Best out of 9 going to 15 would be thoughts. Johnnyt
Seems like that would be exciting. Thanks for casting your vote.

I yhink the modern rules are funny and border ridiculous.Bar table eight ball has the perfect amount of congestion and traffic. At a high level of play, eight ball on a nine footer with BIH is boring. All scratches should be shot from the kitchen and on the break shot if you make a stripe you must shoot stripes and vise versa. One should never be able to pocket a ball and call safe. If ya make a ball from both ball groups open table. Many rule changes were due to Coinage and speeding up LEAGUE play. Eight on the break should also be in play, as it is with rotation games. With this format one should also have winner break.
Current eight ball rules that are intended to speed up play are league designed and good for their business model, but in real eight ball competition, rules should not of evolved to where they are at. Thank god leagues haven't got ahold of one pocket and changed that.
Imagine if 14.1 came back into the mainstream, and someone incorporated BIH to speed it up, that would ruin the game.
Reminds me when the Original Fudge sickle ice cream bar was prevalant, which was a perfectly frozen, munch able ice cream/ice bar that changed. Now its gone, no one liked it. Someone wanted it Creamier, but society didn't. Why they didn't go back, who the Frick knows.
I get what you are saying, but if that's the case, it isn't much of a test for a player that gets out to a substantial lead. Any of these is a test of something, so it just depends what you're going for. I think a series of short sets would be more interesting to watch and would still be a good indicator of the better player.Race to 80
If you get stuck there is no one to save you
Like being able to start a new set

I voted race to 80. By true test I assume you mean a test to see who the better player is? I think in a race to 80 the better player wins. In multiple short races the weaker player can get hot and maybe win a couple sets.
This.
You can lose the first 3 sets by one game and your opponent is up 3-0, rather than 45-42.
Eight ball is NOT supposed to be a run out game. One pocket is Not a run out game. Straight pool is a ''run the table'' game, but if ya only get 149-0 and your opponent is at the table, you may lose. Rotation games and alternate breaks are realistic and work. Bank pool was ALWAYS played by banking a ball and calling the pocket, but NEVER allowing kisses/combinations or air shots to count as a Bank. Changing the root of these games is dangerous to the disciplines.
I voted 'best of 9 races to 15'....
...as a spectator, far more interesting.
...as a side bettor, FAR more interesting
...as a player, no problem, it's long enough that if you get beat...you got BEAT.
One caveat....I would like it to be last-pocket.
