Sorry to hear that, though the reason you can't go makes up for it in the longer run...

Top Money player

A few players on the road today that you don't want to gamble with are:

Eugene Stalev (The little Russian from Moscow)

Mike Durbin from Middletown, Ohio

Gary "Bushwhacker" Nolan from Indiana, PA

Ike Runnels from Chicago

And, if the two were still alive today. you would have to always add Cornbread "Red" Surge and Harry "Poochy" Sexton.

Lastly, one of the best money players ever was Johnny "Get Back JacK" Madden. He used to say, as he waved a large bundle of one hundred dollar bills above his head: I'll play any man in any land, any game that he can name, for amount that he can count. All he has to do is grab the rack and back the jack.

Stalev and I played some 1 pocket the last time he was in L.A. He approached me and I offered to play him some cheap $25 games playing even. He wanted to play for more so I said I would play him $100 a game if he gave me 9-7. I beat up on him and after he was 6 games down he called it a night. A couple of nights later he was back with his backer, I beat him 4 straight games and he wanted to adjust but I told him we could talk about that the next time we play, his backer told him he was done. Haven't seen him since and that was over a year ago.

I'm not sure if I am spelling it right. But I would put Jon hager on the list of great gamblers. Not only from the stories I've heard, but from the people he has beaten. I "heard" he played Ronnie Allen some One pocket. And gave Ronnie Weight!!!!!!!!!!!! I think he lost, but to give Ronnie weight in one pocket is ridiculus. He is in the BCA hall of fame for one pocket. Well story goes that jon or john( I don't know how to spell his name) didn't want to play ronnie but then ronnie made an insult about his father...," You're just like your daddy, you got no gamble in you!" And That just set john off. Honestly I think they play about even one pocket. But for anyone of them to give the other weight is sick. Well John got upset sayiing," I got no gamble, freeze up 5,000 and I'll give you 9-7." Of course this is just what I have heard. Also from what I hear, JOhn gives up ridiculus weight.... and My buddy said that he asked him why and he said,"bad action is better than no action." Well put him on the list. Maybe some of you know June's son John. June used to be a pro as well.

the top 3 money players here in manila :

1. dennis "the menace" orcullo

currently best money player in manila. beats efren reyes and django bustamante in 10-ball money games about 55-60% of the time. has the best break among the top players (he strung 9 racks against django in a 9-ball money game). although he beats efren most fo the time in 9-bll and 10-ball, he doesn'y have a prayer against efren in one-pocket and rotation.

he gave alex pagulayan a can of whoop ass 2 weeks before alex pagulayan became the world champion (manny "pacman" pacquiao backed alex and lost almost a million pesos   ).

i believe that dennis has reached legendary status in manila when it comes to money matches. no one wants to play dennis anymore without a spot. i even heard from a matchmaker friend that even "the lion" asks for a spot when matched up against dennis.

2. Ronnie Alcano

very unpredictable player who has questionable background. one of the two guys here (with the other antonio lining) who plays efren even in rotation and has a good chance of winning.

he idolizes efren so much that he had most (if not all) of his teeth pulled out. he also doesn't take a bath if he is in a tourney or in a winning streak like efren. :D :D :D

gives "panerseras" or third tier pros 40-80 handicap in rotation money games and wins most of the time.

3. Efren "Bata" Reyes

of course, we all know him.

That's just wrong
I pity his opponents....

I know them all John loves action,[Ronnie Allen too] His dad played at Rustys,so did June I know they bet high I held the $$ a few times! Ronnie needs weight, while he was visiting me he fell,I took him to doctor after a E.R. visit to see how bad ---IT WAS BAD--- How he playes now at all is something. The hall of fame was his past!! He is a good friend with a lot of HEART!!!

Just to clarify, Ronnie is not in the BCA Hall of Fame, he is in the One Pocket Hall of Fame, which has no affiliation at all with the BCA. The One Pocket HOF is the creation of OnePocket.org. We had our first annual banquet at last January's Derby City Classic, at which time Ronnie and other great players were honored. Besides being great players, these guys are also very entertaining characters, so it was a blast!! The second annual One Pocket HOF banquet is already scheduled for Tuesday night (January 10th) during this coming DCC.

Shooting At The Money Ball For The Big Cheese:

This is an excerpt from my upcoming book, The GosPool According to the Beard:

