I just had the first tip install on my Revo after the factory one. As you can see from the picture it is tapered/conical which I don't like very much. I had noticed this repairman doing it on other people's cues before and I specifically asked him to keep the edges straight. He said he would do just a little bit of taper because he feels it helps with mushrooming.

The base of the tip is now slightly narrower than the ferrule, I can catch the ferrule with my nail. Is that a problem or nothing to worry about?

I used to start with 14mm tips and grind them down by rolling them against a flat file. They have to taper to keep the file clear of the ferrule. They played fine otherwise. That said, a professional retip shouldn't taper in that manner. If you get flaring you probably overhit stuff.
 
If you can catch your nail on the ferrule then he tapered or cut into the Predator tip pad and you’re gonna be stuck with your tip not being flush until you get a new pad which requires a authorized Predator repair center since any other pad other than Predators will void your warranty.
Same thing happened to me on my 314-3.

By ferrule I mean the red pad. It's just a question of the base of the tip being slightly smaller than that.

Use it. Maybe next time send it to Seyberts for a tip. Red pad is replaceable. I would not be concerned.
 
Unless you agreed to the taper, I would get him to replace it. I personally hate tapered tips.

Will it play badly...? I can't say. What I do know is if you're low on your cue while shooting you might not be able to reference the edge of the tip to the miscue limit of the CB. If you don't care about that, then the taper is non issue
 
While the tips I install do not have this taper I have done it on request before. I believe it will be fine and you may not even notice it after a few days of play.

Thems is wise words.

I have also requested it be done for me and it keeps the tip from needing to be trimmed at a later point, as it mushrooms.
 
I put them mine on with the same slight taper. It either completely goes away, or it's not noticeable. I would rather
take care of it on the front end and not have to trim it later.

It looks fine to me.

Yes. it is actually added value, to me and the installer.

Keeps me from having to bring it back for a trim later. Keeps installer from having to touch up the tip later.

I think the slight taper is a sign of an expert install.
 
IMO. It will play just fine and the OP is getting into his own head. An old hustle technique is getting into the opponents head on anything imaginable. I got a guy all screwy once by rolling his shaft on the table. It had a slight rise and he was upset forever about it. Guess he did not grow up in the days of playing with any old cue out of the rack. Back then you rolled a cue and if it was reasonable you shot pool and forgot all the little crap. Tip shaping was only a minor issue, I carried a small piece of sandpaper for that purpose.. Or you find the sweet spot in the roll of that cue that suited your shooting ability and away you went.. I never roll my own shafts, LOL!!
 
I asked Predator just for fun and their answer was

"The tip should be even on the top, straight and flush on all sides, all the way around. You should not be able to "catch" anything with your fingernail."

As a player and an installer I do not like it .Put it on straight and if it mushrooms trim it . It only takes a couple of minutes. You should get what you asked and paid for.

That's a perfect tip install. Nothing at all wrong with that.
