I did an analysis of SpiderWebbComm's 39 ball run - it's very entertaining - and avaliable to view on Google and Veoh -

Let me know what you think...

39 Ball Run Reviw - Veoh - 29 Minutes

39 Ball Run Review - Google - 29 Minutes

The Veoh version is better video quality

There is some problems with the video at the end of the run - nit sure what happened there - plus you guys get here my raspy voice (as a result of my Parkinson's Disease - it comes and goes)

Thanks to Dave for being brave enough to allow me to post this up for everybody to watch and listen as I tear into his game apart -

Yes - this is the video with the cat!

:p

Dave,

That is brilliant. A fantastic teaching tool!

What editing software are you using and how do you edit balls as an overlay?

Thanks Colin.

All I use is Photoshop to edit the still photos.

I use Windows Movie Maker, sometimes I use Muvee Producer for the dvd projects. Very basic stuff, although extremely time consuming.

I've had a lot of practice doing this, and I've learned everything about it the hard way ... lol

I am glad you enjoyed it.

Yes, very time consuming. I could do it that way, but it sure takes a lot of work. I thought you must have found some software than made it easy. lol

Do you do the audio last in one take?

btw. Discovered the other videos you've done on Veoh. I might learn how to play 14.1 yet

In this one, I did the audio in 3 parts - rack one & 2 - then I did rack 3 - then I put together the ending on another track.

I use a program called Wavepad to do the audio - or I use Audacity. The audio capabilities of the other programs is far too limited to do something like this, or to do the commentary that you will hear on the other videos.

Just so you know, Colin - the part of the clip where you see me editing the balls to show how I would have shot that sequence - that took only minutes to do in photoshop. I think I was able to put together that entire sequence in less than a half hour. The more you do it, the easier it gets.

Blackjack .. I just wanted to post and say to you that this concept of reviewing a run and replaying it with edits through a video editing program is nothing short of a FANTASTIC training method!!!!

This not only allows long distance training to many more people, but IMHO it does something even more important. It removes the trainer's natural tendency to want to stop the player and correct them along the way during their run, which I feel is an extremely counter productive method that too many trainers use too often. It also helps quell the students nerves so they can perform more naturally.

Micro-dissecting a run shot by shot, stopping the player can never result in the trainer seeing the actual way a player plays. Your method shown here is wonderful!

Using this type of remote review and teaching, the student is able to maintain concentration, and be much more comfortable in their own game style (be it good or bad) and then display the end result to the trainer for a much more thorough and tempered review.

Runs are not even necessary for these reviews. The players can shoot, and when they miss, they can move the cueball and proceed from that point. A request of 50 pocketed balls before ending the tape and submitting it to the trainer, is IMO a great gauge to their play.

You could also ask for three or four standardized shots to be made prior to the run attempts. For example, the student can place 3 balls on the bottom rail, cue ball being the center ball, have the student shoot up to the other short rail and back again between the two balls to where the CB started. Perhaps a force follow stroke, a long draw stoke. Wow, there are so many training options available in addition.

I don't know why this has never dawned on me as a training process, but again, I want to say that this is not only a good option, it's an exceptionally good option. GREAT STUFF! GREAT STUFF!!!!

thanks for sharing!!!!!

Fantastic

Blackjack,
I too wanted to say you did great job with this!
Regards,
Hal

I gotta admit, I was super impressed with what BJ did. He was like, "Hey, do you want me to commentate your video?"

I was like, sure, why not?

Next thing ya know, it's like ESPN mark-up and all. I couldn't believe it. As embarrassing as it is having people look at my joke of a run, it's worth it just so people can see what BJ can do! This weekend I'll get another run recorded and send that away. I think I'm gonna have to create a new line item in my monthly budget: REMOTE BJ COMMENTARY

Thanks, Dave. Super work.

I totally agree with 3andstop. Excellent, excellent tool. I enjoyed it a lot. You're choices as a video editor were brilliant. I hope this is just the beginning. A lot of work went into this, and I appreciate the professional result.

