After all the crap I’ve heard about guys matching up now a days I can see in the near future someone asking the other player to sign a contract with the rules of the game and money. Maybe someone can make up a form of everything that has happened or could happen in the game. Each rule has a little box to check. Of course the next thing after that will be to bring your own lawyer with you to the match.

Things were a lot easier when you brought a big nutcase along with you or just carried a gun and everyone knew you would use it. Johnnyt

Yup, in my case it was a "little" nutcase, like in Goodfellas, he carried the gun, and everyone knew he'd use it......;) an I agree with you.....

Times did used to be more simple. We would refer to match up's as an "Oklahoma Guarantee", either you did or didn't do it, not so much barking and fanfare. If you didn't adhere to your agreement, well 'nuff said. It's crazy, everyone used to match up from a quarter a game to hundreds depending on the participants. Now no one will match up if they don't know you.

I don't think gambling risks are much different than in the past, cept for integrity nowadays has dramatically diminished:

Matchin' up is business, how one goes about their business will always be an issue. How about or political mess, its in print yet doesn't seem to matter. Your either deal with someone you want to do business with or take a risk with someone who seems and is probably a high risk, its always your choice with no one to blame but the one in the mirror.

I got a vivid reminder of why I don't play pool for money a few weeks ago.

I was goofing around with a guy I know for $5 a rack. I was up $10 and he started to lose interest, but comes over and tells me that this other guy wants to play me. I didn't know the other guy but I said OK anyway.

I immediately asked, "so what are we playing? Call pocket or call shot?" He says we'll just call pocket. Ok says I, and on the fourth straight win, I kissed the eight off of one of his balls and pocketed it. He looks at me and says "you know you lost that right? You have to call the shot on the 8 ball".

Needless to say the pool room manager had to come over and prevent an altercation. Seriously, who makes up rules after the fact?

I don't play for money now....ever. I just want pool to be about fun.

I understand what you are saying, sometimes it isn't worth the hassle. I've never been a road player but I suspect some road players and hustlers if they knew they were better that their opponent and could take his money would have said nothing and continued to play, the theory being that the best way to punish an idiot like that is to take all of his money.

post after post after post of how difficult it is to match up....

this guy wouldn't pay
that guy sharks like crazy
he did this
she did that
blah, blah, blah, blah, blah

Look, wanna match up and have ABSOLUTELY no problems whatsoever?

EASY - lose. Everytime you play - LOSE! Pay up, and play again....

REPEAT until you have lost all that you have. Your opponents will thank you, and you'll never have problems finding a game, as long as you lose. :p

Great, now I know who's been stealin' all my action!!:groucho::slap:

Most of my action was circa middle 60's to middle 80's.
Bad guys to gamble with tended to get no action or trapped.
The game-making tended to be spirited but poetic and humorous.
The stories should have been on SNL.
Modern game-making has a lot of nit-picking and loud sound systems
competing with the conversation.
No wonder the action junkies went elsewhere.

Don't forget that in the past there was no Internet.

If you thought word spread fast back then, now it is instantaneous. Cell phones, text messages, email, web forums, chat rooms.....

No doubt this has altered the gambling culture a bit. A gambler needs to be a bit more careful. I'm not just referring to the authorities, but mostly about reputation, perception and relations. The rumors are more rampant and instant now.

Anything you do is seen and known all over.

Makes players more careful, more hesitant.
