Wandering through the newspaper today, somewhat edited:

The Internet is driven by commentary. The defining requirement of a modern website is that there must be nothing on screen that wayward readers cannot leave their mark upon. Spend the day dragging your knuckles around until you're in the right mindset, then come back and leave a comment.

Why is it that comments on so many parts of the Internet lead to worthwhile discussion, while, on other pages, comments provide anthropologists with heretofore unheard of access to life amongst the baboons?

The poorly adjusted have been haunting the Internet since the day someone connected two computers with a string and a pair of cans. They're called trolls: people who go fishing for reaction by saying inflammatory things, or by another definition, people who best belong under bridges. Trolls will be with us always.

Nobody recognizes anyone, and everyone's wandering everywhere, trying to avoid eye contact. Instead of additions to conversation commentors leave a one-off remarks, or, at best, a one-off retort to someone else's one-off remark. The net effect is static.

It's a curious phenomenon: The less mainstream an online discussion is, the more civil it seems. Discussion seldom flies without some kind of community to jell it together, a kind of shared purpose to keep the parts in place.

thank you

Your not even close to being on my hit list...I enjoy most of your posts. I never wanted this thread to turn out like this. For me it's a very small percentage of the members that have big mouths hiding behind a monitor...maybe 1%. If you don't mind spending a little time and money you can find just about anyone. I use to love walking up to one of them and saying, "Could you repeat what you said on the phone or on the Internet now?" 50% almost s*** themselves, 45% stuttered a lot, and 5%...well thats what guns are for. Johnnyt

Johnny,

I have been known to talk behind people's backs, however never anything that I won't say to their face. A local businessman who cheated me out of a few dollars on a transaction made that discovery when he came up to me in a crowd and called me on talking behind his back. I acknowledged that I had talked behind his back but I hadn't told people . . . . By the time I spent five minutes telling him all of the things I hadn't told people about him including cheating his friends and overcharging his own son he was hunting a rock to crawl under!

I am the same Hu everywhere I go, on the net and in real life. What you see here is what you get everywhere. That has been quite a shock to a few folks over the years who figured that what they typed on the net had no meaning in real life.

Hu

Hysterical doesn't always mean funny! Panic stricken, frenzied, out of control or very funny. Having read many of your posts I know that you have not appeared panic stricken or frenzied. :D :D

Did you look up the definition of hysterical? Just type "jude" in the search box up in the right-hand corner and save yourself the trouble.

Try it yourself ... all I got was "Sorry - no matches. Please try some different terms." :p
