Update on the Des Moines pool scene

dogs open

Cmon Matt. don't leave us hanging.

how was it. prices ? waitresses ? table rolls ??

gimme a bone !!!

I just peeked in for a while.

Didn't get to play any.

Nice set up -- looks like a better selection of tables - more 9', fewer 7'. Looked like a league area set up and a real fancy kitchen area. Menu looked to have more interesting things to eat -- good for those nights of play where you are hungry.

Didn't check out any prices -- but I'm sure it will be worth while.

I did hear about a streaming table set up. That should be interesting.

Two friends and I made it in last night. About 20 others there.

They're not done with it all yet. They were still stocking the bar, e.g. The sign outside is leaning against the pole, not on top of it yet. Stuff like that.

Twelve 7' Diamonds. Nine 9' Diamonds. The GCs are not there. 6 or 7 barboxes with APA lights over them. The kid area has 4 or 5 boxes and one 9' Diamond.

There's a real nice area with tables and chairs next to the 3 Foosball tables.

My buds HATED the 9' table. They said they didn't want to play on them again as they're "too tight and no fun." I'm not complaining but they sure were! My thoughts are that making it easier now might help repeat biz. I dunno. I'm sure there's lots to do.

Anyway, THERE'S A POOL HALL IN DES MOINES!

I heard they wanted to hang to sign ahead of time but were told they couldn't hang it till they passed final inspection. It sounds like they made them jump through a lot of hoops.

That stonework looks pretty awesome!

The artwork and hanging signs inside are nice, too.

As my friend complained, I said that not everyone would agree with him about the tight setup and pointed to a sign beneath one of the cue racks:

"Everyone is unique, just like everyone else." Not sure if it helped him.

You mean they couldn't just hit the diamond and have it go in like the good ol Loco Joes days lol? Damn them for making people work on their pol games :D!!

Those tables arent Shooters hideaway....lol. I understand their concern. Its like big roller coasters and kid ones. Some like the loops and corkscrews and others just want to casually ride around. Now that they know, there are many options.

I like to practice on tighter equipment to help my game; my friend, who is very good, prefers to practice on looser tables to build his confidence. He said if he wanted to play snooker with big balls he'd do that. (Btw, the snooker table is absent.)

To each his own.

I thought the management might want to know about it, that's why these posts. I'd like to see some of the Diamonds loosened up a little myself so we could choose whatever we want. We looked at the exhibition table and it is even tighter!

He said, "Why setup the tables so only 4 or 5 guys in town can use 'em?"

You guys had better go see for yourselves.

Jeff those are pro cut pockets. I have played on tables a hell of a lot tighter than those. They wouldnt be any fun for the average joe, though. One issue with making them different is if they try to do a big table tournament. One shouldnt worry about which table they get on. Diamonds are good for being consistant. Id rather have them playing tight like you said. It only makes you a better player.

Does anyone know if they will be resuming the same weekly tournies they used to have on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday? And if so, how soon?

They are having a big 500 added free roll on the 28th then announce weekly schedule after

I wouldn't call it jumping through hoops.

Just required to meet the minimum standards to pass the inspection. Which isn't that difficult with the correct installers.

I am not opposed to saving money...... but I would think that the money that was saved on the construction was LOST by not being open sooner. Just my opinion.

The diamond 9 footers are not tighter than normal. They are the same tables as before, not shimmed. I actually thought they played a little loose because of the new felt.

an idea???

Who would like to arrange an AZB Tournament for the Iowa Players at Big Dogs? I woild like to come over for a visit and I know a few others from around here that would too...all AZB'ers. It would be a good way tfor us to all meet. I keep trying at the State Tournaments, but don't get to meet you all.

Anyway, somebody in DM pick up the ball and get something going with Management so we can all get together. Maybe some sort of King of Iowa AZB Tournament. I know that's not what the AZB rules say, but maybe a real AZB Challenge Match would come out of it.

I'll have to come over for a visit sometime. I'm sure I would recognize most of yous guys, but then I could put a face to a name. With my history in the ISPA, someone is always saying "hi Ken", and I'm thinking "who the heck was that?".

How did everybody's ISPA experience go this year? I had a good time. My team got stuck in the Masters Division :(...we are all Open players...and we went 2 & 2...I'm kinda proud of that . Lost to Whitey's team and Hargen's team...gotta expect that though. Didn't lose too unrespectably either. Better next year. We aint gonna just lay down for three years then ask to be reclassified like some losers do. I even heard of one guy that forfeited out in the appropriate round so he wouldn't be moved up...but I also heard that he'll be moved up anyway just because he tried to take advantage of a technicality.

See you at Big Dogs sometime...Ken
