THIS is what pool needs more of

I got some facts about Earl and an oppinion that I think is pretty spot on. I do believe that he could be the one who at least brings pool into the forefront. Don't mean it will make it the NFL or anything like that but he is a little like J.R from Dallas or John McCenroe.

Facts as I see them.

1) He puts asses in seats (Nomatter what the reason for that is)

2) He is a nightmare for any promoter to handle behind the scenes and up front.

3) You never know what he is gonna do.

4) You never know how far he will take his alter ego (Earl does some of these things cos "It's part of the show" his words not mine)

5) He gets cheered and applauded and brings a smile to faces at the Mosconi Cup WHEN HE ISN"T THERE! They show clips of him on the tvs around the arena during some commercial breaks of previous Mosconi moments.

6) Even the Europeans love him deep down an d they cheer for him too at Mosconi. (Love to hate)

7) After all the antics and the spot light is off I have personally seen him do some things that would warm your heart. (If the TV, fans lovers and haters could see some of the things he has done when nobody is watching it would make people see a different side)

8) He is a pain in the ass (Just thought it should be mentioned again :)

9) He can be his own worst enemy.

Just wanted to share my thoughts and if he could take his attitude from a 10 down to an 8 I think he would do great for the sport but its a fine line between getting Earl and getting a nutcase. Like in the original posters clips. The Mosconi one, if he had not walked off and took the heat from the fans and smiled just letting people know he knew what he was doing to wind them up it would have been a great moment. Some of this is JMO some is fact.

Totally Agree

and why is that picture of Europe still on the front page. Time to flush it down the hole!!!

No Earl fan here, but I cannot deny that there are times where Earl generates excitement in our sport in a positive way. The problem is that for every time he does this, he behaves in a way that embarrasses the game five times.

There was no Earl Strickland at this year's Mosconi Cup, but, in my opinion, it was the most exciting and memorable Mosconi Cup ever.

I couldn't agree more, I've always like Earl even though I may not like some of the things I've seen him do but those are things he does not who he is. From the very first time we met him when my daughter was 4 he's always been extremely nice to us, my daughter's now 20. The first pic I ever took of her with him when she was maybe 6 or 7 he took his stick out of his case & put it together for her to hold; he told her she holding the stick he had used to win many world championships. One thing that I always laugh at when I remember it is this: She was about 13 & a couple of my friends were there at the US Open 9 Ball Championships getting players to sign the programs. They didn't want to feel like they were imposing on anyone so there were many big ones they hadn't yet talked to so my daughter took them around & introduced them getting the pros to sign for them. Earl had just gotten eliminated & had played on the TV table no less so you can imagine the fussing he was doing to everyone. We walked up & Ashley said hey these guys want your autograph, he starts saying things like I don't know why they want my autograph, I'm a loser, & such things like he does. She just looked at him & said "Be quiet Earl & just sign the program", he looked at her, laughed, & said ok sweetheart.

I know a lot of people have a lot of bad things to say about him & I've witnessed many such things in the 16 years of knowing him. But, I've also seen how nice he can be as well & goes out of his way at times.

I agree that there needs to be some more character for pool, especially televised pool. Poker is being used as an example and let's face it, some of the most popular names in poker are not only because they are good players but also because they have more character than a robot.

Tennis and golf as well. Tiger normally is very reserved but when he drops a ball in the cup from 5 yards off the green to win a tournament he reacts like any person should. I'm excited because he's excited, we empathize with players of any sport that react the way we would. They don't need to jump up and down on the tables or scream at the spectators but some reaction would be nice.

I like to watch jeanette play.

Tiger reserved LMAO you must mean now not when he was winning he is the king of the fist pump and gyration after any good shot and if that was not enough entertainment you could have watched his thug caddy grab someone's camera and smash it

The real fact is watching pool is boring to the average joe if you put the pit at the SBE on reality tv it would have a much better viewing audience than the finals of the pro event

Maybe they haven't been watching gold until recently. I've never been much of a Tiger fan from the time he started, don't really know why. John Daly was always a favorite of mine to watch & I'm so glad he's playing again!

Couldn't agree more Mark. At the Bad Blood event, when you had me "watching" Earl for the weekend, including driving him back and forth to his hotel, the guy could not have been nicer.

I was telling Earl my buddy (AZ'er Kobachi) is gonna be pissed he missed this match because of his "girlfriend", and I asked him he would would talk to him on my cell phone... and yep, I dialed and Earl took the phone, calling him an "idiot for missing some great pool". And then Earl proceeded to give him a blow by blow of the event thus far. My buddy LOVED it !!!

And he signed every autograph, and talked to anyone that would listen during breaks and after the event. The only time he was "rude" was when some d*ckwad asked Earl to sign a Johnny Archer poster....and Earl said, "i'm not signing that, why would I sign that, got the hell out of here"
The guy sat there stunned, and I said, yeah, you should leave now... and he got up and slinked away. I can't blame Earl for that one at all.

And afterwards, when the Bad Blood event was over, Earl asks me if I have his phone number, and I said, no, why. Well, in case you ever need to call me for anything, and he gives me his cell phone number. I've yet to ever call him, but I'll keep it programmed on my phone just in case I ever need bail money :) Not to many pro players in any sport would even think about doing that.... Yeah, during battle he turns it up the heat a notch, but I think he needs that, and feeds off that.....

But pool without Earl is NOT something I look forward to anytime soon :)

ChicagoRJ,

Very good Earl post. I hope he is some part of the game for many a year to come.

If pool wants to become popular, in a world full of reality stars, then it must have players like Earl, Keith Mcready and Minnesota Fats!

Jay,

I would tend to agree with you but I refer women in high heels more than girls in tennis shoes. Maybe you can find an appropriate video clip.

Regards to You &

Rick,
You don't want any of those poor gals to twist an ankle ,....do ya ?
be hard to hear Earl ranting with all them heels clicking anyway. Besides, I made sure they had black & yellow pom-poms. ( 8 & 9 ball ) :D

I think Earl is good for pool. I hate it when he badgers ppl in attendence though. (he's gone too far then !)

All things considered, such antics as his only drag the sport further downhill. It's actually not the attention getter that some people might wish it to be.

Heard that a million times but never saw the reasoning. Did people stop watching football due to endzone dances and antics? Does anyone get turned off when an entire NBA team rushes to the center of the court and jumps up and down and cries after winning a title?

Pool's got problems but this sort of display from earl isn't one of them.

I think anybody who increases attendance and interest in any sport or hobby is a benefit. That is even more so if they can do it in a positive manner.

I am in 50% agreement with you. I know that he should take the heat from the spectators a little because thats what he has brought to the game himself. I don't agree that he should just sit and take everything. You have to hear some of the things that are said. Some of it is pretty bad and I don't mind some razzing and in fact think its great but there is a line and some of these people show up on purpose to cross the line.

WHAT ?

No high heeled line of Rockets doing high kicks attached to demonstrate that they can kick the scoring beads into place between pool games?

I'm disappointed.

ok, I honestly didn't think about that. My thought was 1-sided. I agree with the other 50% and thanks for bringing that up. Us fans aren't :angel2: either !!
