US Open Bounced Checks?

Fatboy said:
well since the internet seems to expose everything-I bet the checks cash faster in the future, see I have long known about this, its been going on for many many years, I said nothing because It wasnt my biz, I have onlt affirmed what has been saids here today. I could add to it but I wont-noy my biz.

now that its public knowlege because the internet is so powerful it will most likely change things in the future, additionally all the players that are contenders to win this tournment knew about this ahead for time-to them its common knowlege, and probably a handful of us who cant win it know. I didnt hear it from my one friend who can win it, i heard this elsewhere, but i never said anything as ins not my problem, and AGAIN BARRY HAS AWALYS MADE GOOD. All the top guys know each other real good and talk all the time, the internet just exposed whats been common knowlege among a few people. Na harm No foul.

Well, IPT has paid the players from the Reno-tournament in full now... Is KT as good as BB then?

I just can't understand how people can defend BB but complain about other people who do the same, like Yen Makabenta now and KT earlier...

I am actually shocked that the players accept this kind of behaviour...

When the players have been quietly accepting this for years, well, then I do not feel sorry for them if they get stiffed in future tournaments. I can't believe what I am reading here...

I am done trying to help poolplayers and to keep topics like this alive... When the players don't seem to care, they don't deserve better.

if you got lucky

That's fine, but the real question here is:

Can it happen to the players in the future? Shouldn't they know about this before the tournament starts?

Say that if I get real lucky, win the lottery and can dedicate myself to pool 16 h a day, and when US Open happens next year I win it. Will BB then ask me: Is it ok that you get paid in 2010, in April?

Well, Roy, if you won the lottery, you would probably say it's ok for him to pay you later or whenever.........

I agree Roy. If this has been going on for years...why should any of us bother. I'm done with it and I'm done staking any players. It's one thing for them to get stiffed, but if I might get stiffed staking them...forget about it. Johnnyt

Just guessing here....

...but maybe it's the 33 years he's been doing this. Ya think!?!

If Barry always makes good (or as close to good as he can) then I don't think you can call it stiffing the players.

Barry's no dummy, neither are the players who play in the US Open these days. The players are very vigilant (as are we internet railbirds) and Barry knows he's being watched.

He'll be hosting another US Open next year and will have a full (or close to it) field of players that know they will be paid - eventually.

KT and YM are birds of VERY different feathers and the comparison is unfair.

I am not saying that BB will stiff them in the future, but when the players accept this behaviour, then why should I bother to care for them if other promotors starts to do the same?

How can you say that YM are different from BB? If YM makes everything good before April 09, he has done BETTER than what BB did last year, imo...

As long as players doesn't complain about late payment, it will continue to happen.

Today I called and texted with several of the pros in Europe, asking them if they have got paid or not for the World Ten Ball. I am doing this because I think that if we can get this info out to the public, they will get paid faster by Yen. I am trying to help them.

I will however not call them again. Not in this case, or in any other tournament. I just don't care anymore... The players deserve to handle this their own way, and that is to accept to be treated as garbage... When the players start to care, then I'll do my best to help them again.

I think I just lost a big interest in pro-pool...

For 33 years BB has been putting money in the players pockets longer than anyone else around. He has made good on every open and all he ever gets is BS from a few who havent done a F'in thing for pool but ***** about how things are done. It's funny how all these players come back every year from all over the world to play even though they are getting stiffed???. Shane didn't have a problem with it so nobody else has any right to complain. BB aint perfect but I dont see anyone else NEW stepping up and throwing a tournament even close to the size of the open. Pool has been a hard sell to any sponsor out there and in any sport there are dirty little secret(steriods, drugs, betting on games) but stirring up BS about the us open isn't going to help.

well, I have promoted lots of tournaments, being organizer, promoter and tournament director in tournaments with players such as Ralf Souquet, Thorsten Hohmann, Mika Immonen, Oliver Ortmann, Darren Appleton, Niels Feijen, Roberto Gomez etc, paid out ten thousands of $$ in pricemoney, had several tournaments on live tv and internet-broadcasting, had dozens of articles in newspapers, live interviews on radiostations etc.

