Jeopardy Is My Road Game

With all due respect to Freddy the Beard....how did he REALLY play against top notch bank pool players. I have often heard that he played second class to other great players. I have been told by multiple players that he was not as strong of a player as he claims to be. (No disrespect intended) I am just interested in the truth.

Many reputable people in the pool community have told me this and I just wanted to ask you guys. Freddy, I know you post on here so please feel free to chime in.

Just to let you guys know that #1. I dont play worth a damn #2. No disrespect intended, just wondering who is telling the truth.

I am sure that other people have wanted to ask this question, but didnt have the balls to ask it. I do have the balls. I dont want to start an arguement, just looking for quality insights.

I got the balls to ask this question after Billy had the balls to leave Grady off his list. I have heard that from many people too. But I dont know this to be a fact.

I have a feeling that you are only going to get opinions here as well. Unless it comes from Freddy himself. JMO

I have never seen The Beard play so I'll leave that to others to comment on. The thing I wanted to say is that in my experience in reading his posts is that he has admitted several times when he has ducked or lost to other players (most times the game wasn't banks). He is a member of the Bank Pool Hall of Fame. I think that speaks for itself.

I'll give you my stock answer when people came to me and asked me how their next opponent plays. "He never misses a ball". Is that what you want to hear?

You want the truth? Okay, Freddie played under Taylor and Bugs. So did everyone else. But somehow Freddie managed to come to the plate against just about everyone else. You did need credentials to play him some Banks.

I sent a very good player into action with Freddie once and we were betting high, nose bleed high. My man came through, but he was worn out afterwards, and couldn't leave the hotel for two days. He looked like he had been in a war, and he had. Freddie was a battler and a scrapper.

All the little scandalous rumors you are hearing may well be correct. I don't doubt that there were ten to fifteen Bank Pool specialists that Freddie needed weight from. Guys like Truman or Tony Fargo or Sigel for that matter. Bet you didn't know that Sigel was a top banker. And so was Jimmy Fusco.

But when it comes to knowledge of the games (all games, not just Banks), I don't know if I ever met a more intelligent analyst of all things Pool! Freddie likes to come across as this street smart hustler. He is all that and much, much more. Freddie is one highly intelligent human being and you should be thankful that he choses to share some of that knowledge here. I know I am. Freddie is a gift to this forum.

It doesn't take balls to sit behind a computer screen and question somebody's ability, especially someone like the Beard. That takes ignorance sir!
What you are sorely missing is tact and the ability to spell and use punctuation marks where needed.

First off, how can you possibly think this post is anything but
disrespectful???
Second off - you might want to slow down a bit on congratulating
yourself for...

But most of all, did Freddy ever say he was a top echelon bank pool
player? I think he would defer to Taylor, Bugs and Clem Metz, but so
would the rest of the human race.

I'm not questioning his ability...I don't truly know his ability. A few strong players have told me one thing and other players have told me something else. I would like to know the truth. I like to read Freddy's posts and would like to purchase his book. However, I would like to know some information first. As I said in my original post, I mean no disrespect. Just because you know how someone plays, that doesn't mean the I do. I think that this post is perfectly legit. coming from a young person like myself.

If you were going to send your kid to a tutor, wouldn't you want to gain information about that person. I don't know that much about him that is why I am asking. I want to know how much to trust his posts and his knowledge of the game.

If you would go back and read my post again, you will see that the post was tactful and if you can't handle someone discussing another persons game knowledge, then you need to grow some thicker skin.

Some of us haven't been around the pool world forever. Some of us don't live our lives researching the game of pool. You should not belittle posters who are simply trying to gain information about a player in order to improve their game.

Also, it is quite hilarious that you would bring up spelling and punctuation marks on posts. I guess you must be taking a grade. I will do my very best to edit my posts for your liking the next time I make one Dr. English.

Call me a realist, but the only posters that I truly take much stock in about instruction are Grady and David S. since I have watched Grady play numerous times and I consider David a good friend.