A close tie between Artie Bodendorfer, Leonard"Bugs" Rucker, Ronnie Allen, William"Corn-Bread Red "Burge, Luther "Wimpy" Lassiter, Harold Worst, and Cecil "Buddy" Hall.
Artie's face on the cheese shot, would look like somebody was squeezing his privates with a pliers. Then he would uncork his straight-through, "jerk" stroke, and the big-money ball would drizzle into the pocket.
"Bugs" would stare and stare at the shot, while taking many warm-up strokes. Suddenly he would jump up, turn his cap around backwards, get back down, take one quick stroke, and then whack the ball home.
Ronnie Allen would bring his stake-horse's tension up to fever pitch. He would make sure his backer knew just how tough the shot was. Next, he would get back down on the shot, take a last look over at the trembling stake-horse, and laughingly shout out, "Here we go!" pounding the ball home. It was not easy to play for high-stakes with Ronnie.
"Cornbread Red" liked to bet so high it put a "tremble" in his opponents stroke. Red was another master at shooting off the game ball. When confronted with the big-cheese-money-ball, Red would derisively snort "Haw, haw," in his inimitable style, then he would increase his normally long back stroke about another foot, and slip-stroke the shot in, with dust flying out of the back of the pocket.
Luther "Wimpy" Lassiter would study the key shot, look and look, then powder up with talc, and look some more. Next, he would shoot his cuffs, (reminiscent of Ed Norton's unnerving antics against Bensonhurst pool hall champ Ralph Kramden ) get down, and naturally bring the shot.
Harold Worst would look around disdainfully, trying to make eye contact with whomever may have had doubts that he would bring the shot. Everyone would usually look away. Then he would get down on the table, his bald forehead a shade of beet red, give the object ball a laser-look as if daring it to stay out of the pocket, and then blast it home. Nobody hit the game-ball harder than Harold Worst.
Cecil "Buddy" Hall's concentration would melt the paint on a wall. His slow, methodical, deliberate style was nerve-wracking. He was never careless with a shot. If you were betting on him, and he was shooting at the game ball -- however hard it might be -- you knew you were going to get your money's worth off his effort.

(These biased opinions came from the warped brain of The Beard)

I think that's "Eric Durbin" you're refering to from Middletown Ohio. I've been watching him since he was a kid. He has a beautiful stroke and no fear when he's betting his stakehorses money! Hmmmmm
He does play JAM-UP when he's right, but it's hard to say when he'll be right. I heard recently that he's been having trouble with his "significant other" and may not be playing much.

Another player from the same area that plays really well, "when he's right" is Tommy "Blackie" Stephensen. I gave him the "Blackie" nickname several years ago. His dad is another good "road agent" known as " Middletown Whitey". They are as different as night and day so I felt the nick was appropriate!

just more hot air!

I travelled through Ohio twice in the early 90s. Both times we stopped in Cincinnati and both times I matched up with Tommy. One thing that stands out the most to me was just how incredible Tommy played combinations. He was playing combinations on the nine (when the run out was tough due to clusters) with both balls out near the middle of the table and cutting the nine on the combo. Anytime he got ball in hand, it was like RUH ROH here comes a combo. Some of them I was licking my chops thinking, there is no way hes going make that. After a while of watching the nine rocket into the hole, I stopped thinking such nonsense.

Did anyone mention Tony Ruberto? From what I hear, he's a pretty good gambler and has the cash to put up.

Sdkid

Anyone want to play him? I heard TRex Chohan wanted the first 2 breaks and alternating break after that...must want to keep the kid off the table at least every other game. Heard Gabe Owen didn't want to pay for cheese either.

Tommy got third I think at the DCC in nineball 2 or 3 years ago-He was flawless til he got to the TV table and fell apart. I hear around that time, Corey gambled with him a couple of times and came out the loser both times

I think Frankie plays pretty good for the cash despite what has been said here. T-Rex played him some and when he was borrowing money from 2 World Class Players- He said "this is not even gambling the only way he can win is if i get my eye poked out" I heard Frankie went through him so quick, he wouldnt even play the 2nd set.

This is old news, But, John and Ronnie plated at Fast Eddies 9-ball tour in San Antonio Tx. John gave up 10-7. He lost about 5K.
About 3 months later in San Antonio Vivian beat Ronnie playing even 1p, 1 set for $500.
FYI, John should have won.

Who is "SDKid," Black-Balled?

BTW, I heard it through the grapevine that James Waldon was heading to Mexico several days ago to play Rafael Martinez.

I've seen great players who do just fine on the tournament trail, but get them in the pit playing for big bucks, and they fold like a lawn chair. Some players, though, can play BETTER for the money than they do in a race-to-9 tournament setting.

I think Scott "The Freezer" Frost, Marcus "The Little Napolean" Chamat, Tony "T-Rex" Chohan, North Carolinian Tony Watson, Filipinos Santos and Bustamante, Mississippi's Finest Little John, Alex "The Lion" Pagulayan, Seattle's Harry Platis, and Shannon "The Cannon" Daulton have a demonstrated track record as being "top money players." JMHO, FWIW!

Pookie from Virginia used to be a frequent flyer on the action circuit, but he's now MIA.

JAM

Hi JAM,

You are correct that Harry is/was a big money player, but his track record is pretty dismal. He gave his dough away to just about every road player that hit Platisville. Never took the right spots. Mike would just shake his head and said "If I could manage him and match him up, I could make a lot of money just taking 10%!"

Mr. J, I was just as surprised as you to hear of Wadon traveling to Mexico to play Rafael Martinez. If I hear any further details about Rafael, I'll be sure to post them. In order for Waldon to be willing to travel to Mexico, though, I'd imagine that it's going to be a good match, indeed. Maybe if somebody knows Waldon on this forum, they can call him to confirm if this a "go" AND if Rafael Martinez is doing okay.

BTW, if Rafael is on top of his game, I don't think Waldon has to like it much. JMHO, FWIW!

JAM

Here is a picture of Rafael with Mike Vidas and Stan Tourangeau at a tournament I ran. Can you tell that Rafael won the whole tournament? LOL. Mike Vidas took 2nd and Stan 3rd.

IMO 9ball is a push. JW likes it a LOT playing one hole. A KM vs JW one hole match ???? :)