I think I know a thing or two about tournaments and how they are supposed to be run.

I don't like what I read in this thread, and I voice my opinion.

I have never played in the US Open, but I will try to do one time. But that doesn't stop me from meaning that what BB is doing is wrong. I don't care if it is the best tournament, there is obviosuly room for improvement and I can't understand that you can't see that...

You have never heard of a great player bashing Barry? How many great players do you know? I know lots of World Champions, and many more of the great players, and I can tell you that I have heard many of them talking bad about BB. The thing is that they won't say it in public. And I haven't even asked them about this issue about late payments...

I have no interest in organizing tournaments in US, and not in Europe anymore either. (honestly I can't see the reason for my opinion not being worth as much since I have done tournaments in Europe but not in US.) For many different reasons I figured out that it was not what I wanted to do, and now I am using my time on pool with following the pro-tournaments + practise pool. I enjoy pool much more now than I did before.

I wish BB and the US Open all the best in the future, and I hope he can continue doing tournaments for the next 20 years, but I REALLY hope he can pay the players immidiately after the tournament. What's wrong in wanting that, and saying it loud?

Can you name one of these tournaments that you promoted with at least 1 or 2 of the above big names in it and what the winner received and where and when was it held and how many were in it ???

I put guys in the box and I would be pissed off if I had to wait 7 months for my money.

This is bullshit. A tournament should pay out immediately.

I don't care if Barry has been putting on a good show for 33 years or not. It's a tarnish to hear that it's well known among players that they are going to have to wait for the money if they win the US Open. I am with Roy though.

I am done caring about it.

From now on this is my last post on the state of professional pool. I will watch whatever matches come on through streaming, buy some TAR and other streams but from now on I could care less about the financial or mental well being of any one who chooses to be a professional player.

Last night I won a small local tournament here in China. I had to play pretty good to get there. I completely appreciate the enormous mental and physical challenge it is to play high level pool. To do it under the cloud of possible non-payment or delayed payment makes it more incredible.

But that's their cross to bear. Either they will continue the status quo and leave their fate in the hands of promoters on the edge or they will come together to change it.

Either way I am going to settle down and enjoy good pool when I can and not worry about it.

Everybody is entitled to there opion. But pool in USA is alot harder to promote than anywhere else in the world. Its not a big sport although there are numerous articles to say other wise, but there is little sponsorship from any major company and that was before the economy when bust. There's football, basketball, baseball, tennis, golf, soccer, even table tennis has better sponsorship:smile: (kiddin). Why dont you start the European OPEN next year and we will send 8 players who will be seeded in seperate brackets so they cant possibily meet until the money rounds (if you say no we aint coming:grin:,just like BB who was told to do)

I am sorry to hear the comments like 'I don't care about pool or the pool players anymore'. Because some of us do try to do what we can to make the industry grow and get better. (Especially from valued AZB contributors like JB and Roy.)

It is easy for others to point fingers and say things should have been done differently - but sometimes that just does not happen.

As many know, I have done a LOT of events - and paid ALL OF THEM in full immediately. That is how it should be done. But promoting a pool event is a very tough gig.

I appreciate all who do promote pool - but all of this naysaying is just going to make it harder for all promoters and sponsors to survive. I firmly believe players need to be paid - but lets try to 'mellow out' a little and everyone needs to calm down and try to fix the problem in a more gentle manner.

Between this and the WTBC threads, it even gives me a headache. I respect a person who is passionate about an event, but there is a limit.

Please lets try to be a little more objective-after all we are all supposed to be on the same side.

Can you picture the announcers on ESPN saying - "Here is Mika, 2008 US Open winner. Can't you just see the smile on his face as he is so happy that 7 months of waiting from now he will be $40,000 richer."
