Water-based Auto Clear

Is anyone here using the water-based Auto Clear products? Not the regular water based finishes, specifically the auto clear ones. If so, how are they and which ones are you using? I have done a bunch of searching on here but haven't found anything specifically to the WB auto clear.

I saw Mark Worman using water based PPG Plum Crazy Purple base coat on Graveyard Cars on TV.

I am not sure if the clear coat was water based? Check with PPG.

Last time I talked with the body shop they told me that just the base colour coats were water based and the clear was still solvent.

I have that .
It's a single parter .
And it's supposed to get really hard.
It's not water based. Afaik only color paints are wb.
Being in Nazifornia, I asked around. I asked body shops and auto painting teachers.

This one smells pretty nasty though. I brushed it on to test it on a sneaky.
It did get hard. And unlike water clear Enduro, it sticks to synthetics too.
It has no haze. It might not be a bad sealer before epoxy coat and clear.

I have a lot of single component and plural component formulas

I just licked my Air Bubble problem on my Phenolic.

The whole water based paint thing is a sham.

Everybody thinks they are saving the environment with water based paints, but in reality it really isn't all that different.

The old "Two Stage" as its known is a standard non catalyzed pigment coat with a catalyzed, usually urethane, clear coat. The old pigment coats don't have any of the nasty volatile compounds or isocyanates. They are all in the clear.

The new environmentally friendly "water based" process replaces the pigment coat with a water based paint, but still uses the nasty clear coat.

Lately, it seems as though many people don't actually care about doing good, only looking like they are doing good.

The statement highlighted bold rings so true. It reminds me of the Ivory interstate commerce ban proposal. It won't save even one elephant, but I bet they really pat themselves on the back for saving thousands of elephants if they pass it.

It also reminds me of the government stopping ministries from giving out sandwiches to the homeless, because they were not prepared in a licensed kitchen. Better to make them starve than take a chance on one getting food poisoning.

Dropping a cup of Universal clear in my shop(and on my bare foot nonetheless) reminded me of when I worked in a body shop and on boats with no protection. A migraine and nausea for most of the night.

I wear sandals nearly all the time...

Yeah it seems only Europe and Canada have access to any products right now. I did search PPG and they have one, but after watching the video, I realized it won't work. It needs to be baked....that's an issue with cues..lol.

Joey, that stuff sounds very dangerous.....and a real pain to use. Have you tried sanding/buffing it?

Tom, I read the info in the link you provided, it sounds interesting. Can I call you for more info? Like how ell it flows out, and sanding/ buffing info.

I get very confused with all the VOC info and crap. I am a simple guy, like, does it go one easy without exploding, and killing all my neighbors, sand well, and buff out easy and to a high shine.

I retired (or tried to). Phones for me are rough, 87% Hearing Impaired. I have to drive 5 hours for meetings because on a conference call all I say is "What". I am scheduled to be out there in about a week. I will see about doing a YouTube Video.

I am not a cue maker but worked with finishes for over 35 years. Scratch resistance would be my first guess. I used to spray yachts with Awlgrip and that stuff was incredible. I believe it was originally used for planes and trains, they may have some clear products if someone wanted to spend the time looking.

I have tried quite a few waterbased finishes and found them to be lacking either hardness or shine or both when finished. I figured that the WB made for cars would have better buffability, and durability and still be safer than solvent based clear. I am now playing with GF High Performance WB gloss, with a crosslinker, as it has UV stabilizers. Will be sanding and buffing in a day or two on the test pieces. I am also now recovered enough from my surgery that I am able to spend time playing with my spray setup. I finally got my compressor down the stairs...lol.

Most auto clears have UV inhibitor.

I am not sure if floor clear has that or not but I would think it should have it.

Finishes with out UV protection might make a cue look like an old school Muecci years down the road.

haha............ good point.............

what I use has UV inhibitors and is hard as a rock.......... no one has shown any wear from shooting pool....
