Grady, unfortunately, it's not enough for people to make decisions for themselves....these days, they also need to tell others what to do and how to run their business.....even though none of their own money is on the line.....for most people though, the smoking issue doesn't effect them personally, so they are comfortable enacting their will.....the funny thing is the next time it might not be something they agree with, or worse yet, the next banning might be something that effects their own job.....I wonder if their tune will be the same????
I do wish you all the best of luck and hope your business can stay afloat....times are tough, but keep the faith.....
Normally I am anti-government and can't stand when they take away freedoms.
I own two restaurant / bars with pool tables and we currently allow smoking. Any place that I have seen in Michigan that tried to go to a non-smoking bar has went out of business. Michigan recently passed a law that is going to take effect in a couple of months to ban smoking in bars. I think this might hurt our business slightly for a while but in the long run will help bring out people who never came in because of the smoke.
I have never smoked and can't stand when I get home and smell like an ashtray.
It would be bad if we were forced to go smoke free but our competition wasn't as in Grady's situation.
The only crazy thing with Michigan's law is we still can't have smoking outdoors if we serve food or drink. Hopefully this will get changed as both of our locations have large decks that would bring in smokers during the warm months.
The problem with that is that the 90% are not putting any money into the places that the 10% frequent...
You'll go outside with your friends who are smoking to get some fresh air? Isn't that an oxymoron? The problem with your logic is that if the place was smoke free, the 10% would still go and a good portion of the 90% would go as well. This would be a win for the business owner.
Yet 10% are allowed to have behavior that discourages the other 90% from showing up.
Selfish people, that's what it comes down to. Most smokers don't give a crap about the discomfort and harmfull effects thier habit has on other people.
I'm glad we have smoking bans here in Canada. I'm a non-smoker, but often just to be social I'll go outside with my smoker friends and get some fresh air.
Smoking is bad for you, but you should be able to do bad stuff to yourself if you want to.
Allow all your customer's to smoke but have them do it over the table. The reason for this is because before you let them do this you attach insdustrial vacuums in each pocket to suck up the smoke. Kind of like the air blowers in bowling alleys but in reverse and 200 times stronger.![]()
But smoking doesnt do "bad stuff" to just the smoker, but those around them too. Sorry, the health of those around them trump the bad habit of the individual.

I was going to answer Donny Mill's query about could anyone justify smoking in today's pool rooms? On the thread though, it was far off topic. I'll try and please non-smokers don't light into me. As I do this, remember I don't smoke.
90% of my customers smoke. Go out my front door in either direction one mile and it is legal to smoke but not in my little parcel of the township where my room is located. My town wants me to be non-smoking and also build a deck for my customers to go outside to smoke.
Playing pool and having a few drinks and enjoying smoking with friends is Americana at it's finest,NOT going outside in
the cold to enjoy one of life's greatest pleasures.
American pool rooms have to fade internet poker, casinos, inflation, taxation up the ying-yang. Lots of places are out of business and more to come. How about giving me and others a break about the smoking? I promise that I have suffered a lot more from alcohol and drugs than I ever did from smoking.
Thanks for your kind attention.
