Tobby Sweet

Dennis Gieske/Tex

I've been talkin' with dennis recently (we attended college at the same time) having not spoken to him or seen him since 4-96 at CJ's in Dallas, it was the weekend of Earls Million Dollar Package and the first PCA event. Here's the encounter they had. The Tables they played on @ Crazy Horse in Carbondale were gold cloth rag 9' AMF tables with 5'' pockets....Dennis was in Very Great Shape, was a boxer and bouncer and professional student and could dance/spin/bop and weave better James Brown. There was nightclub in Murphysboro IL about 7 miles out to town where Dennis would Dance with this gal who became the homecoming Queen of SIU. It was big deal back then because she was a single mother with a child, and it was frowned upon at the time, but she won the title anyway.
About 1:30 in the AM before the dance club/bar would close the dance floor would clear and Tex and his gal would dance and everyone would watch in amazement. Dennis had moves and spins and splits and you name it, Michael Jackson/John Travolta/James Brown couldn't match this mans talent, and what a boxer he was.

Here's his encounter with Toby in the late 60's, and I quote;

''Yes, I think I read something bout him a few days ago at the forum... About how good he was. All iknow is I had him so down for the first 12-14hrs that he begged me not to quit him. I had been up all day and ran a full 6 miles before I started to play him in the eve around 7-8 pm. Sooo, I stayed instead of taking a break to sleep some til next nite...and payed for it. We raised the bet a little and I started taking more chances and Whammo! He got juiced up and I lost it all...even the girl that was hanging around me all nite. She went with the winner! He was there with that Cuban Joe. With my cash I couldn't bet him enough to bust him. One of many mistakes I made long ago. Yes! I've been there.''

Been corrected/typo, my dad passed that weekend, on the 16th, allot of wierd things happened that weekend. As you can tell my writing is not near as good as my game was, but if you ever get a change pick up the P&B article on the million dollar Earl package, Francine and Mike highly recommended I write, so I did, and too my surprise.......ComPLEte Surprise, they published it word for word, I did catch the moment, but normally I can never write or express myself that well.

Hey Ed,

This is Mike Wong. I don't know you, and I don't know where you get off calling me a tool on your blog.

First of all, Toby and I made an arrangement to play 2 days earlier $200 a set races to 11 through Ken Kerner (Yes, rack your own). If he didn't want to play he should have said so, and I wouldn't taken the ride to Diamond Jim's.

When I get there he starts talking to me about one pocket, and push-out nine-ball, and no jump cues. Then he wants to play an ahead set. I mean, really?

I wasn't going to play an ahead-set. I understand that he was a top class player years ago, and even though he is older now, I may still be in a tough game. But, I was willing to play some sets with him in order to see where I stand as player. That's all I wanted to do.

But, when I got there, he wanted to change the game. So, why should I have played?

I was standing right when all that was said was said1
You had way more demands than Toby and thats why he got pissed,because you would not budge one bit!Rack your own is the oldest trick in the book,do you really think TOBY SWEET was going to let you pattern rack for yourself!Toby gave you this and that you gave up nothing that's why you didn't get to play the legend.

If you really wanted to see where you stand as a player against arguably the best money player to play the game,then why didn't you take his offer of a hotel room and play him by the game?
You said you wanted to grind,Toby offered you the best grind there is,and you said no!He guaranteed you 8 hours of play a day!Thats a grind not a few sets!
Yeah I called you a tool,maybe I'm wrong?But it is just a blog,I gotta write something,hope you understand.
