U.S. Open Update

After a week to reflect, Barry, Ken and I got our heads together and talked about what could be done to improve the U.S. Open in 2011. A few things are being considered and some are definite. There will be a new method used to determine the seeded players, not that it was a problem before. Barry is considering expanding to 64 seeds, so all past champions (men and women) plus Hall of Famers can be seeded and not take a seed away from a deserving player.

Another important item is regarding the Hall of Fame banquet and how late it ran this year. It caused us to start matches almost two hours late that evening. That will no longer be the case with the banquet being moved up to a 4-7 PM time frame. That will allow us to start the evening matches at 7:30 PM, so three rounds can be played without going as late as it did this year. On all the other days the evening rounds will start at 7 PM.

Regarding slow play, which can plague a tournament with such a large field and such a tight schedule. There will be designated shot clock people on hand to assist us with any matches that are taking too long. One warning and then the match goes on the clock. That will help immensely. This year there were several slow matches where we didn't have anyone available to handle a shot clock. That put us behind in subsequent rounds.

Also slow racking, meaning taking an unusual amount of time to rack the balls will not be tolerated as well. Playing rack your own, it shouldn't be that difficult to put a good rack up there. Two tries will just about be the limit we will allow. This will also prevent players from doing a little too much "work" on the rack, if you get my drift.

I'm sharing this info with you to let you know that Barry takes the criticism seriously and is being pro-active in trying to make the event better for next year.

Thanks for the update Jay. It's great that Barry, you and others involved with the US Open, are always trying to make this a better tournament.

why would the girls be seeded?
they never won this tourney.

Making the us open better only makes pool and pool players better! Bugs will always have to be worked out. I agree with Bart! Don't want to see any pool player get special treatment! Maybe do away with the 1000.00 top ladies prize. IMHO. You guys did one hell of a job. Thanks for all you do.

Hello Jay,

My only two cents would be to use the MAGIC RACK!!!!!!!!

Racking problem solved.

I know that you will lose the revenue from the "other" company though.

Maybe the trade off is worth it??

Take care buddy..

I remember someone mentioning that you consider changing the break so that the bottom two corners don't count for the 9-ball.

Any decisions on that?

Highly likely next year that will be the case. We all pretty much agree on that one.

Jay put me on the list for running the shot clock if there is any openings, I have done it for years in the APA.--Leonard

I've attended the last 20 US Opens and if you hadn't posted this I might have missed the Open next year because of slow play and taking forever to rack the balls on Saturday. This is great news and thanks for the post......

This year was rack your own vs loser racks in the recent past. The racking times were much better on average IMO. But if you really want to shave rack time and match time, how about using the magic rack and going with alternate breaks? Just a thought...

Is it about endorsement money? Is the cart pulling the horse?

As long as it's going to be rack your own, then Mgic Rack is needed. I don't know how much Delta-13 puts into the tournament but that don't make it the best rack for rack your own. World Championship tournaments around the world are using the Magic Rack and more going to it all the time, with very good results I might add. Johnnyt

I like the Magic Rack myself. Will discuss this with Barry.

Majic Rack

If you are going to have rack your own format, then the majic rack is a must.

I still like my breaking idea. Put one of those "Chug a Lug" metal cage hour glass shaped things on the table that you see at stags with the dice in it. Fill it with all the balls including the CB. Twist it around a few times and open the latch.

ROFL, funny stuff.

Yup! And, how about one of those packing peanuts dumping machines? (You know, the ones with the large funnel with a valved chute at the bottom, that you locate over an open box ready to be packed/sealed, and you pull the handle to fill the box with packing peanuts.) You'd simply wheel this machine over to the table with the funnel located over the center of the table, put the balls into the funnel, swirl them around, and then pull the handle at the bottom of the chute to open it, and the balls randomly dump out onto the table, scattering in different directions.

We can even choose whether to apply Paul Schofield's "No Conflict" rules, i.e. whether or not the "breaker" (the chute-handle-puller, in our case) keeps control of the table whether or not a ball is pocketed on the "break"... I mean... dump. :D

I prefer what I see amateurs do in pool halls everywhere. They take the rack full of balls and just turn it over and dump the balls on the table. Usually from about a foot or two above the bed of the table. I want to kill when I see that!
