I have a cue I love and play well with ,so why is it every once in a while I get the urge to buy something different ? What causes this ? I see alot of
other players go through this over and over.I'm not judging or casting stones just trying to understand why this happens to me and others.

the grass is always greener on the other side. It's consumer side of human nature to always want something more.

a friend of mind once said " People should try to want what they have and not have what they want"

Hi,

For me, I have stroke issues and lots of bad habits. When I get in a rutt and I can't seem to break out of it, I look to fixing the problem by changing equipment. Sometimes it helps for a short while, but I'm not sure why, but then back to normal. The only things that have really helped my game are practice and lessons. I was up to 15 cues for a while and have worked my way back to 6, but I really only play with a Greg Hearn cue I purchased last year.

Thanks,
Dan

same stick for ten yrs

For me there has only been my Harry Richards or house cues. Don't plan on buying another stick unless a catastrophy occurs. Good thought though.

Well Matt my friend I tried a nice used cue you sold me because the price was close to right, not real close but almost close. LOL. I think we just buy or trade cues looking for the hit that is so special we would be happy, at least for a month. But I don't know since I have 30 or more cues and 65 fishing outfits and have not fished in 5 years, so maybe I'm just a hoarder.--Leonard

I think there is a good measure of human nature involved. We all have this area of interest, and lets face it pool cues are cool. They are like electric guitars, muscle cars, custom knives, fine booze, hot chicks, whatever etc...So once we are interested in pool and cues, we want to give it our best. These things are functional art ( that makes them even more desirable ) that we get to use to pursue our happiness. They make a great game greater. Brain pleasure sensor overload...I love it! What with the way things are now, many attractive deals, I for one am very new cue itchy.

Why is the grass greener on the other side?

It's not the having, it's the getting. It all started when we were kids, and a friend got something new, and you wanted it too.. He was having so much fun with it, and you wanted that. If/When you got it, the first couple of days were great.. after that.. HE GOT SOMETHING ELSE.. the old 'whatever' was just that.. old. Now it was time for the next new shinny whatchamacallit that would keep you entertained. Ad infinitum.

Now you're older, and guess what.. Now you get to choose what toys you want to spend your hard earned cash on. (In some of our cases, with our wives permission *or without her knowledge*. Better to ask forgiveness than permission sometimes.) Anyway...

That's the way we've been programmed since we were young. Sometimes it's hard to over ride that programming, even when we know why we're doing it. If you were brought up frugally, you may not have this issue. I know a couple players that have had the same cue for ages, and have no plans to get anything else.. ever. But that's a rarity.

All in all... life is fairly short, and being happy in that life is a good thing. Do what makes you happy if you can. If getting a new toy makes you happy, and doesn't hurt you or anyone else in the process.. I don't see a reason not to do it.

That's it really...the human nature of always wanting more...

I think it is human nature, but as players, you'd think we would learn after selling a cue we are playing great with for a long time to venture into the unknown. I started playing again recently, and was using a Gulyassy sneaky. After playing my beast pool in quite some time, I promptly (out of the blue) started using something else . I'm a Moron...

I'm a whoreder too. Don't feel bad.

Good question.....

For me personally, it's a matter of shopping and spare time.....if I am busy with work or just busy playing, but I rarely get to look at cues on AZ or elsewhere, I just enjoy my equipment.....it's the viewing of cues and spare time that cause me to want to shop....

Golf clubs, same thing.....if I play once a week, but never go into a golf shop or look at clubs online, I am happy with my set.....it's when I read reviews of better clubs or go the pga superstore that I start salivating when I see all the new clubs out there...

My recommendation - don't look....avoid shops or looking in the for sale section....don't look at posts on different cues.....simply focus on your game and posts revolving around mechanics.....it will save you some coin :D

I had three perfectly lovely players in my case...but for me, it's now all about keeping with the basic configuration I like in a cue, and trying out new things, in different woods that I like, from different makers. While I am no longer chasing that 'last great player'...I am still very careful with whom I chose to craft a cue, and playability is a main consideration before anything else.

To that end, I now have four perfectly lovely players in my case, and in another year or so, will likely add a fifth...once I find the right maker, with the right woods, with a reputation for making cues that 'play'.

I wish I knew the answer because i've sold some very nice cues thinking I needed to try something else and then after some time passed I wondered why I sold a couple of the nice cues i've owned. I've owned enough cues in my life to know that there isn't a super cue that will change my game out there, but I have found out that some cues do play and feel better than others. For me it was a matter of finding out what I wanted in a cue, for example: what type of style, what joint do I like the best, what type of shaft suits me etc. After going through some cues i've found out what I like in a cue and I haven't had that urge to buy and sell that I used to have. Maybe that's the answer for some of us......

I always looked at it as the two halves of a whole. One half is actually playing pool and the other half is the equipment. One without the other isn't much fun and us humans do like to have fun.

I don't know what has happened to me :frown:, I said I never buy another cue three cues ago. I also said I'd never need another case four cases ago :embarrassed2:.

I will NEVER buy another cue or case as long as I live !!!

Maniac (needs psychriatric help ;))

For me, it was about finding that ideal feel. I found it several years ago in a Japanese pro shop, but simply wasn't going to spend that much. The old production cue I have now is at least its equal and has pretty much scratched the itch. I still like cues and cases, but find myself at a sweet spot with my current setup and don't see any reason to change it.

Yea Matt the very sick looking ebony on ebony w/red veneers for sale here on AZ has your name on it after a trip to Profiecient Billiards for a refinish. Good Luck Bro--Leonard

That's not me ......too much ebony.I learned from a very well versed cue
maker that ebony plays a little flatter and is better for strait pool than rotation
games.I want an R-6 or R-12 with red veneers and maple forearm and all that
I am hoping to have an R-2 on the way soon ;)
