:p . Thanks again, and keep it up.

Sincerest Thanks!

So here it is: The History Of TAR.

Justin and Chad:

This recap shows that 2007-8 has been for you both singularly the wildest road trip of the billiards world of the past 18 months.

The both of you have contributed in a meaningful way to the advancement of pool enjoyment by untold thousands across the entire world, and I personally wish to take a moment to thank you for all your hard work and perseverance that has brought you the successes this far.

I know it has not been easy. I have seen both of you "in action" at many of the events you recapped. Long hours just getting "there". The technical struggles, the logistics, the building of relationships, the customer service and the delivery of a quality product that is really, really appreciated.

Have a great 2009! And keep`em comin`!

Will Prout

This reminds me of something Leonard Bludworth once told me about how he got started. He asked Janice to accompany him to a tournament where they only planned to be gone two weeks or so. They came home 18 months later.

You all have produced an amazing body of work in a short time. I have enjoyed every second of your broadcasts that I could get. You are on the cutting edge of live broadcasting on the net.

I sincerely hope that you succeed beyond your wildest expectations! Thanks for some KILLER POOL this past year and a half!

Hope you guys continue growing. You have are filling a unique niche within the market. I love the challenge match format.

Will the Van Boening vs. Strickland match ever be available? I wouldn't mind getting it if only to complete the action challenge set.

It's worth mentioning that the DVD's you guys produced have provided viewers documented footage of some of the greatest performances ever. I will never forget (partly because I have the DVD) Shane's barrage in his match with Corey Deuel. The 4th dvd in that set contains the best play I have seen.

Thanks Justin and Chad for everything you guys do! It is a pleasure getting to see what you do. It is also a pleasure getting to know you guys!!

It is great that pool is getting some more exposure world wide with the help of The Action Report! I also really enjoyed getting to know you guys also!!

Thanks!

This is nice. Thanks Justin for taking the time to put this together, and you are right, hard to believe all this went down in a year. You guys do an excellent job and its nice to see people doing what they love. Happy New Year to TAR!

Wishing you and Chad a great 2009. I love what you guys do and hope it keeps getting better and better.

.....those banners you had in Vegas were awesome.

Thanks Justin, nicely done. I too love challenge matches much better then what is presented on TV. TV, in the interest of saving time/speeding things up, have caused our sport to change quite a bit. TAR is leading the "live stream way" and, possibly, may start a trend toward regaining what once was... who knows. Maybe I should just stop trying to live in the past.

Nice post - Rep!

this is about ready for a wikipedia page. i don't know how to do it, but someone should.

M.C.
I can do the wiki page with the content you have posted so far. let me know.

You know Mr Hoppe is a big TAR supporter, and I wish you guys an even crazier year in 2009. You guys are helping to shape the future of pool in a positive way, thank you.
Mr H

Very well done guys. I managed to catch up with you at the DCC last year. Its as much fun watching you make the broadcasts as it is watching them.

Keep it up & good luck.
.

I've organized a couple of video'd events so I have some idea of how hard you guys must have worked to get 21 events off the ground, from all around the country in just 18 months. Well done Justin and all those who helped get this concept to where it is.

I wonder a bit why it has taken off now after BCN did this for a couple of years or so and couldn't get the same level of community excitement and support. I certainly enjoyed their DCC coverage in years gone by.

Perhaps it was a combination of cost of production, better streaming these days, the challenge formats or something else. Would like to know what others think the cause is.

Whatever the case, TAR is a significant advancement for pool and I think it will develop into something that will revolutionize the dynamics between pool produced for television v the internet.
