US Open (9 ball) 2024, August 19-24, Atlantic City

Any observed needle or tension between Shaw and SVB? There was definitely some of that, mainly from Shaw, in their World Pool Masters match this year. Today's loss to SVB surely stings for Shaw; hopefully, he was gracious in defeat.

I didn't get to watch the whole match but caught the beginning and end and they looked very cordial at the finish, said something to each other that looked friendly and wasn't the perfunctory split second hand shake you sometimes see from players

Some serious choking going on by both players in the Patsura-Lechner match. Patsura missed an easy shot and gave the table to Lechner, who was on the hill. Lechner then misses the same ball only three inches from the pocket. Patsura ties up the match hill-hill, only to dog another shot in the hill game but Lechner returns the favor and lets Patsura win. Weak sauce by both these guys in the last three games. Gotta like Shane here. Filler should win over David, although Alcaide never gives up and you must beat him. He will not give the match away. I like Ko over Niels, he's playing good right now and could win this thing if his nerves hold up. Gorst is a big favorite over Roda, BUT. Beware of Filipino pool players! They never know or believe they are underdogs. They all grew up playing Champions! Roda will not be in awe and will treat him like just another opponent. Might not be enough, but he could make it exciting.

True no hacks at this point, but I feel Shane has a little something more to prove. Of course we know he doesn't, but that's Shane being Shane. His big win over Fedor and Jayson and filler has been a thorns in his side in the past. The competitive jean popping out and a chance for another US OPEN title...Shane is on a mission.
Oh, this is why svb plays- to win in all the late rounds.

I don't think he cares at all about pool until there are 16 left.

SVB vs. Filler and Gorst vs. Ko Pin Yi would be a helluva semifinal round.

Ok. If anyone is there and heard? They just cut to break but Jason went up to Svb and started talking to him. Any idea what was said. Didn’t look like anything but Svb seemed in the zone and would assume he wouldn’t want to stop and chat😄
I believe Jayson said, "Shoot pool, van Boening," and Shane said, "I'm shootin' pool Shaw, when I miss you can shoot."

Johann has been playing like ass and couldn't break in this format to save his life. Filler also hasn't been playing his game.

Jaden

agree! he's been missing the shots he usually leans his game on.

they discussed the other day that he was a bit under the ice / cold. he could be coming off it and play better going forward. did that at the china open last year, struggled through the tournament but was healthy the final day

Last 4 of SVB, Filler, Gorst, Ko would be dream semifinals. Probably strongest last 4 in a WNT major. All top 5 Fargo, all top 15 Matchroom ranking, all with multiple majors.
Now SVB and Ko on best form of the 4. Gorst starts on fire but fumble to cross finish line in his matches though his opponents are tougher than the others. Filler struggling the most not at his best but still eke out wins his matches- he is most dangerous as he still can peak.
As we saw with Johann Chua in recent European Open final, form can be temporary and change in matter of hours :ROFLMAO:

Of cos, first they have to win their quarterfinal later today. And we know there are usually party crashers for eg. someone like Roda 😆

Shaw was super gracious in defeat. He knows he needs to ramp it up for the Mosconi.

Why does Shane not play like this in the Mosconi?
It's just a different level of pressure. It's a huge deal to fans and everyone and their dog knows that Shane has to play well to give USA a shot. I think this coupled with Shane's obvious social anxiety/issues is a recipe for errors here and there.

The European team is a bunch of monsters, even if he plays up to his ability, it is pretty much a toss-up with all of the European Mosconi guys.

Maybe all that. To me, Shane looks bored playing in races to five. I don't think he considers races to 5 in 9 ball much of a measure of skill.

That might be what he would say, but that is a pretty lame/sorry excuse. It’d be one thing if it was race to 5 on easy equipment and it was runout city, but especially these last few years it has been tactical battles with several innings in most racks. Shane slow-rolling and dogging that hanger last year in the opening team match last year was not boredom. It was nerves

Neils is still under that radar, playing well 4-4. I dont think he’s been on the main tv table yet?