I would suggest that whoever videotapes themselves for this purpose, try to do so at the highest camera angle possible. I think there were a couple of suggestions that I didn't quite get, not necessarily because Blackjack was mistaken, but probably because the shot angles are hard to decipher from such a low camera angle.

But I loved it. And Dave, very cool for you to allow this reaming. Blackjack really tore you a new pool hole. But obviously it was done in good fun and to smack the nonsense out of your straight pool game. I actually laughed out loud during this. I want some more. Someone send in another video fast. I'm too scared to do so myself.

Blackjack, I'd also love to see some video of you some time. Or maybe live. Are you headed to the World Straight Pool event up here in Jersey?
Thanks for the great video.

Thanks for the great video.

Both BJ and JoeT have given me the same advice... take your time and assess everything. I know I zone out a LOT playing and only shoot the obvious-- which keeps me from getting bigger runs more often. The next video will have a bigger run and much better patterns. I learned a lot from this.... I watched it 3x or so and my mind is ticking on my errors already. It's worth the reaming because there has to be someone my speed watching this and learning the same stuff. I'll take one for the team any day.

14.1

What a fine way to present and explain some very sound straight pool principles.
There is so little straight pool played these days, at least by me, it's a pleasure to see something like this.

Hopefully, there will be more to come; unless they are already out there and I just haven't seen them.

Also, I really liked the synopsis near the end highlighting each of the important tips and reinforcing those points.

Thanks Blackjack for an outstanding 14.1 instructional tool.

TWO THUMBS UP:

Great job. I realy enjoyed the video. These principles make alot more sense on video. Great tool, Thanks.

SW<---off to get a video camera

Dave, your a brave soul to put it out there for the world to see! Blackjack was spot on with all his commentary as usual, and what I liked most is it wasn't sugar coated! :D There was nothing harsh, but all the explanations were well put and easy to understand.

I have been playing 14.1 for 20 years, and trust me, you are not far from running big numbers, you just need a few sessions with a high ball runner to open up your eyes to easy 100's so to speak.

Just tonight I was in my basement working on patterns when my wife came down and asked who I was talking to. I explained I was working out end rack patterns. She said....your cue isn't even screwed together?!:D.....then I showed her I was throwing balls out and talking myself through the best way out....luckily my wife is a player, and knows the game!.....but I still got a hard time about it:o

maybe I can video some of my end rack practice and put it up for review from the world....great stuff Dave and BJ....

Gerry

I just want to thank you guys. This could be part of a DVD. Great stuff guys, makes me wish I could shoot straightpool.

Thanks,

Pete

This is very cool, David.

Perhaps you could do this for people for a fee, although I am sure it is very time consuming for you.

I'm yet to watch it, only started downloading, but I would like to thank Blackjack for his great effort in video- and audioediting, and in educating especially! I'm impatient to watch that new approach you guys mentioned here... Prolly it will force me to tape some of my modest runs :grin-square:

Nice job and I learned alot watching it.

One comment to Spider and Blackjack.... you mention at the end of rack two to shoot the 7 and stop for the ball in the corner and then the four.
Spider kind of drew back between them and hit the 6 (corner ball) then shot the four in the bottum corner.
Could you have shot the 7 in and stopped????
It did not appear so in the video. and if not what would have been the shots to the break ball? I thought he was going to slowly stun over into the break ball leaving the shot in the corner but I couldnt tell.

Oh yeah that Cat was priceless !!:D

Reminded me of years ago my buddy who was a struggling golfer hit a great shot on a short par 3 to within maybe 2 feet. He was high fiving and all of a sudden a squirell ran about 50 years and scooped up the ball taking it to the woods :D I thought we were going to laugh forever.
Even another foursome was within us watching. They were all over 60 and I thought one of them might pass out or worse from laughing.

Thats funny, it reminded me of the joke when God and St. Peter went out to play golf. God hit the drive, it hit a tree, bounce over to another where it landed in a squirrel's nest. The squirrel grabbed the ball, ran over to the hole and dropped it in.

St. Peter looked at God and said, did you come here to play golf or show off?
