given that this device is apparently dumb and useless, IS there a good device for leveling a table, other than just slow rolling balls around from corner to corner? I mean, is there something that will tell you EXACTLY what's wrong? e.g. lower left needs to go down X, upper right should come up Y, tweak upper left a little also, the slate is humpbacked and should be tossed, etc?

Locally we have been having trouble with one particular table, it seems like as soon as you fix one corner or area, another area gets wrong, and now we're at the point where balls roll in the opposite direction as if the slate was arched a tiny bit in the middle. I've heard this is possible, but I'd love to have a surefire way to confirm if this is the case here or if our testing just sucks.

A machinist level will tell you exactly where the table is off. But it sounds like you will need to do more than just shims under the legs. What make is the table?

Pooltable911, thanks for the followup... hope you might be able to help.
It's a Gandy, not sure how old. 15+ years or so.

It's been on the upper floor of a very open, airy room. It probably has seen some pretty good temperature extremes, especially cold. Right now, if I slow roll diagonally from right corner to opposite left corner, the ball drifts left into the siderail, and if I roll the same way from left to right, it drifts right into the right siderail. Common sense tells me we're screwed.

Looks like those levels are a bit pricey, 100-200 bucks >_<
I know that doesn't seem like much considering it could be used for years on many tables but right now times are super tight. If that's the best or only way though I might be able to talk the owner into it.
