Mick Garry of the Sioux Falls Argus Leader wrote an article about Shane Van Boening on August 22, 2010:

"At the beginning, back in 2007, I started traveling," Van Boening said from Syracuse, N.Y., where he played in a tournament this week. "In pool, that means going overseas if you want to play the best players. It's not really like any other sport in that way. A golfer can be best in the world and hardly ever leave the country. I go overseas 10 times a year."

On a list dominated by players from Europe and the Philippines, Van Boening is ranked No. 2 in the world by AZBilliards.com and is somewhere among the top 10 on most any group of elite players you can find.
The journey started when he picked up a cue and hit the ball at the age of 2. He has never really stopped since.

"If it wasn't for my grandfather, my aunts and my mother I couldn't possibly be one of the best pool players in the world," Van Boening says.

The South Dakotan's rise in this cloistered corner of the sports world is highlighted by several unique elements.

No. 1, he is hearing-impaired. Though he communicates comfortably now with the help of hearing aids, he's close to totally deaf.

No. 2, he is conspicuous among his competitive peers for clean living, physical fitness and his single-minded dedication to his craft.

No. 3, he comes from a family of pool players. His grandfather, Gary Bloomberg, is a nationally accredited instructor and jazz musician who continues to perform as a trick-shot artist at age 83. Shane's grandmother, mother and aunt have also won national pool titles....

In the article it was quoted that with his clean living lifestyle he'd be a natural for endorsements other than pool products.

I agee...and do hope it happens for him.

I watched Shane play for a few hours at Billiards Ink, in the viewing area elevated above the tight pocket GC1 about 8 feet away. Words cannot describe how exciting that was. Not because of his reputation or short history, just the mind blowing shot making and position play. The guy is a pool ball making machine and I did get his autograph.

i wonder if shane is possibly as close as you can get to the "perfect pool player" in that he cant hear very well. this no doubt must have helped him over the years. i saw on cnn that lance armstrong has these amazing lungs, nobody can even compare, he has these tremendous advantages that no amount of his opponent's training could overcome. i wonder if shane's "ailment" can be looked at like that. anyway, i find it fascinating...

Thanks JAM. I appreciate your kind words and your love of the game.

Shane appears to be a great ambassador for our country. I'd love to go watch him play.

A story about Shane.
About 2 years ago he came to one of my Tournaments way out in San Angelo Texas. He and David G were playing for the Hot seat and the score was like 6-6.
A 7 ball got tied up on the point of the side pocket and they both bunted the ball a couple of times and both got safe. Finally Shane ended in peculiar spot and I was called to watch the shot.
Shane sat on the side rail and sort of jacked up and I got in position. He suddenly raised up and got into another position. I couldn't see and tried to sort of duck around behind him. Asit would go I bumped his cue and he fouled his tip knocked the ball off the rail.
He turned and smiled and even David G was laughing. He looked me squarely in the eye and said,"You are on two fouls"!!
David is a good sport and we reset the balls and continued on, but he would have had every reason to be pissed at me. Still, he just smiled. It was a special moment to me.
So a while later while between matches he came to me and asked if I knew his Mom. I said yes and asked how Timmy was doing which he replied she was well.
He then asked,"How long have you known my Mom"?
I replied," Well I guess since about,,,,,,,How old are you again?"
The kid exposed that big smile again and we all had a good laugh. I meant nothing by it and really couldn't believe I said it, but again he exposed his sense of humor.
Anyway, the Kid is very much human and a very, very decent young man!

Thanks for posting this JAM. SVB is a player that deserves the accolades and also represents our sport in the most positive way. SVB is a hard worker and a ton of talent.