If people like Freddy are going to post on this forum trying to get much to check out their latest book or visit their new blog, I feel that I DEFINATELY have the right to discuss how reputable their abilities are in comparison to other top pro's.

Once again...no disrespect to the Beard...i'm just looking to gain some information about, what appears to be, a great player from the past.

Why didn't you just ask Freddy in the first place. Where better to get your FACTS than from the horse himself. Also, if the only posters you truly take stock in are Grady and David S. then ask them - not everyone else. Why ask a bunch of people for facts about something when you really don't take stock in their answers? Seems kind of silly to me. If I didn't really take stock in someones opinion about someone - I sure wouldn't ask them for it. Call me a realist...........

Although I don't know FREDDY on a personal level he prolly isn't peeved by your thread. It didn't come across as caustic or sarcastic and I think he'll take it at face value.

In answer to your questions read post # 4 by JAY.

I have been around the game for almost 50 years, and while not a strong player, I have known and been around many of the top players for decades. As far as their ability to write books on bank pool, I would rate Freddy at the very top. If you have bother to check reviews of his books by some of the top writers and players (George Fels, for example, or Tom Shaw for another example), you would know that they stand alone as books on bank pool. And, as others have already said, Freddy's knowledge of other games and the world of pool in general, is exceptional. I really don't believe you meant any disrespect for Fred, but your post could be interpreted in that way. BTW, I hope we can get some action going here in Northern KY so you can come up and sweat a little!:)

You just worded the post wrong. It sounds as though you are calling Freddy a liar and a hack player. I know that is not your intent, but that is how it reads.

The best way to phrase the post would have been:

"How does Freddy rank among the best bank players?"

You think your post was TACTFUL????

There are many dictionaries avalable online - for free - use one, please.

Dale<tactful to the end>

yeah I dunno how the question can be asked without seeming disrespectful, even if you put in a bunch of "no disrespect intended". In fact I've come to learn that "with all due respect" are the magic words that usually come before a lenghty version of "f.u."

Why would you possibly post just to say "I heard this respected player isn't quite as good as everyone makes him out to be"? You (should) lready know he's still really really good. Why nitpick on whether he's A+++ or merely A++?

You probably wouldn't know a quality insight if one hit you right in those big BALLS of yours. I ain't afraid to say that either!
I got the balls to ask this question after Billy had the balls to leave Grady off his list. I have heard that from many people too. But I dont know this to be a fact.

Can any of those Louisvllle shortstops fade this:

I know you probably mean well, kid, but I am a little warm at those bank pool shortstops in Louisville. My pal, Truman probably got you all riled up. I did go into Louisville looking to play anybody in town (except Truman). With all those big mouth, great players there, they mustered up one guy to play some $50 a game. Gerald. I played in that little creep joint on the 4 x 8's and did lose a few games to Gerald. Nobody else would play, and nobody would bet anything either and nobody would go play on a 4 1/2 by 9 including Gerald. And nobody from there, sure as sh*t ever came up to Chicago to get some. Actually, Fargo did come up twice when I was on my final gasps. He lost both times. Once for money, and once in the Chicago Bumps bank pool tournament. Although truthfully, by then I didnt like his action and was glad to escape.
Jay, thanks for sticking up for me, but I must also take issue with the ten or fifteen guys that you say could spot me. Who were they? Check out the list below. Only three guys spotted me on that list. Bugs, Truman and CornBread. Everybody else I beat even at least once. (Now don't be throwing batting averages, Jay. I only said I beat 'em all even at least once.) Makes you feel kinda good to be on that list though, don't it?

I apologize Oh Master Banker. I knew that would come out wrong when I wrote it. What I should have said is that there were maybe ten to fifteen guys you wouldn't be the favorite over. I doubt that you would have asked any (or many) of them for weight.

Does that sound more like it? You'd damn sure get up there and play them even, even if you had the slightly the worst of it.

Somebody struck a nerve! I wouldn't take time to list that many people unless I was a little on the riled side. Bank on, though, brother!
