This is my current playing cue. In just a few months the threads are gettin progressively tighter. Right now the last two turns are very snug. You can see in the pictures that the there is gray deposits in the wood threads buth the pin appears to be clean and bright. The only time the cue is out of my case is when I am using it. I do not use joint protectors.

I am curious about what is causing this and what I can do to get it back to the original fit?

looks like it might be a build up of dust/dirt. maybe use a q-tip and try and rub it off?

I'd also try cleaning it with a moist cotton bud. Should get some dirt out. And then maybe use joint protectors :-)
 
I'd be very careful adding any wax. As tight as the joint is....if you add wax I've seen it cause the wood to crack. Whats happened is there is a piece of trash imbedded somewhere in the shaft threads. It can be a tiny piece...will still make it very tight to snug up. I'll be glad to fix it for you no charge if you'd like. I simply need to run the tap in & out once. If you'd prefer to fix it yourself then you'll need a brass pistol bore cleaning brush from say Walmart....9mm/.45acp will work fine. Twist the brush in until it hits bottom and twist it back out. You can rub just a very small bit of Vaseline on the brush first if you'd like. That will fix it 99% of the time. If its still too tight then you'll need to let me take a look at it.:)
 
If it was mine I'd bend a paper clip or something like it(a brass bore cleaning brush LOL) to go around the threads to loosen that blue crap up. Then blow it out with a air-can or airhose. Johnnyt

The dirtier and smokier the room you play in the more likely for that to happen. I would follow Kevin's advice. If you do not want to buy the brush you can use a bent paper clip to clean the threads, I have done that in the past. I have also seen the shaft of a Kersenbock cue split when someone tried to put wax in the threads to as they "tighten it up a little".

Personally I think the cue is defective and you should send it to me immediately, sweet cue.

Your problems are caused by expansion or by dirt in the threads. It however, it is most likely expansion though. This is normally caused by a higher moisture content in the area you live in. In fact I have seen cue develop a wobble when taken to a very dry climate like Las Vegas and go back to normal when returned home in a very short time.

If I were you I would not send the cue back to MR. Varney because the problem could occur again when the cue is returned because of the reasons outlined above. I would find a local cue builder or repairman in your area and have him run a tap through the threads, this way the environmental conditions will remain stable.

I also agree that wax is not the answer, because with this expansion it could over stress the threads and crack the shaft or break the threads which cause an insert to be placed in the shaft.

I am pleased to report that one pass with a 9mm bore brush, as Kevin suggested, did the trick.

Thanks for all the responses. I live in the Mid-West and we do have our share of humidity. I am also going to go back to using joint protectors.
