seeing the armor all thread reminded me of this. i like to take wd-40, put a small amount on a rag, and wipe down my shaft with it.seems to make it slick, which i like. anybody else ever tried this?

bad idea!

WD-40 is a petroleum distillate and penetrates the skin readily. A good idea to avoid getting it on bare skin at all. Constant contact with it on a shaft can't be a good idea. Another issue I have with WD-40 for many applications is that it gets gummy over time.

No idea if it would work but I have to wonder about PAM. It is slick and I presume safe. No idea what the shelf life of your shaft would be though!

PAM?? WD-40????
Good god say it isnt so!!!!!!!!!!!

Buy yourself some Micro mesh. 1,500-12,000 grit. There are any number of good sealers and cleaners on the market. I generally use Cuetec and a one by American Cowboy Billiards.
But for gods sakes stay away from vegitable and penetrating oils!!! If you want an oil, Shark oil was the old standby.
Becareful what you use. You could end up stripping the finish off your cue if you are not carefull as well.

Dont be afraid to experiment but keep it in the bounds of reason.

Actually back to square one

I have tried a few wonder slickums marketed for cue shafts and have went back to square one, a finely sanded and burnished shaft, with or without cue wax.

Yup.
Keep it clean and burnished. You cant go wrong there.

I once read in the "Science of Pocket Billiards" using lighter fluid worked well. I must admit I tried it and it didn't hurt..... Now I use the micromesh to burnish as needed. First I use denatured alcohol and the Magic Eraser. Take a microfibre cloth to wipe the shaft down to remove the Magic Eraser dust. Next I use any number of products ranging from the lighter fluid, slipstic, teflon spray, etc to seal the shaft. Finally burnish using a piece of leather or cardboard. Now I finish off using the micromesh.

Now that I have a repair lathe things work out even better. NOTE: I have used a shaft spinner (crutch tip attached to drill to spin the shaft) with good results while burnishing the shaft.

I would say anything you put on your shaft should wipe on and wipe off quickly or dry quickly to prevent too much penetration. Nothing worse than your shaft getting too sticky.

Finally while playing and after playing I wipe my cue down with a microfiber cloth. Now I maybe do this routine every couple of months or before a major event/tournament.

You put WD40 on your shaft, then put your hands on the shaft, then put the balls in your hand to rack them. hmmm. I bet it gets real interesting playing you.

not exactly. i put a small amount on a paper towel, wipe the shaft down thoroughly with a dry rag. the wd-40 doesnt touch anything else.

the only time I would put a petroluim based product on my shaft is if I was trying to start a fire. :)

I agree..i have been using WD-40 for many many years but would never put it on a delicate wood finish like a pool cue....As HU stated it is a a petroleum distillate and it will eventually eat thru your finish..It MAY not affect a Polyurethane finish that badly...but if you have a $100.00 cue then it may work for you.i would not want it on my bare skin either on a regular basis..

Old people have used WD 40 for arthritis for years and I have tried it on a sore shoulder by rubbing it into the joint and it helps some, But I'm kinda crazy anyway as I have worked on cars all my life with every stinky lubricant made on me and in my hair and eyes. I have turned brake cleaner and carb cleaner the wrong way and shot it full force into my eyes a few times even been sprayed in the mouth once, It wont kill you but you'll be looking out the other eye for a water hose. Been there many times, and know all too well;) Is'nt It amazing how fast you can find the nearest water source no matter what obsticles may be in the way, even though you can't see a darn thing or even open Your eyes for that matter. Brake and carb cleaner could mess You up If you did'nt flush quickly enough though. Anytime I've taken a shot of those I found the water very quickly.:) Greg

WD 40 bad. And lighter fluid dries the shaft out too much.

Two words you may want to hear: paste wax. Try it. It works.

Doesn't it make the shaft gummy in humid conditions?

What about using teflon on shafts????

cleaning

WD-40 & lighter fluid are both petrolium products. I woundn't use either. Cue wax seems to get sticky. I clean with magic eraser useing as little water as possible then quickly dry & burnish with paper towels. If the water pernetrates the wood a little it will evaporate. Petrolium products are going to stay in the wood. After a long period they will soak all the way through.
