US Open vs Challenge of Champions conflict

There seems to be a conflict between the U.S. Open and the Challenge of Champions and some great players may be caught up in it.

Per news items on the AZ front page, Darren Appleton, Shane Van Boening, Dennis Orcollo and Mike Dechaine are all scheduled to be at the Challenge of Champions on 10/23 through 10/25. However, we would all expect them to be at the U.S. Open on 10/21 through 10/27.

Obviously, these players can not be in both places at one time. Are they blowing off the Open in favor of the Challenge of Champs? Isn't the Open one of the major tournaments that gets players into the Challenge of Champs? The dates of the Open have been set for quite some time. What were the organizers of the Challenge of Champs thinking?

Somebody has made a grave error in scheduling.

Yes, I posted a thread about this a few days ago. Seems pretty ridiculous to me. I assume all of these guys were planning on playing in the Open, so maybe they could just move the Challenge of Champions to Virginia this year and schedule matches for these guys so there is no overlap? That is a GREAT COC line up by the way- maybe the best ever

man worst news i have ever got. I hope they work on it. I think the masters have less players they should postpone theirs...

I guess winning 50k against 3 other players sounds better than competeting against 255 for 40k.....

If I were a pro in this situation I wolud go with COC

In another thread someone reported that at least one player planned to commute to the COC for one day and arrange to get a schedule fix for the Open. I think that's the best solution. I suspect there will be whining about favoritism if in fact players get open time for the COC. The message implied that the men were scheduled for just one day in Connecticut.

Talking to Shane

Yesterday on the way to the NDSU football game Shane said he is flying up to play the Challenge and then flying back to the Open in between matches. I assume the Open is making it work out for them as far as scheduling is concerned. I am sure that is what the others are doing also. What a pain for him and the others. I agree that is terrible timing.

I'm co-TD of the Open and have known about this for some time now. We have agreed to give them one a half days off the schedule, with NO guarantees! If all four players are still in the winners bracket after two rounds of play it should be no problem. If they are on the losers side it could present a problem to hold their next match for that long. We will see, that is a choice they have all made.

Who's at fault for this scheduling conflict? Meaning, who was on the schedule first? It seems like it would easier to move the COC considering the small # of players involved- is it still only 4 players? Wasn't it 8 in the past?

I'm sure they'll be given byes and a free pass to come 2 days late. They won't have to attend the mandatory players meeting like the rest of the players. Lucky them. They save on expenses and get to play in two events. It's a nice deal for them, not so nice for the other schmucks required to pay all the expenses of attending the Open 7 calendar days.

But masters is held in Kielce, Poland,

Hmm. Maybe the promoter for the Challenge event doesn't communicate with the other pool promoters.

Maybe he doesn't care, either.

I'm sorry westcoast. I didn't see your thread.

A few facts/clarifications.

The 3 days at Mohegan Sun are 3 separate 1-day events. The men's International Challenge of Champions (involving Appleton, SVB, Orcollo, and Jung Lin Chang) is on Tuesday, 10/23. The women's International Tournament of Champions is on Wednesday, 10/24. The men's World Cup of Trick Shots (which includes Dechaine) is on Thursday, 10/25. So none of the guys you mentioned has to be in Connecticut for three days.

I though it has not been 50k for many years, 25k now maybe?

The International Challenge of Champions was an 8-man event with a $50,000 winner-take-all prize through 2008. Since then it has been a 4-man event with a $25,000 winner-take-all prize.

Based on what I said above, and what Jay Helfert said in another post, I think you'll see that your comments are not accurate.

Thank you for the clarification.

I hope Mike Dechaine has a private jet that can fly him back and forth to enable him to compete in both events simultaneously. :grin-square:

I didnt think there were ever 2 Americans in the COC.

I think that Shane and Darren seemed to have worked something out. Chang Jung Lin and Dennis are not committed attendees at the Open. So I guess this furore will just blow over soon.

Mike is not in the COC but he is in the trickshot event, He probably didn't want to turn that down in case it counted against him getting a future COC invite. Plus he comes from around those parts so could expect a good local following in Mohegan Sun.

He is taking a calculated risk with his Mosconi Cup points and will be hoping that non Americans will fill the business end of the US Open.
