Tony Chohan...Alex Pagulayan

This is a very interesting debate and also a difficult one to judge correctly. All the players mentioned are great players and can get there against each other depending on the day. What needs to be mentioned is how the different style Tony plays affects different players. He does not play a power or conventional style. His style is more of a wide open game.A threat to shoot at any ball at anytime making his opponent uneasy as to where to leave Tony. I would say he is a underdog against Scott, Alex, Darren, and Efren in a long ahead set. However the rest of the list that I have seen mentioning Hall, Corey, and others would have major problems trying to keep him in check. Hence they would loose. Also something needs to be menioned; when Tony is shooting straight and making those make or bust shots no one has to win. When he is playing on that level no one on earth can fade him, to this day he has the highest one pocket gear I have ever seen. Although I must admit there are other players who are consistently better.

I know he can spot Richie Richeson the breaks pretty handily. You are probably a one pocket aficionado and know how strong that is considering how well Richie moves. Tony moved right a long with him and yes, he came with some serious firepower. I don't know if I agree about Darren being up there..maybe Dennis though. Anyways, I still stand by what I said and think Tony and Scott can play even and Tony would win.

Tony would be willing to play Alex, but I do not believe that Alex would be willing to give Tony any weight. In fact, Tony of today just might be able to play Alex of today Even Steven in one pocket.

Let the games begin!

My guess is Tony would require some weight to play Alex. There are probably at least a half dozen top players who would be rated higher than Tony in a high stakes match. Alex is definitely top 5 and could be the best on any given day just like several other top dogs. There is no clear cut best at 1 Pocket currently like there was with Efren for many years.

To be the best you have to beat the best. I love the line in the Hustler when Fast Eddie walks into Ame's Billiards for the first time and the guy at the counter says "no bar, no pinball machines, no bowling alleys, just pool, nothing else, this is Ames mister".

What i am saying is the best play the best without a spot. Maybe there should have been one more line added to that famous line. How about 'no spots'.

Don ;)

When your dealing with broke/chick pool players, they want the best of if on ''their'' money, and if they are being staked it's a whole nother story.

Tony is the best shooter in one pocket. Danny smith is the most creative and quick to leave a tester. Trex is not to be tested!

Alex has a little of both styles. Frost is reckless and master of the multi ball run. He is an all out ball runner. Once he is on his run no matter how low percentage the run. He can't bring himself to layup and play the score lead. Every time he has to finish his man quickly and not frustrate him to death. By making him suffer the up table game. Down 6 to 2!

My thoughts exactly

Justin Hall is too strung out to shoot fish in a barrel and Danny Smith can't win because Tony shoots and banks just as well and moves better. Again, I think he and Scott can play even with Tony being favorite.

Jhall is to strung out? On what? I've known him 20 years and wasn't aware he was strung out on anything. He also beat SVB a 6 ahead one pocket set last month in cape coral. What a stupid comment. I can see why you needed more educated people to give you an opinion. You see a guy in your hometown at a tournament for a weekend and all of sudden you know about the guys life. If Tony and Jhall play just Pm me and you got action!

Oh no!? An educated person on a forum!? I know one of his old road dogs really well as well as several other people who know him Justin well. Say whatever you want about me personally, without knowing me. I don't make statements without confidence. So how wel do you know him?

Just spent 4 days with him and never noticed, can you get strung out on a little pot? I was his Road partner before any of them, and I've never seen someone gain weight while being strung out. A lot of forum members know Jhall and he make smoke a little gonja but he ain't a junkie. Fing Bull$®%t for you to even say that about someone anyways, who are you to make comments like that about a person.

What will he give Danny, and what are you willing to go up on it for?

If you have ever had the pleasure to watch Alex play one pocket via youtube, stream or in person, then you know what a stone cold champion he is.

Alex moves like a ghost and can run 8 and out from very tough spots. IMO he is the best one pocket player alive today. Scott can't beat him even, JJ, Dany Smith, Shane (its close but not there), Richie Rich etc. However, most of you probably haven't had the chance to see Tony Chohan play because there aren't many videos of him playing and he just came back from a "break" about a year ago.

This guy plays so ****in lights out its insane. He was around Houston for a little while playing Richie Rich and just tortured him. I'd love to see him and Alex match up. I think that the only person that can hang with Alex right now is Tony. Its crazy how talented this guy is.

I was a little confused about his initial post too.

I don't think anybody would argue that jhall isn't one of the top 50 players in the USA.

That is about a million miles away from being unable to 'shoot fish in a barrel'

They played twice. First time, Danny gave up weight. Tony had just returned on the pool scene.

Second time, I can't remember. It might have been even. I'll have to ask Keith when he wakes up. He'll know. :)

Tony won both times. It happened in Detroit.

Tony is chomping at the bit to get down so if you think you can get him beat him now is the time. He just posted on FB that he'll take any game from anyone that seems anywhere close to gambling.

Yep, I'm aware of that.

I mentioned to Danny that he seriously needs a shot coach, and a road manager. The amounts he loses are staggering and his skill with making shots that no one else sees or thinks of is incredible.

This is the same guy who gave Justin a ball playing one hole, and then after that set (which was a complete dismantling) Justin said he'd play even. Truth is that maybe Danny needs a ball, or even if he can get someone to help him with shot selection.

Wow, Tony must have improved since he was away.

While I thought he was strong, I thought several could beat him handily, now it seems he is ready for anyone.

I will be anxious to see how he plays in the DCC. There is always a collection of great players, and he will be matched up to several if he lasts.

Maybe he will get to TV table.

Maybe JCIN could chime in a little on what I am speaking about. His match with Chris Bartrum in the US OPEN one pocket was one example of what I am reffering. Chris didnt make really any mistakes just Tony took those make or bust shots and he's off to the races. This is impossible to contain or stop. The only hope is if hes off and happens to miss these shots. Sorry for the rant just trying to explain myself.

Well said, I agree Tony can be very scary if the flyers are going. One way to really slow him down is to put him on a tighter table than a standard Diamond. He was playing strong and rolling through people in KC giving a few big spots when he was here to play the TAR match with Gabe. However, when they played the TAR match they were on a tighter Gold Crown and Gabe won pretty easily as many of the make or break shots Tony shot resulted in wins for Gabe.

Great Thread:thumbup::thumbup: I would love to see Tony play a big ahead set with Scott on a standard Diamond.

Thanks to all who have contributed.

This was the last 2 matches they played. Tony got 10-8 both sets but the second set if a ball went on the break it was a re-rack.

They played earlier that month and Tony won getting 10-8. Danny won giving 9-8. Danny won giving 10-8/9-8.

He gave Richie the breaks on a diamond with 4" pockets. Still ran 8 n out plenty. I am not familiar with how Tony used to play but he plays real strong now.

Danny started out spotting Tony 10-8, 9-8, first time. Then they played even. And then Tony ended up spotting Danny 9-8.
