Weird situation I saw in 8-Ball

I was playing in a tournament last saturday. Waiting for games to finish I was watching one of my friends play a belligerantly drunk fellow. Why someone would get trashed during tourny play is beyond me.

I don't know what happened before the situation, but they were in the process of spotting a ball. The player that had to spot the ball was uncomfortable with doing so because there were other balls surrounding the dot. You could get the ball directly onto the dot, but it would be a challenge. So, they call the tournament director over to spot the ball for them. While doing so, he accidentally nudges a ball and the player with the shot says that the rack is disturbed so he wants a re-rack. I figured you could just roll the ball back to where it was and no harm no foul. Well, this guy was looking for a free ride (the drunk guy). Everyone was arguing and the drunk guy was arguing with the director over the rules. (also the owner of the sports bar)

It got pretty heated and the drunk guy was calling him all sorts of obsceneties, that I won't repeat here. They didn't rerack the balls. But, should the owner have kicked the guy out of the tournament under the circumstances. Could he have?? He was disruptive and clearly unable to control his tongue, or his actions.

It was under BCA rules with Cue ball fouls only.

FWIW, I beat that drunk guy out of the tournament, lol.

Regardless of any rules, the owner of the bar can do whatever the heck he wants to do. It's his bar.

I suppose the tourney director could have made a call about unsportsmanlike conduct, but that can be subjective.

to me it seems like we should look at the situation as if he were sober.
either way i think they should just move the balls and keep the rack. he was just being a poor (probable) loser.

Even if he were sober, that just seemed like poor sportsmanship. Is that even a rule? To rerack if the balls are disturbed, while no cue ball is in the vicinity. Especially seeing that it's the tourney director/owner of bar.

He actually ended up winning that match. Then I beat him, lol. It was pretty bad...5-1. He's lucky I gave him that one.

the tournament director should have thrown him out of the tournament for his tantrum. every now and again i see adults that need to be reminded that they're adults and should act like one

I agree. We were all in shock and awe, watching them go back and forth. I was very surprised that he didn't give him the boot. The director was PISSED.

the tournament director has the right & should have give him a warning if the drunk guy did not listen he should have been put out of tournament

I like to get trashed and play because is makes it more challenging. Instead of just beating every body sober, it is more fun to be them drunk! There is an ounce of truth there believe it or not. So, you beat the drunk guy, as I quoted in your post, only feeds your small ego. Come play me or KM back in his drinking days (you dont want any im sure).

Now to the real agenda, TD and bar owner should make the correct call. If the guy isn't playing by the rules, then kick him out. Spot the balls correctly.

He should have been kicked out of the tournament and the bar just for being drunk and disorderly, whether or not he broke any rules.

pj <- not real fond of loud drunks

If the tournament director was spotting the ball and nudged the other balls, the tournament director should replace the other balls. If the drunk guy is not okay with that, too bad. If the drunk guy gets belligerent and abusive over it, the tournament director should warn him about his unsportsmanlike conduct, and if the guy continues to be abusive, he can and should be disqualified from the tournament, and perhaps kicked out of the bar.

I had one just the opposite this weekend. The TD in our tournament turned into a total jerk.

Matches were being called for our round where open tables were available, and our match was called. I pick up the paperwork, and my team go to the table. We are waiting for our opponents, while the TD finishes calling out the rest of the matches/available tables. A few minutes go by, where all the other teams called on the surrounding tables show up, but our opponents are not there yet. I give it about another 5 minutes, still no opponents.

I walk up to the TD stand, and ask him to call our match again as our opponents are not there yet. He says I am still calling those matches. Give them a chance to get there. (He had been done with the available matches for 5 minutes) I stated they should have been there by now, and they must not have heard the match called, and to please call it again. He gets really terse and says you need to give them more time and then just blew me off.

I was so pissed, but I walked back to my table. He never did call the match again, but one of the opposing team members happened to walk by the table a few minutes later and so I caught him and let him know. He said, like I figured, they had not heard the match called. He got the rest of his team together and we got our match done.

I am still pissed at the TD. It's not like I was asking them to be put on the clock, I was only asking him to recall the match since the opponents obviously did not hear the original announcement.

How do you deal with a TD in these situations. If I get pissed and tell him what I think, he may throw my team out and I am not going to take that chance.

I don't know about any rulings but if a player uses obscenities with me, he gets one warning. The second time he is OUT of the tournament. I've had to do this twice in over twenty years. Once the guy was drunk and once he was just an A hole.

I've played in tournaments with terrible TD's who didn't have a clue what they were doing. And were arrogant about it anyway. One time after the tourney had ended, I asked the TD directly, "Did you ever think about getting into a different line of work that you were more suited for?" He thought I was serious and asked me what type of work. So I told him, "Have you ever considered a Kool Aid stand?" He got it then. ;)

Just out of curiosity, what kind of tournament has teams???
