Hey Keith and Joey: I've also got great respect for both of you. I really enjoy the opportunity to see you guys locally at the DC area tournaments. It's exciting to see pool played at your level. It's great to see Joey breaking out to another level. Keith, none of this "nonsense" as you call it will have any effect on your U.S. open preparations. You're too seasoned for that! Joey has aired a legitimate issue that came up between you two (and you are saying now, "right, it was between us, so butt out!"). I will, but let me say that I can see myself in Joey's position some day (year) if I'm lucky, pulling out a win against someone of your caliber, who also happens to be an idol, and then have that wonderful feeling crushed by an accusation of cheating or intentional dropping of a match. These are legitimate issues, but clearly Joey does not want anything like this to drive a wedge between you two. But Keith, knowing you want action, you should know the effect of such an experience on potential Action, and friendship. My two cents, and I'll shut up now!
 
I was just wondering if anyone could tell me if the story i heard about keith and kirkwood were true.
 
Edwin Montal is a local player that loves to gamble and will play pretty much anybody. Real good on a bar box and never loses his cool. I heard a while back that Shane Van Boeing would gamble with him if he came to South Dakota, that would be an awesome matchup.

Just from reading the posts I would agree with Mapman that the better players when beaten by someone either new or someone they feel is inferior
to them do lash out and try and belittle the lower rated player. I honest think its solely due to not consciously thinking about what they are saying.
The better pool players in a pool room or on a tour have a bit of a star quality. They are placed a bit on a pedestal and many when beat feel the need to try and remind everyone that the person that beat them should not have. They want to keep their place.
Even the comment by JAM about Keith losing was a slap in Mapmans face.
It was uncalled for. I have seen many players use excuses like this on numerous occassions. If they win all is good but if they lose its always that
their heart was not in it or they menat to lose so that they dont show speed
or any other numerous reasons.
I have only ever beaten one really top player in a tournament even and that
was David Grossman. I played him three times and the first two he killed me but was always nice. The third time I beat him and I thought I had played well but knew that I had gotten some breaks with making the 9 twice on the break and once early for a combo. Thats 3 games of our race to 9.
Afterwards I was fully expecting the challenge to gamble or a open remark about how I had gotten lucky but it never came. All he said was that it looked like I had gotten better and that I had made a really nice out in the last game. with me still being the weaker player and not wanting to piss him off I said that I had gotten lucky and that the 3 early ones were not skill.
I even went as far as to say that I dont play even with him and would not even take the 7 ball gambling. He just looked at me and said that I had beaten him 6 other games other than the early ones and that he did not play well enough to hold me back from winning in that set. It was suprising to me.
Afterwards I thought about what I was telling him about me getting lucky and I started laughing. I ended up saying everything I thought he was going to say. I almost was apologising for winning. He even came and watched my next match which I won against another good player.

Do you think the balls were different then or that playing on Simonis made
a difference on the wing ball going in? or was it racks getting better?
PLayers becoming more observant?
There has to be a reason. I remember the old Mali backed cloth that was thick and slow. In the south you HAD to have a really good stroke to get around the table. Now it seems easier even in humid conditions.

Thanks for the compliment Frank. David Grossman, Julie Kelly and Mike Davis. Now I've heard of three great players that don't lash out when they lose to weaker players.

By the way, the epitome of what we're talking about ocurred in Valley Forge last year. I was playing on a $20 challenge table and doing very well. I ran out some racks on some very good players, a few of them professional. I won't name names here, but one very cocky, very loud pro level player (from some large northeastern city) who was upset and embarrassed because he really couldn't stay on the table started yelling throughout the whole downstairs at Valley Forge saying the following: "There isn't a person in here that can beat me in Last Pocket 8 Ball. Anyone here want to play some $100 Last Pocket 8 Ball? Nobody here has any heart. Nobody can beat me in Last Pocket 8 Ball. Who wants to play? Do you want to play? You? Look at you, you're all scared. Come on, nobody in here can beat me in that game. etc, etc, etc." This literally went on for over a half hour. After he was done, he sat back in his chair with his chest puffed out full of pride. I really believe that to him, that was more of an achievement than winning a difficult match.

For the record, I am not talking about Keith and I have never seen Keith do anything like this.

You got it. I really am rooting for you and Black Balled to meet in the finals of the US Open. Wouldn't that be great? I'm sorry if my concerns caused a setback in your preparations. Have fun in VA tonight. I won't be able to make it myself. As a matter of fact, I'm travelling most of this month for work so you guys might not see too much of me. I do wish you all the best.

I think the SI article said something like $500K for 4-5 years, 30K in one month alone. Who tops that?
