Funny but I take the comment "under the radar" to mean "find some person who doesn't know me so I can sucker him/her into a game they have no chance winning". Also known as "Hustling".I believe it is no longer possible to stay under the radar for anyone to make money anymore. The only possibility would be to never play in any league, tournament, or gamble anyone who has a rating already. That would limit you to playing nobodies for life.

First, you could empty all the pockets of even a good pool room and come out with less than a couple hundred bucks. I mean the possibilities are so dismal it's seriously tough to even think about it. That's why we get champions playing each other I think, not because they want to. They probably don't. It's because it is the only way.
Just forget any sort of money making venture when it comes to pool altogether.
I honestly don't think playing very good pool requires too much spare time after the first five or so years of constant play and competition. It's not like you need to be in a pool hall 24/7 to play great pool. We just think that because all the great players are in there that much, but it's really because of their mindset. If my son really wanted to be a pool player I'd let him get past those first five years, and then find a career that isn't so time intensive. There are many small business opportunities that could work well for pool players. But just forget pool as any sort of reliable income no matter how you approach it. Seriously I mean we're talking guys aren't even getting by on top ramen and splitting 40 dollar hotel rooms three ways. Imagine if somebody wanted a retirement fund and a college savings for his kids lol.
Not sure where you're from; BUT, while it definitely is not like it used to be there are still plenty of people with real fat pockets and still many high $$$ dollar action matches. Difference is now the action is between people that know each other, know it's good action ( not shooting a toothpick at a lumber yard etc). And for the record it's much more rare to see " champions " playing each other than otherwise. They would MUCH rather play the guy with a pocket full and spot them the 5 out or 15-4 or whatever.

That's true but thier pockets didn't get fat from pool and most players playing big aren't using thier money. anyway

Are there any unknown jack Cooneys left?
Players bet what they have.., You cant bet big Money if you don't have it. If two backers want to put cash up to see two champs go at it, then let the games begin.
Its always been that way in Pool, Buddy Hall had backers all the time , yet no one doubted his gamble.., Everyone rants and raves about Willie Mosconi, did he ever bet his own?

That gambling ship left the harbor when the Internet came to the fore.![]()
I think that gambling is quite alive in some areas, it is hustling which is almost extinct and I firmly believe it is for the good of the SPORT.![]()
