This is why Pool is COOL...

The game of pool

Every woman I ever lived with or married, I met while playing pool. Whoops, wrong thread. That's the worst thing.:o

Northern California, Sacramento, South to Medesto and west to the Bay Area, All the pool rooms respect the weekends and yearly tournaments.

It has been that way since I can remember. No one plans a 'special' event without first discussing it with the other rooms.

Pool is Cool in Northern California

That is a very nice event. When I lived in Sacramento the one thing I noticed about Sacramento Pool was all the Room Owners worked in a Single Direction, worked with one another, they realized it was beneficial to work together. I recall one day being in Terry Place's on Fruitridge Road, and he had flyier's for another room event in a few weeks.

tears in my eyes

Pool is cool because when you play somebody they can see your heart and determination and see if your just a banger or not. I get beat alot ands almost every body wants to stay and give me pointers on the game. Pool has by far the best class of people in any walk of life. No rookie hazing just great people and a great game.

Pool is cool because

When your stroke is on and everything is right there is a feeling thats down right magical. I listened to the stories my uncles told about my dad playing in 60s and the big money games he had won all over the mid south and I was Like " you are Kidding Right " " this is my dad we are talking about" from the first time I got to see him Play when i was about 16 or 17 and saw what he could sdo with a cue ball i was in shock and immediatly hooked I was the son of a certified world beater and had no real clue. That was 25 years ago. There are so many players from all walks of life that you would never meet in any other sport. The same guy who fixes your car or prepares your taxes , or serves you breakfast at your local diner may just be a maestro with a pool cue. When we all come together in the pool rooms across america and size each other up whos the World beater , The Road Agent , the players and the bangers its a fraternity of people that is the most diverse of any sport

see you in the pool hall

Why pool is cool

The initial thing that attracted me to pool was the psychology behind the players. Gamblers, hustlers, purists, alpha dogs, shy types, league players, bangers, and pros. All with unique styles to their game. Some guys would tear through tournaments and some would wait quietly until after the tourney then beat the winner out of his prize money. Hustlers with the art of matching up down to a science. The purists correcting the tiniest motions until everything is perfect. The pros going day in and day out living and breathing pool. Hotel food, sleeping in cars, weeks or months without seeing family members. Bangers just playing and having fun. Everyone of these types combined to make the pool world go round.

This is what's cool about pool:

The action gets started at 8:30 a.m. sharp each Tuesday morning, with the resounding clack of a cue ball on a break.

The game is eight ball. Solids and stripes...

...There is no smoking, food or drink allowed in this pool hall, which features white walls, white linoleum floors and an antiseptic cleanliness.

Even cursing is verboten. When an occasional profanity slips out in the heat of battle over an easy shot missed, it's strictly PG-13 stuff. A clock radio plays classical music in the background.

One wouldn't mistake the level of play for Willie Mosconi running the table at a high-stakes Vegas tournament, or even Paul Newman portraying Fast Eddie Felson in "The Color of Money"...

When I got my table 11 years ago I thought sure there would be some place in town where "geezers" (55 and up maybe) would gather of a morning and play some but there was nothing.. NOTHING. And worse, there was no interest. I thought that guys raised in the 40's and 50's would have an interest in pool but it wasn't to be found. I was profoundly disappointed... and still am.

So, I practice by myself most of the time and I've learned to have a great time doing it. It's the rolling of the balls that counts. The art, the jazz (improvisation).

I like pool 'cause you can't fool whitey.
You can fool people a lot of the time.
But it doesn't matter how stupid or aggravating you are...
..if you hit 'whitey' right ..he thinks you're Einstein

Pool has always been cool to me, like when I started in high school, playing at the Y, when I joined the navy, watched a hustler in San Diego... pure, real pure, I asked him to teach me, he says "how much money have you got? None? sit down and watch". I learned, I put up money to learn....... God what a fantastic game..... pull out my Tex cue, just touching it is like sex............. I love pool...........

That is what I recall about Sacramento Pool. Owners were friendly to each other!

Pool is Cool;
When sharing pool tips and tricks with the C players. Those players that really want to learn everything they can as soon as they can... Those players that have been playing pool for only a few months or just under a year.

Seeing their eyes light up when they make a shot they thought was impossible just moments before.

I really enjoy seeing those players learn and apply what they have learned and start cashing in those weekly tournaments.

Of course there is no substitution for 'competition' experience. You can practice all you want, but when you compete, that is where you learn how to handle pressure. I am usually impressed with how well some of these players play under pressure.

Whitey on a string

Years ago a young Chinese man timidly asked me how to draw a ball.
I don't teach but am known to talk a lot about the game.

He was cueing low and raising the tip coming into the cue ball.
I showed him how to address the cue ball a little higher and let
the tip dip down as you strike it.
I showed him from the other end to hold his elbow up so that the
hand comes up on the way through and the tip goes down...just
like a teeter-totter.

He started making long draw shots with the softest stroke i've seen.
After a really nice draw...the kind where the ball comes back a couple
feet and then picks up speed...he looked at me like I was Santa Claus.

...and no,he wasn't named Virginia..he wasn't from Virginia...
..but I did know Rudolph...uh..Wanderone,that is

Now...how :cool:COOL was that?

Pool is cool because:

--it shows you the cause and effect of what you do. (Same, really, as "you can't fool whitey" above.)

--it is the Great Equalizer (age, gender, physical size or handicaps, muscle strength- these aren't auto determinates of skill or performance).

--practice makes better, and better gives self confidence. (and joy).

--you can never be perfect at it. (whatever your level, there's always more to learn.)

--the skills, confidence, and mental strength you get from playing pool help you in every area of your life.

--you always have a familiar place to go to, with the same familiar characters, no matter what city or country you find yourself in.

More and more ways Pool is Cool.
Thanks for posting Ms Blah Blah

More Reasons why Pool is Cool

When you walk into a pool hall , the first time everybody notices you

You can enjoy the game alone or with others

Pool is not affected by the weather

Equipment is optional , you dont have to have anything to begin playing pool but a couple bucks in your pocket to pay for table time

You meet and interact with some of the best folks on the planet

Wheather your social or a loner you can find serenity in a pool room

There is a nothing more refreshing than stepping inside a cool dark pool room on a hot summer afternoon

Besides all of the above reasons (teaching, learning, meeting different people, etc etc), the creativity of it all keeps me wanting more.

It is amazing how many different ways there are to go about doing the same thing. It is okay to do something the same and obvious way every time, but to figure out how to do something better, different and inspiring is priceless. I also get a kick out of having a small bar crowd sweat a league match, hearing 'ooo' and 'ahh' every couple of shots. And liking to bank, it can be a lot fun trying to figure out just how the hell that ball can make it to a pocket when all options appear impossible. Does it carom off the adjacent ball to bank all the way down? Will the CB knock the blocking ball out of the way? If I hit it right, can I unspin/bend around a ball that appears to be blocking? And how the hell did I miss that rail shot after BIH?!?!

I can spend hours by myself in the bar knocking them around and do it all over again the next day. The people, the atmosphere, the game.. almost time to leave work and go play pool!
