Tipping the tournament director

Holly and I took second place at this weekend's AWBT Scotch Doubles Fundraiser and I handed the tourney director a tip after we received our prize money. The tourney director looked at me like I was from Mars. Said she had never heard of such a thing.

I know it is very common out here on the Olhausen tour to tip the tourney director at the end of the event if you cash and I got to talking about it with Mike Mason out in Florida. He said he had never heard of anything like this.

Is tipping the tourney director that isolated a practice out there in the pool world?

Mike

I would think that around here, tipping the TD at the end of the tournament may look like a payoff....especially if you got a good draw.

Tipping AOK?

I have been running tourneys for many years and played in many over the years. I was tipped in the first tourney I ran...$2! I have been tipped many times and if I win or come in near the top with a decent amount of $$$...I always tip!

But...I lived in Vegas for 20 years.

from a movie

In "Caddyshack", Rodney Dangerfield slipped the referee
a tip *before* the match, saying "Keep it fair!" I always
liked his style.

When playing in tournaments in New York several years ago, it was common practice.

When pool is not your primary source of income and you make a little "free money", it is only normal to want to share some with the TD and the waitress too for that matter. I cant imagine anyone finding that odd. When i hit the number, i gave the guy in the stationery store a tip too.

I've never heard of it or done it.

Most of the tournament directors on the regional tours i used to play in are making a cut of the entry fees to begin with, that pay for their work day/weekend.

Some directors also get hooked up with free food and beverage from the house, so as far as i'm concerned, if i win money, it's all mine.

Surely i appreciate the job the director does, but if he's getting paid for it already out of everyones entry fee, i see no reason to toss him a bill off the top.
If there were a couple of key moments in the final match where he had to make some tough calls and i won an insane amount of money, THEN i might toss him something, but otherwise, no.

Is it common for tourney directors to be paid out of the entry fees? Most tourney directors for weekly events out here get paid by the room based on how many players are in the tourney. (Maybe something like $1.50 or $2 per player)

As for the tours, I know on the Olhausen tour the tourney director gets a share of the tour cards and that is it. Most of the players tip him at the end of an event though.

I am pretty sure he also got tipped by the winner of a recent big event he ran here in Az.

While I have never cashed in an Olhausen Tour event, I have cashed at many local weekly events and always try to tip the director if I cash in one of the top 2 spots.

Mike

I always tipped when I cashed.

I have been tipped when running a tournament. It is never expected and always appreciated.

It is a private action between two people and no one else's business.

Good TDs are very difficult to find.
Substitute TDs are very difficult to find.

Pool Players that DON'T complain.......

If a TD takes money I will accuse him of engaging in conflict of interest.I will argue that the TD may do favor to the players who gave gifts ( bribes)

Always Tip your Director

As a Tournament Director, I do believe it is important to rep your director, s/he is basically a valet/bellguy per say for the weekend, s/he can assist you in finding a room, or even another tournament to play in if you are still waiting for the finals, I at least, do my best to help out every player I come across.

not quite tipping but I've always tried to make "buying the TD a drink" the first thing I do when I win a comp, it's often met with surprise which I find odd. Being a TD seems like a thankless task so I think it's something everyone should do.

theres nothing wrong with tipping anyone you feel like tipping...as long as its after the event, not before!:)

every time I hear a discussion about tipping I think of the Mob movies. No better tipper than a Mob guy!

That's because they operate on 'Quid Pro Quo'!!!!

Most of the time we (TD's) get compensated well for our Tour Stops. Sometimes not so well.

TIPS are personal and rewarding but not expected...........SPF=randyg

I think you should tip the T.D. 50% of what you win, especially if it's me.

Actually, in all the tournaments I've done thru the years, I've gotten very few tips, and I've handed out millions of dollars in total. The biggest tips I ever got was $100 bill after handing Paricas 10K and Efren several thou.

I have been running our tourneys this season and have never been tipped in cash, several people have bought me drinks and thanked me for doing it. I would not feel right taking cash. TD's put up with a lot of crap but I do it for the love of pool and not monetary compensation. When the few problem players bark at me I bark right back, I'm in charge and they all know it.

On the other hand if you have a good system in place for your tourneys there should not be any way to manipulate the draw, and if you should receive a tip there would not be any questions as to why you received it.

I always give big tips to the tournament director when I win an event, but I can appreciate that those who are very tight for cash do not. Tip if you can afford to, and if you can't afford it, it's OK if you don't.
